The Oklahoma Legislature passed Senate Bill 861 during the 2007 Legislative Session to benefit both consumers and retailers in the state by providing sales tax exempt shopping. This will help businesses by providing a boost in the economy and the consumer by allowing them to save money when shopping for clothing and shoes.

Sales of any article of clothing or footwear designed to be worn on or about the human body and the sales price of the article is less than one hundred dollars ($100) are exempt. This does not apply to the sale of any accessories, special clothing or footwear primarily designed for athletic activity or protective use that is not normally worn except when used for athletic activity or protective use, or to the rental of clothing or footwear.

Be careful not to overspend just because the tax free weekend is going on in your area. The regular sales tax rate in Oklahoma is 4.5%, so that’s how much money you’d be saving – along with your local sales tax, if applicable. By shopping around, and also using coupons, you might find that the items you’re looking for are less expensive either before the tax free weekend or after it takes place.

At 8:30 p.m., the Enid Symphony Orchestra will be performing under the direction of Douglas Newell, Music Director. The theme this year is, “The Night Sousa Came to Town.” The performance is sponsored by Security National Bank of Enid. Additional assist has been provided by Park Avenue Thrift, the Oklahoma Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Parking is available on the north side of the park for only those vehicles with disabled license plates or placards, a member of the Enid Symphony Orchestra, or workers for the Kiwanis rides and concession stand.

To ensure safety of spectators, motorists and event staff, the following roads will be temporarily closed prior to the celebratory event: W. Rupe Avenue at Van Buren (U.S. 81), S. Van Buren Access Road at W. Rupe Avenue, and W. Rupe Avenue at S. Johnson Street.

Following the fireworks, traffic from the Golf Course will be directed west on Rupe Avenue towards Cleveland Street and traffic from Meadowlake Park will be directed west on Rupe Avenue towards S. Johnson Street. Traffic on Van Buren south of W. Moore Avenue will be directed either east onto W. Moore Avenue or south on Van Buren toward Southgate Road. This will result in a temporary closure of Van Buren (U.S. 81) north of W. Moore Avenue.

FIREWORKS WARNING!

Enid has a city wide ban on the possession, sale and use of fireworks within city limits. State Law says fireworks can only be sold in Oklahoma between June 15 and July 6. Class C fireworks, such as firecrackers, bottle rockets and exploding devices are prohibited in city limits, but novelty fireworks, such as party poppers and smoke bombs, are permitted. If you get caught you could be fined up to $500 plus court costs. You can transport them if they stay unopened. You can set off fireworks outside the city limits but it is illegal to set off fireworks on county or public roads or near a standing crop.

Unexpected loud noises may cause some anxiety and distress to people and pets. Please help spread the word so that everyone can all enjoy the fireworks rather than be inconvenienced by them.

There will be a large fireworks show July 3 at Oakwood Country Club and a citywide fireworks show at Meadowlake on July 4. Both fireworks shows will be at around dusk.

Tips to keep your dog calm during fireworks shows

1. Keep An Eye Out
If your dog is outside, watch for neighborhood kids setting off fireworks in the area.

2. Keep Your Dog Inside
Avoid the possibility of escape and keep your dog indoors during July 4th fireworks.

3. Turn Up The TV Or Radio
This will muffle the bangs and booms. Soothing music may calm your pet. Start the sound early.

4. Let Your Dog Hide
If your dog hides under something do not try to pull them out and cause more stress.

5. Cover them With A Blanket
A light blanket, might help comfort and calm the dog down.

6. Give Them A Treat
Give your dog a treat after a loud noise and help them associate the noises with positive things.

7. Keep Windows, Doors, And Curtains Closed
Keeping everything closed will muffle noise.

8. Give Them Exercise
Walk your dog early in the day and get them a little tired and less full of energy.

9. Stay Calm
Stay calm and don't let your pet see you react to the noises or lights.

10. ID Your Pet
Make sure your dog has the correct ID in case he does get out and does get lost.

Flag Day is not a federal holiday but is observed all across the country. The holiday was officially established in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson, and in 1949 Congress declared June 14 a national holiday.

