CSRHC to Host Vance AFB History Workshop for Teachers

The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center is now accepting applications for the “Keep ‘em Flying” Teachers Institute. The purpose of this two-day workshop is to provide area teachers with more information on the history of Vance Air Force Base from its beginnings in WWII to present. The workshop will be held July 13-14, 2016, in conjunction with the Heritage Center’s exciting new exhibit “Keep ‘em Flying: 75th Anniversary of Vance Air Force Base.”

The Teachers Institute will include living history presentations, primary and secondary resources, hands-on history kits and a tour of Vance AFB. The workshop sessions will be led by Heritage Center staff and guest speakers. The second day of the workshop will be spent on an in depth tour of Vance AFB.

The registration fee for the “Keep ‘em Flying” Teachers Institute is $40 per teacher with registration limited to 15 teachers. Applications are available at the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center or may be downloaded from the Heritage Center’s website, www.csrhc.org. The workshop registration deadline is June 24, 2016.

The exhibit, “Keep ‘em Flying: 75th Anniversary of Vance Air Force Base,” will open Memorial Day weekend and will remain on display in the Heritage Center’s J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation Gallery through Veteran’s Day weekend. “Keep ‘em Flying,” is being developed by the staff of the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center and the Oklahoma Historical Society.

The creation of the “Keep ‘em Flying,” exhibit is sponsored by the generous support of: Jerry Blankenship, Mike Cooper, April Danahy, Leonard Northcutt, David S. Russell, M.D., The Oklahoma Humanities Council, Mary Evelyn Adams, Ray Davis, Cheri Franklin, The Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce and Dick and Lavonn McKnight, in honor of Col. J.J. and Kelly Menozzi.

The mission of the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center is to tell the extraordinary story of the settlement and development of the Cherokee Strip and sharing the lessons of leadership with future generations. The Heritage Center is open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
