Phyllis Ann was born on January 28, 1964, in Beaver, Oklahoma, to John Kenneth “Ken” and Linda Martin. She was welcomed home by her older sister, Sheryl, and spent her childhood growing up in Forgan, Oklahoma, where she attended school from kindergarten through her senior year of high school.
Phyllis made many cherished memories throughout her school years and formed friendships that remained an important part of her life. She was a junior high cheerleader. She played volleyball in early adulthood, often relying on her sister Sheryl to French braid her hair for games. Her friends included Misty, Bryanna, Julie, Scotty, Teri, Gayla, Betsy, Benny, Sally, and many others who shared in the memories of those years.
Faith was also an important part of Phyllis’s early life. She attended church camps at Camp Gibson and Falls Creek and made a personal decision for Christ before being baptized at First Baptist Church in her hometown of Forgan.
Phyllis had a special place in her heart for family, especially her nieces and nephews, whom she loved to spoil. She was maid of honor in her sister, Sheryl’s wedding and enjoyed many family holiday dinners while Lindsey enjoyed the cousin experience of playing with Lynn and Marcus. In her teens, she was blessed to meet her half-brother, John, and in more recent years, her half-sister, Cyndy, with whose family she maintained a connection.
Phyllis began her working life in her teens, taking an after-school job in the kitchen at Beaver County Hospital and Nursing Home. After graduating, she continued working there full-time for several years. She also attended Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas during that time where she pursued a degree in law enforcement.
Along the way, Phyllis spent a short time working at JCPenney, where she especially enjoyed the Christmas season in the gift-wrapping department. She delighted in using the ribbon shredder to create the big, curly bows that made packages extra special—and she certainly appreciated the employee discount, too! Although retail was not her true calling, those memories remained a fun part of her story.
After a brief time living in Spearman, Texas, Phyllis returned to her calling in law enforcement. Her career took her to Hominy, Oklahoma, where she worked as a Correctional Security Officer at the Dick Connors Correctional Center where she was a corporal.
It was in Hominy that Phyllis experienced the greatest joy of her life: the birth of her daughter, Lindsey Renae Martin, on October 24, 2001. From that day forward, Lindsey was Phyllis’s world and her greatest priority. She devoted herself to making sure Lindsey had everything she needed and treasured the time they spent together. Phyllis and Lindsey shared many adventures with Ken and Linda, making wonderful memories on family trips, as well as enjoying countless excursions and special moments of their own.
Phyllis later secured a position as a Case Manager with the Beaver County Department of Corrections, allowing her to return home and be closer to family. When the facility closed in 2017, she moved to Enid, Oklahoma, where she continued her career as a Case Manager at Enid Community Correctional Center. Through dedication and years of service to the State of Oklahoma, Phyllis devoted 27½ years to her career in corrections before her recent retirement.
Throughout her life, Phyllis valued her family, cherished the memories she made along the way, and took pride in the work she did. Above all, her love for her daughter, Lindsey, remained at the center of her world.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents, her brother-in-law, Dennis, and numerous other relatives.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Lindsey, of the home; her sister, Sheryl Hall; her nieces and nephews; her cousins; and other family members who will hold her memory close to their hearts.
Phyllis’s life was marked by devotion to her family, a strong work ethic, and a lifetime of memories with those she loved. She will be remembered by all who knew her and deeply missed by those whose lives she touched.
