Tonkawa's Saturday In The Park

Saturday in the Park May 9

-
Saturday in the Park offers an afternoon and evening of fun for the entire family May 9 in Tonkawa’s Centennial Park, located at Grand Avenue and Sixth Street.
-
Presented by the Tonkawa Arts and Humanities Council, the event features food, art and music beginning at 1 p.m. and ending with a concert by the popular River Bend Boys band of Ponca City, playing a wide variety of danceable tunes from 6 to 8 p.m. Patrons are welcome to dance on the Heart in the Park Labyrinth.
-
“This is a great opportunity for the Tonkawa Arts and Humanities Council to give back to the community by providing a fun day of art and music,” said Mike Ball, TAHC president and co-emcee with Sam Peart for the afternoon. “Please come out and support our local artists, young and old.”
-
Saturday in the Park will be held weather permitting, Ball added, and in case of doubt about weather conditions, persons should call 580.823.0127.
-
Activities planned include a Painted Board Scavenger Hunt conducted by the Tonkawa High School Art Department, Art by Request painted by airbrush artist Jeremy Combrink of the Tonkawa Tribe, and an unmanned Photo Booth where patrons can take their own souvenir photographs. Tonkawa High School visual arts students will assist children in crafting a Mother’s Day gift.
-
Fire trucks, a police bicycle and classic cars will be displayed. Tonkawa Police Deputy Chief Mike Garcia and other Tonkawa Police Department members will be on hand to distribute information about community safety, including bicycle safety, D.A.R.E. material and public safety. They will distribute coloring books for children.
-
Food vendors will open at 12 noon. The Tonkawa Cheerleaders will sell snow cones and the TAHC will sell ice cream, water and soda at their respective booths. Hot dogs and popcorn will be available. Friends of the Library will offer nachos during the afternoon and will serve baked potatoes, Frito chili pie and drink from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Old Santa Fe Depot directly across the street from the park.
-
The Tonkawa Elementary School Honor Choir, directed by Holly Peart, will begin the music events at 1 p.m., followed by the Tonkawa Mid-High and High School choirs, directed by Suzanne Sumpter, from 2 to 3 p.m.
-
Mid-High and High School individuals presenting solos and duets will include Dani Bailey, Emily Gonzalez, Raegan Mach, Kristi Phelps and Leslie Phelps. The Mid-High Trio of Leslie Phelps, Dani Bailey and Dawson Richter, and the High School Girls’ Quartet of Gonzalez, Mach, Hannah Skidgel and Haley Parrish will be featured.
-
Donations will be accepted for the Tonkawa Arts and Humanities Scholarship Fund.
-
Performing throughout the afternoon will be Northern Oklahoma College music faculty Brandon Haynes, Enid singer-songwriter and recording artist Tania Warnock, and area entertainers Sam and Holly Peart, Mike Ball and Maddie Denton. Ball and the Pearts are popular entertainers at TS Fork Restaurant, and Denton, daughter of Chef Jeff Denton, has also appeared at TS Fork.
-
A picnic pavilion and benches are available in the park; however, area residents are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy Saturday in the Park.
