Sara Faye Ellis

March 5, 1941 - March 19, 2025

Sara Hughes Ellis, 84, formally of Waukomis, passed away peacefully at the Hennessey Nursing Home. Memorial Service will be held at the Waukomis Christian Church on April 12, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. Pastor David Jones will officiate.

Sara was born to Clifton and Lois Armstrong Hughes on March 15, 1941, in Oklahoma City, OK. She graduated from Midwest City High School. After graduation, she attended Oklahoma State University. While attending OSU, she was out with friends one evening standing in line for the movies when she was introduced to our dad and the rest is history.

A J and Sara were married in Oklahoma City on January 24, 1964. A J worked for Atwoods in Enid and so after the ceremony, the rest of the family went to eat steaks while A J and Sara packed up their car and headed for Enid to start their new life. They stopped at Sonic for their dinner. Every year on their anniversary they would celebrate by going to Sonic and getting a burger and fries. This continued until A J passed away in 2018.

Mom decided to go back to school and get her degree. While living in Elk City due to A J being transferred through Atwoods, she attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University. When A J got transferred back to Enid Atwoods, mom transferred to OSU. She graduated in 1979 with a 4.0. Mom worked full time jobs and raised two kids while going to school.

She worked for the Wheatheart Nutrition Program is Waukomis and Enid Senior Citizen Center in Enid. She went to work for Greenbriar Nursing Home as the activities director and moved up to Dietary Manager before retiring in 2000.

Sara was active in her church. She belonged to the Christian Women’s fellowship for over 35 years. She helped with Kids Café and also sang in the choir.

Sara and A J moved to Fairmont to be closer to family due to A J’s failing health. She continued to live there after A J died. She was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and knowing that she was not going to get any better, she decided that it was time for her to go to the nursing home in April 2024.

Sara is survived by Holle (Chris) Poindexter of Fairmont, OK and Jay (Stacy) Ellis of Hennessey, OK. She is survived by her two grandchildren that were the light of her life. Zoe and LaMunyon and fiancé Xander Petty and Aaron Poindexter. Also surviving is her cousin Donna Miller of Chico, Texas, sister Margaret Worrell and husband Harold of Altus, OK, nieces Gail Dickerson of Enid and Resa Motsch of Center Point, Texas, Tina Hilbert of Oklahoma City, nephews Mitch Worrell of Altus, OK and Mike Worrell if Fredericksburg, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her husband, A J, parents, step father Herman Colston, and other family members.

Thank you to the staff of Hennessey Nursing Home and Rehab, Dr. Charles Ferrell, and all the staff at Valir Hospice for the care that was given to mom.