Jaden Baez, class president, will give the welcome. Graduation speakers include Dylan Bixler, salutatory address; Emma Sullivan, senior speaker; and Lawton Avants, valedictory address. The ceremony will then commence with 42 students being honored with valedictorian commendations and diplomas presented to all graduates. Additionally, EHS will celebrate 92 honor graduates that evening. The school will be graduating a total of 509 seniors.

Five students will also be graduating with an associate’s degree from Northern Oklahoma College: Paisley Amsler, Lyla Brown, Addan Herrera, Kenna Kain, and Macee Ylitalo.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, Oklahoma Highway Patrol and local law enforcement across the state urge drivers and passengers to buckle up for the Click It or Ticket seat belt safety campaign. The national high-visibility seat belt enforcement effort, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, runs from Monday, May 11th through Sunday, May 31, 2026.

"Seat belt use should be an automatic habit for drivers and passengers alike," said Lt. Chris Arnall of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. "During the Click It or Ticket campaign, we'll be working with our fellow law enforcement officers across local and state lines to ensure the message gets out to drivers and passengers. Not buckling up could mean a ticket, or worse, risking a life."

In the 2025 Oklahoma Seat Belt Survey, statewide seat belt usage was 85.3% which is significantly below the 2024 national seat belt use rate of 91.2%. Of the Oklahoma counties surveyed, only two counties reported use rates of 90% or higher. Six counties had rates below 80% with the lowest use rate recorded at 72%. The Click It or Ticket mobilization is a reminder that seat belts save lives. Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to enforcing Oklahoma's mandatory seat belt and child restraint laws, writing citations day and night.

Buckle Up the Right Way

Place the shoulder belt across the middle of the chest and away from the neck.
Lay the lap belt across the hips and not the stomach.
NEVER place the seat belt behind the back or under arms.

"We are asking friends and family to remind each other to buckle up in the front and back seats and to consider changing their habits if they don't," said Lt. Arnall. "Seat belts save lives, and everyone — front seat and back, child and adult — needs to remember to buckle up for every trip, every time."

Letter carriers across Oklahoma will once again help fight hunger during the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 9.

Now in its 34th year, the effort encourages residents to leave nonperishable food donations by their mailboxes before their mail carrier arrives. Donations collected along postal routes in central and western Oklahoma will benefit the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and its partner agencies, helping stock shelves for local families in need.

Residents should watch for a plastic donation bag in their mailbox during the week leading up to the drive. Food can be placed in that bag or in any plastic bag and left by the mailbox for pickup on May 9.

Since the food drive began in 1992, more than 14.2 million pounds of food have been collected. Organizers say last year’s drive helped provide more than 750,000 meals. All donations stay local to support communities across the region.

“Hunger affects every community, and addressing it takes community action,” said Kelli Hayward Walsh, manager of OG&E Community Outreach & Engagement. “Stamp Out Hunger is neighbors helping neighbors, and OG&E stands alongside the Regional Food Bank in this impactful effort to help our neighbors.”

Regional Food Bank CEO Stacy Dykstra said the drive continues to make a direct difference for Oklahomans facing hunger.

“The beauty of Stamp Out Hunger is how it unites our communities through a simple act of giving,” Dykstra said. “Donations collected through this drive directly support our neighbors experiencing hunger.”

Organizers welcome all nonperishable food items. Some of the most-needed items include:

peanut butter
canned tuna or chicken
canned fruits
pasta and canned sauce
soup and stew

Healthier items such as whole grain and low-sodium foods are also encouraged.

Those who would rather give financially can text “StampOK” to 53-555. Organizers say every $1 donated helps provide three meals to Oklahomans facing hunger.

The food drive is presented by OG&E and American Fidelity, with additional support from CSAA-AAA Insurance, OU Health, WEOKIE Foundation, Bank of Oklahoma, and The Oklahoman.

Crystal digging season is open! Digging is permitted April 1 through October 15, sunrise to sunset at the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge. No special permit is required. Collectors are permitted to remove up to 10 pounds of crystals plus one large cluster for their personal use per day. Take Hwy 64 west of Jet to the Salt Flats sign (about six miles), turn N on sand road to Salt Plains (about three miles), and one mile east on a paved road to the gate and follow the orange signs to ‘Dig Area'.

The drive from Enid to the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge is at just about an hour from Enid. Wear old shoes and clothes. You might want to pack extra clothes for after digging in case they become covered in salt and dirt.

