Oklahoma Flu Update

ENID, OK - The 2016-2017 influenza season started on October 2, 2016. Below are the summaries of influenza information obtained from the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) Acute Disease Service (ADS) influenza surveillance system which includes outpatient influenza-like illness sentinel surveillance, influenza-associated hospitalizations and deaths, and OSDH Public Health Laboratory (PHL) testing data.

We are hearing of many kids in Enid being diagnosed with the flu. We do not have Enid only statistics but we do have some stats for the state of Oklahoma.

The number of new hospitalizations and/or deaths reported with testing between December 14 - December 20, 2016 was 5. This brought the cumulative hospitalizations and\or deaths since September 1, 2016 to 54.

Sentinel Surveillance summary for  December 11 through December 17, 2016 said the percentage of outpatient visits statewide meeting the criteria for ILI* was 5.1% (237/4,653).

3.8% of the (27/720) rapid influenza tests performed by sentinel sites were positive. Twenty-two (81%) of the twenty-seven specimens were positive for influenza A, and five (19%) specimens were positive for influenza B.
17.6% (55/312) of the RSV tests performed by sentinel laboratories were positive.

* Influenza-like illness is defined as having a fever (>100°F) combined with a cough and/or a sore throat.
