Wheat Capital Running Co., a new 1,700 square foot specialty running supply store, is one of Enid’s newest businesses run by a not so new resident. Glenn McDaniel grew up in Enid, moved away and like many of us, found his way back.

When Glenn moved back to Enid, he brought his love of running from the mountains of Colorado. Over the last three years, the running community has grown quite a bit and the number of races has increased to about 12 a year. Glenn felt it was time for the local running community to have their own store. A place they can go for shoes, clothes, nutrition, hydration, training tips and more.

That is when Wheat Capitol Running Co. went from just an idea to a real brick and mortar store. Wheat Capital is a place that helps people find their way in a sometimes confusing health and fitness industry. They want people to understand why they need a certain shoe, or why they need more protein at certain times, or carbohydrates at other times.

The store carries a wide variety of running and walking shoes that can be worn for all occasions. Included in the mix is a wide selection of children’s shoes as well. Along with shoes you’ll find clothing, nutritional products and great advice.

All of the employees at Wheat Capital are there to encourage everyone along that journey to whatever fitness level they desire. Their products aren’t just for runners either. The same shoes can be used for walking and casual wear. With group runs, and events, they are in Enid to help motivate and educate the public.

Store manager, Glenn McDaniel, has his running certifications and he is the middle school cross country coach for Enid. He also coaches several individual athletes and leads the training programs for the Enid Running Community. Through his certifications, Glenn has focused on the natural motion of the running cycle and will help each customer determine the shoe that will work for their particular strengths, foot type and foot strike.

Glenn and Philip West of Tulsa, his business partner, recently accepted a grant for Wheat Capital Running Co. Five businesses submitted grant applications for the three $5,000 downtown grants. The award winners for 2012, selected by a committee of ERDA members, are Wheat Capital Running Co. LLC, 4RKids Foundation and Soapweeds & Cactus.

The requirements for the grant were:

  • Does the business bring people to the downtown area?
  • Will it increase sales tax revenues to the city?
  • Will it keep people downtown after 5 p.m.?
  • Is the business unique, and does it contribute to creating a vibrant downtown space?

Wheat Capital had the right stuff in all four areas. The start-up business opened May 21 under the direction of McDaniel. The store is open late on Thursday nights so there is no excuses for not dropping by to check out the shoes, clothes and helpful information.