We usually take Highway 64 through Jet, Oklahoma coming from the east. The road to the Salt Flats has a big sign near it and it is a few miles west of Jet. There are a few other roads that will get you there. Stop in Jet to use the restroom, purchase snacks and something to drink. Be sure to have plenty of water and ice if possible. (There is a small bathroom inside the gate at the Selenite Crystal Digging Area just in case.)

Once you arrive at the Selenite Crystal Digging Area you'll see a road marked by posts. The road will be pretty rough at the beginning. If you have a vehicle that sits very low you might have a little trouble. Drive slow. The gate of the Selenite Crystal Digging Area is located at 66003 Garvin Road, Cherokee OK 73728. You drive about a mile then to the Dig Area.

There will be signs telling what areas to stay away from. It will most likely be windy. Even on a non-windy day there's going to be some wind on the salt flats. Take sunscreen and sunglasses!

There will be a designated dig area. You can only dig in that area. You'll see other older areas that are now blocked off. Don't dig in the areas that say keep out. There are severe penalties for not following the rules.

The road is clearly marked. Just follow the posts. You'll also see other diggers and the most recent area of digging will be very apparent.

You'll see the large salt flats but the actual salt is just a very thin layer. You may also see some water areas. There is basically an aquifer right under the salt flats so you will see water filling your hole if you dig very deep.

You'll find lots of these crystal pieces. You're looking for large pieces that have an hour glass shape in the middle. If you dig carefully and hit the right spot you might find large clumps of crystals together. Clumps are rare but very cool!

INFORMATION ON THE SELENITE CRYSTALS

The salt flats are a unique geological area made up of 11,000-acres that are perfectly flat with a wafer thin salt crust. It is classified as the "largest such saline flat in the central lowlands of North America".

The salt area was formed by repeated flooding by sea water millions of years ago. There are thick layers of salt-saturated sand hidden below the plain. Rains and local ground water travel through the salt-saturated sand and comes to the surface where it evaporates, leaving the crust of salt. Saline solution combines with gypsum to promote selenite crystal growth in that portion of the salt flats.

Because these crystals form in the wet part of the  soil, sand and clay particles are included within the crystal. These particles often form an "hourglass" shape inside the crystal. This hourglass shape cannot be found in selenite crystals in other places of the world; it is only found here at the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge in NW Oklahoma.

Single crystals, penetration twins, and clusters are the typical crystal shapes most frequently encountered on the refuge. Exceptional individual crystals measuring up to 7 inches long have been found, along with complex combinations weighing as much as 38 pounds.

Watch Planes Fly In for Breakfast at Enid Woodring Regional Airport This Saturday

There’s something a little different happening at Enid Woodring Regional Airport this Saturday morning, and it’s one of those events that’s fun whether you’re an aviation enthusiast or just looking for something unique to do around town.

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, pilots from surrounding airports will be flying into Enid for the airport’s monthly Fly-In Breakfast. The public is invited to come out, enjoy breakfast, watch the planes arrive and depart, and spend a little time exploring one of Enid’s most interesting local spots.

The event takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Enid Woodring Regional Airport. Guests can enjoy an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet for $10.99, while kids 12 and under eat for $5.99.

One of the best parts of the morning is simply watching the action on the airfield. Visitors can see aircraft flying in from surrounding communities, landing on the runway, taxiing in, and later taking off again. From time to time, there are also spot landing contests, which add a little extra excitement for those who enjoy seeing pilots show off their precision flying skills.

Even if you’re not a pilot or an airplane buff, the Fly-In Breakfast offers a fun family-friendly outing. It’s a chance to get up close to aircraft, see static displays on the ramp, and experience the atmosphere of a working regional airport. Kids especially tend to love watching the planes come and go, and it makes for a different kind of Saturday morning activity.

While you’re there, you can also stop in and check out the airport terminal and the Barnstormers restaurant, which have become part of the experience for many who attend. The event combines small-town hospitality, good food, and aviation in a way that’s hard to find just anywhere.

The Fly-In Breakfast is typically held on the third Saturday of most months from March through October, although dates are subject to change. Throughout the season, Enid Woodring Regional Airport welcomes pilots flying in for breakfast and fellowship, while giving the public a chance to enjoy the sights and sounds of general aviation up close.

