Citizens Police Academy Taking Applications

ENID, OK - Enid Police Department is accepting applications for our next Citizens Police Academy, slated to begin in March.

The goal of the Citizens Police Academy is to educate Enid residents about the structure and activities of their police department. The Citizens Police Academy class is not a training class, but is an exciting informational class with a behind- the-scenes look at the Enid Police Department.

“We are pleased to begin offering this course again,” Capt. Warren Wilson said. “This is a great opportunity for members of our community to gain insight and knowledge into what is required of our officers and how their police department operates.”

Another goal of the academy is to open channels of communication between the citizens of Enid and their Police Department. Additionally, we want to develop an understanding of the police role in the community.

“The objective of the Academy is not to make police officers out of the graduates, but to make them better informed citizens, with an accurate knowledge of our many responsibilities and functions,” Wilson said.

The Citizens Police Academy is taught by police officers, detectives and other personnel in their own areas of expertise. Attendees will have an opportunity to experience the real police department with some of the training hands-on.

Weekly 2 ½ hour sessions cover a range of topics including patrol, criminal investigations, traffic stops, crime scenes, narcotics, DUI enforcement, officer use of force, officer safety, crime prevention and defensive tactics.

The Citizens Police Academy will visit the police shooting range and participants will have the ability to have a ride-along with an officer. Citizens will have the opportunity to shoot a variety of firearms used by police and the SWAT Team.

Additionally, participants will be able to meet and talk with many of the officers as well as the command staff and training staff that serves them.
The Citizens Police Academy is a free 13-week program meeting from 6 to 8:30 p.m. once a week on Tuesdays.

Those interested in being accepted must complete an application and pass a background check. Because portions of the Citizens Police Academy are hands-on class size is limited.

Applications are available online at https://www.enid.org/.../police/citizens-police-academy-1560 or in the Enid Police Department lobby.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. Feb. 1, 2024.
