A Celebration of Life Service for Curtis L. Horrall, 92, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 12, 2022, noon reception, at the Central Christian Church with The Rev. Don Johnson officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Army, along with the Sigma Chi White Rose Ceremony. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home with private family burial at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Curtis Lee Horrall was born at his family’s farm on Lahoma Road, Enid, on a scorching summer day, August 4, 1930, to Bert and Lorene (Davis) Horrall. He passed from this life, surrounded by his family on the afternoon of August 9, 2022.
Early on, his life was marred by tragedy with the loss of his father to leukemia when he was 9 years of age. He was lovingly raised by his mother and two older sisters, June Frances and Betty Jeanne. Curt grew up working about the farm, milking cows, harvesting wheat and when done with chores, experienced boyhood freedom roaming about Turkey Creek, hunting and swimming.
He attended Glenwood school, Emerson Junior High and Enid High School, class of 1948.
A tall gangly fellow, he left farm life to study history at OSU for two years, pledging Sigma Chi fraternity, making many lifelong friends. Curt joined the Army serving in the 325th Hospital Training Unit with several other Enid boys under the guidance of Dr George T. Ross. He was stationed as a medic at the Presidio in San Francisco during the Korean War.
Upon his return from army duty following an honorable discharge, he studied in Edmond at Central State and went on to law school, graduating from Oklahoma City University.
As he was working on his JD, he was employed at First National Bank in Oklahoma City where he met his wife Thelma Van Buren Peterson. They married at First Christian Church in Oklahoma City on June 28, 1958. The family moved along with Thelma’s daughter, Susan, to Enid and Curt furthered his career, founding the trust department at Central National Bank where he worked until 1977. He served on the CNB board of directors for many years.
Two more daughters joined the family in the 60’s, Mary Beth and Patricia Ann.
Curt assumed ownership of the Bank of Drummond in 1977 and together with Thelma, provided rural banking and insurance services until his retirement in 1995.
He was an early supporter of the YMCA, Enid Symphony, and the Gaslight Theater. He was also involved in many civic organizations including Lion’s Club. Curt greatly enjoyed his Rotary friendships later in life. He was a lifelong member of Central Christian Church and worked on the finance committee; many a roast beef dinner followed Sunday services. He enjoyed golf at Oakwood Country Club as well as family fun at the pool, Friday munchies and a good brandy ice. Curt and Thelma could often be found in their favorite booth. Burgers at Flamingo and Wee Too breakfast gatherings with friends and the occasional grandson were special days indeed.
Curt was recognized for his 50 year membership as a Life Loyal Sig, and served in various roles with the Enid Alumni Chapter. He was a 60 year member of the Oklahoma Bankers Association and Oklahoma Bar Association.
Curt was a gracious man of his generation giving leadership to the business and religious communities of his beloved Garfield County. He lived a life of duty and responsibility for his family and community.
He is survived by his sister B.Jeanne Horrall Luther, three daughters, Susan Peterson Massey (George Massey) of Oklahoma City, Mary Horrall (Greg Miller), of Portland, Oregon and Patricia Horrall (Andre Wiley), of Silver Spring, Maryland. Grandsons include Dr. Brenton Massey (Emma Schuering Massey), Kansas City, Missouri, and Robert Miller, Portland, Oregon. Curt also has one great grandson George Daniel Massey, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister June and treasured wife, Thelma.
A sincere note of gratitude is given to his caregivers at the Commons and most recently Brookdale and Elara Hospice for the attentive care and a peaceful ending to a long and productive life. Additional thanks given to Tary and Don Johnson for their loving support.
