ENID, OK - The Geminid meteor shower, one of the best celestial events of the year, will reach its peak activity on December 13, dazzling observers with up to 120 meteors per hour.
The Geminid meteor shower is an annual meteor shower that peaks around December 13-14. Unlike other meteor showers, whose parent bodies are comets, the Geminids originate from an asteroid—3200 Phaethon.
The Geminid meteor shower can produce up to 120-150 meteors per hour at its peak, from a dark, unpolluted sky. However, this year, the nearly full moon will obscure the view, reducing the hourly rate.
The Geminid meteor shower reaches its peak on December 13, 2024, with its highest point being at approximately 2:00 a.m. and remain visible until about 5:00 a.m. December 14, 2024.
Tips for Watching a Meteor Shower:
• Once the shower has risen, meteors will appear anywhere across the night sky.
• Be patient, as meteors don't streak across the sky every second. Keep looking, you will see one.
• Due to the full moon, try to avoid looking at or facing the bright moon.
• The later in the evening you watch, the more meteors you'll see.