For anyone looking for something a little out of the ordinary this weekend, this is a great excuse to head out to the airport, grab some breakfast, and watch the sky come alive.

Woodring Airport History

Enid Woodring Regional Airport (WDG) is located just 4 miles SE of Enid, OK. It is a full service FBO with all the amenities. The airport now houses Barnstormers restaurant and several rooms of aerospace and military memorabilia.

Enid’s Airport was renamed Enid Woodring Municipal Airport on May 30, 1933 after Lieutenant Irvin A. (Bert) Woodring, born February 1, 1902 in Enid, Oklahoma. Irvin A. Woodring was one of the U.S. Army Air Corps’ “Three Musketeers of Aviation” along with fellow pilots John J. Williams and William Lewers Cornelius. The group performed aerobatics at the National Air Races. J.J. Williams died in practice at Mines Field, Los Angeles on September 11, 1928.

Charles Lindbergh, for whom the three had served as escorts, filled in following Williams death. Two weeks later, W. L. Cornelius died when his plane collided with another plane. On January 20, 1933, Bert Woodring fell 2,000 feet to his death over Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, when his Consolidated P-30 fighter exploded in mid-air.

Within the airport grounds is the former traveling VietNam Memorial Wall, Woodring Wall of Honor and Veterans Park, which honors Oklahoma veterans. Ceremonies are held annually on Memorial Day to honor fallen soldiers. A two-story veterans museum at the site is in the works.

Additional items to be sold include coffee table books, cookbooks, puzzles, books on tape and DVDs.

Several popular authors are represented in the selection, and most books are in good to great condition. All Hardbacks will be $2.00 and paperbacks will be $1.00. Proceeds help Circle of Love continue to care for patients without a Medicare or insurance hospice benefit at no charge.

“We are looking forward to the event. It is always fun to see customers find a favorite author or the next book in a series that they have been looking for. It is also nice to see kids get excited about picking out books. Reading is so important for us during all of life stages,” Nelson added.

Studies show that regular reading significantly improves brain connectivity, reduces stress and even enhances empathy towards others. Early reading habits for children are linked to increased brain power and better mental health.

Hospice Circle of Love has been holding their book sale fundraisers for 38 years. The organization serves terminally ill patients in their home or nursing home. A team of caregivers provides pain and symptom management, personal care and guidance to help the patient have a higher quality of life at the end of life. They are the only not-for-profit hospice in the area and are Five Star Rated through Medicare’s Family Caregiver Survey.

The tradition of pinching on St. Patty's day was popularized by Irish immigrants coming to the United States, who believed that wearing green made you invisible to leprechauns, fairy creatures who would pinch anyone they could see. Pinching those who didn't wear green was meant to remind them that leprechauns could sneak up at any time.

If you catch one of the leprechaun fairies, it is said that they must lead you to their treasure and may also grant you three wishes. Party goers tend to dress up as leprechauns on St Patrick’s Day because of the creatures’ iconic status and eye-catching appearance.

St Patrick’s Day was originally a religious feast day for St Patrick – the patron saint of Ireland and a Christian missionary. St Patrick was the son of a deacon and the grandson of a priest. He was actually not born Irish but is believed to have grown up in Roman Britain.

St Patrick’s Day has grown into a global celebration of Irish culture, with festivities (usually, involving a fair bit of drinking green beer) held throughout the world.

Traditional Irish dishes includes foods like corned beef and cabbage, shepherd's pie and Irish soda bread. That is the reason those foods are cooked on St. Patty's Day.

Nominations must include the name, biography, and a photo of the individual that is being nominated. Additionally, the name, phone number, and mailing address of the individual submitting the nomination should also be included.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission announces the following celebratory events slated for Monday, January 19 at the Stride Bank Center Arena, located at 301 S. Independence Avenue:

• MLK Prayer Breakfast: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
• MLK Celebration Lunch and Program: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
• MLK Commemorative March: 1:30 p.m. (begins at the Stride Bank Center Arena)

Local student poster, poetry, and essay winners will be awarded at the celebration program.

Board Chairman Lanita Norwood said, “The entire community is invited to the event to help us honor and pay tribute to Dr. King’s contribution to our society.”
