Backyard Bugs Invade Leonardo’s

(Enid, OK)—A nine foot praying mantis that uses infrared technology and can detect you as you walk by is coming to Leonardo’s Children’s Museum on April 5th along with other six-legged friends in “Backyard Bugs: An Oklahoma Insect Adventure.” The praying mantis isn’t the only creature that reacts to guests but also a huge monarch butterfly and a larger than life honeycomb play area.

Leonardo’s is part of the Oklahoma Museum Network and this new exhibit is replacing the popular “Backyard Builders.” This latest exhibit should prove to be as exciting. Bugs are so important to our life from pollinating flowers and crops to providing food for thousands of critters. There are many hands on parts of the new exhibit such as build a bug station to DIY firefly flash patterns.

“We think this imaginative exhibit will be a wonderful fit for Leonardo’s! It combines hands on learning with lots of fun,” says Executive Director Tracy Bittle, “Being a partner in the OK Museum Network allows Leonardo’s to have a new, high quality exhibit every six months. “

The larger than life insects are meant to give guests the opportunity to see life from a bug’s perspective. In addition to the animatronics, real live insects will be included to see like Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, arachnids, darkling beetles and hornworms.

Backyard Bugs is included with museum admission and it will remain in Enid through the end of September 2018. What a perfect exhibit for our active summer season! Come see it soon.
