María del Refugio Castellanos de Lopez

It is with great sadness the family of Maria del Refugio “Cuca” Castellanos de Lopez of Acatic, Jalisco, Mexico, report that she passed quietly in her sleep on August 11, 2019 after a brief illness.

Cuca was born March 22, 1941 to Jose Castellanos (de Loza) and Julia Becerra (Guzman) de Castellanos, in the beautiful pastoral lands of Acatic. Born into a farming family, the eldest of 14 children, she grew up tending the land, cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry. She was loving guidance for her younger siblings who report she was like a second mother to them. Named after Mary, our Lady of Refuge who signifies tenderness and motherly love, for which Cuca was known to embody. She loved the beauty of nature and took joy in nurturing her garden and in handiwork.

She married Juan Lopez and of their union she bore 15 children; Jose Juan (Maria Elena) of Taylor, Texas, Alfredo (Ofelia), Herminia (Martin Garcia), Eduvijes “Vicky”, Alvaro (Nena), Jesus “Chuy” (Erica), Uriel, and Gustavo (Lupita) all of Acatic, Jose “Santos” (Angelica), the late Alejandro (Gwendolyn), Gonzalo (Sylvia) all of Enid, Oklahoma, Mario (Hermila), Ramiro (Edith) of Santa Ana, California, Matilde (Alvaro Hernandez), of Guadalajara, Mexico, and Maria del Refugio “Cuquis”(Oscar Garcia) of Houston.

She leaves behind many family members who love her dearly, siblings: Jose (Ramona), Asencion (Lourdes), Maria Nieves, David, Rafael (Mari) of Acatic; Elias (Carmen), Jesus (Victoriana), Ismael (Alma), Alfonso (Alicia) Maria del Carmen “Carmela” (Manuel Ramirez) all of Enid; Altagracia (Jose Luis Orozco) of Santa Ana, California; Gabriel (Diane) of Franklin, Tennessee; and Obdulia (Guillermo Gonzalez) of Prescott Arizona. She has grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and extended family thoughout the US, Mexico, and abroad, who are left to mourn her loss.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a niece, and one son Alejandro, who passed on August 2, 2019. Her family are reassembling to observe her wake after which her earthly body will be put to rest in the cemetary of Acatic, mass of Christian burial is awaiting the family’s arrival.

O Little Therese of the child Jesus, please pick for me a rose from the heavenly gardens and send it to me as a message of love.

O little flower of Jesus, ask God to grant the favors I now place with confidence in your hands…
St. Therese, help me to always believe, as you did, in God’s great love for me, so that I might imitate your “Little Way” each day.
