Graveside services for George Samuel Cameron, age 96, of Tontitown, Arkansas, formerly of Enid, will be 1:00 pm, Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at Memorial Park Cemetery. Reverend Wade Burleson will officiate. The United States Air Force Honor Guard will provide military honors. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home and Crematory.
George was born December 1, 1928, in Benton, Illinois, to Homer and Sylvia (Deason) Cameron, and passed away Saturday, October 12, 2025, in Rogers, Arkansas.
George grew up in Benton, Illinois. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1947, just at the conclusion of World War II. The Air Force took him through basic training as an aircraft mechanic and then transferred him to Vance Airforce Base to work as a Crew Chief in B-25 training missions. He married the love of his life, Winnifred (Winnie) McCullough, on May 10, 1951, in Enid. They were married 70 ½ years prior to her passing in 2021. George and Winnie had two boys while stationed at Vance. Mark was born in 1952, and Michael was born in 1955. From 1965-1969, George, Winnie, and the boys lived in Okinawa during the time he served as crew chief in B-52 training missions. In those days, Crew Chiefs flew missions with the trainees. George logged tens of thousands of flying hours. After his tour of duty ended in the Far East, the Cameron's moved to Fort Eglin in Tamp, Florida. In 1969, George and Winnie and the two boys (now in high school) moved back to Enid, where the Camerons bought their first house on East Cherokee Street. Sadly, they lost their youngest son Mike in a plane crash when he was only 21. George had retired in 1969, but he took a civilian contractor job at Vance, and he worked as a mechanic and maintenance supervisor until 1991 when he retired for a second time. He and Winnie purchased a luxury motor home, and they traveled the United States until 2011 when their health began to fail.
George is survived by his son Mark and wife Jo, of Tontitown, Arkansas, four grandchildren, Danna Young and husband Britt, Amy Woods, Brent Cameron and wife Kristin, Christy Hedges and husband Jared, eight great-grandchildren, niece, Karen (Jones) Smith, and husband Scott, and a host of other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Winnie, and a son, George Michael Cameron.
