Mary Martin

The graveside services celebrating the life of Mary Lou Martin, 87, of Enid, will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday September 5, 2017 in Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Pat Sutherlin and Reverend Diane Stein officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

She was born September 6, 1929 in Apache, Oklahoma to Carl Louis and Jessie Arvella Warner Smith, and passed from this life August 30, 2017 in Enid, Oklahoma.

She attended twelve years of school in Apache, graduating from high school in 1947. She then attended Cameron Junior College in Lawton, Oklahoma where she met Rex R. Martin. They were married on August 28, 1948. She and her husband attended college at Central State College in Edmond, Oklahoma, both graduating in 1950.

They moved to Grandfield, Oklahoma where Rex started his coaching career. They moved to Duncan, Oklahoma in 1954 and then to Enid, Oklahoma in 1959.

Mary taught English, Home Economics, and Foods, at Enid High School and retired in 1988 after 24 years of service. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Phillips University in 1970.

She leaves three children; Michael R. Martin (Jan Becker), Enid, Cynthia L. Skaggs (Mark), Owasso, and Deborah L. Shorter, (AJ), Enid.

She had five grandchildren; Katy Martin, Donnie Rex Martin, Melissa Martin, Joe Widmar, and Art Widmar. She also had seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, both parents, and nine brothers and sisters.

She was a member of Central Christian Church and the Sooner Sunday School class.

She enjoyed quilting, cooking, football, and above all, reading.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
