ENID, OK - Technical Services announced they will be testing and programming all the school zone beacons throughout the city this week, to prepare for the upcoming school year, including Chisholm Public Schools, Pioneer-Pleasant Vale Schools, Enid Public Schools and all other school beacons
within Enid city limits. Dates are Wednesday, August 5 to Thursday, August 6.

Beacon schedules will be programmed according to the current school district calendars, which are available online.

During testing, motorists are reminded to always obey all traffic laws and all posted speed limits in all school zones, even during testing, and to drive with extreme caution.

For questions, please contact the Technical Services Department at 580-616-7336.

Enid school zones are 20 mph during specified times and when lights are flashing.

School zones will have flashing lights. If you speed in a school zone you'll pay a fine. Officials will turn off the school beacons during the lunch period for most Enid Public Schools. According to schools officials, students no longer leave campuses during the lunch hour and all playgrounds are fenced and supervised during breaks. Officials have determined the use of the beacons is no longer needed during this time of day.

Drivers need to slow down and pay attention when kids are present – especially before and after school.

During the school year, motorists must share the road with children who are getting on and off the bus, riding their bikes to and from school and children who are walking.

A few precautions can go a long way toward keeping children safe:
• Don't block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic.
• In a school zone when flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection.
• Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign.
• Take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks and in all residential areas.
• Don't honk or rev your engine to scare a pedestrian, even if you have the right of way.
• Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians.
• Always use extreme caution to avoid striking pedestrians wherever they may be, no matter who has the right of way.

Some schools have specific drop-off procedures for the school year. Make sure you know them for the safety of all kids.

The following apply to all school zones:
• Don't double park. It blocks visibility for other children and vehicles.
• Don't load or unload children across the street from the school.
• Carpool to reduce the number of vehicles at the school.

If you're driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if you were driving behind a car. It will give you more time to stop once the bus’s lights start flashing. It is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.

• Never pass a bus from behind – or from either direction if you're on an undivided road – if it is stopped to load or unload children.
• If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended ALL traffic must stop.
• The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children. Stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus.
• Be alert. Children often are unpredictable and they tend to ignore hazards and take risks.

As a reminder, speeding in a school zone is a $215.00 fine and overtaking a stopped school bus is a $565.00 fine.

There’s something a little different happening at Enid Woodring Regional Airport this Saturday morning, and it’s one of those events that’s fun whether you’re an aviation enthusiast or just looking for something unique to do around town.

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, pilots from surrounding airports will be flying into Enid for the airport’s monthly Fly-In Breakfast. The public is invited to come out, enjoy breakfast, watch the planes arrive and depart, and spend a little time exploring one of Enid’s most interesting local spots.

The event takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Enid Woodring Regional Airport. Guests can enjoy an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet for $10.99, while kids 12 and under eat for $5.99.

One of the best parts of the morning is simply watching the action on the airfield. Visitors can see aircraft flying in from surrounding communities, landing on the runway, taxiing in, and later taking off again. From time to time, there are also spot landing contests, which add a little extra excitement for those who enjoy seeing pilots show off their precision flying skills.

Even if you’re not a pilot or an airplane buff, the Fly-In Breakfast offers a fun family-friendly outing. It’s a chance to get up close to aircraft, see static displays on the ramp, and experience the atmosphere of a working regional airport. Kids especially tend to love watching the planes come and go, and it makes for a different kind of Saturday morning activity.

While you’re there, you can also stop in and check out the airport terminal and the Barnstormers restaurant, which have become part of the experience for many who attend. The event combines small-town hospitality, good food, and aviation in a way that’s hard to find just anywhere.

The Fly-In Breakfast is typically held on the third Saturday of most months from March through October, although dates are subject to change. Throughout the season, Enid Woodring Regional Airport welcomes pilots flying in for breakfast and fellowship, while giving the public a chance to enjoy the sights and sounds of general aviation up close.

For anyone looking for something a little out of the ordinary this weekend, this is a great excuse to head out to the airport, grab some breakfast, and watch the sky come alive.

Woodring Airport History

Enid Woodring Regional Airport (WDG) is located just 4 miles SE of Enid, OK. It is a full service FBO with all the amenities. The airport now houses Barnstormers restaurant and several rooms of aerospace and military memorabilia.

Enid’s Airport was renamed Enid Woodring Municipal Airport on May 30, 1933 after Lieutenant Irvin A. (Bert) Woodring, born February 1, 1902 in Enid, Oklahoma. Irvin A. Woodring was one of the U.S. Army Air Corps’ “Three Musketeers of Aviation” along with fellow pilots John J. Williams and William Lewers Cornelius. The group performed aerobatics at the National Air Races. J.J. Williams died in practice at Mines Field, Los Angeles on September 11, 1928.

Charles Lindbergh, for whom the three had served as escorts, filled in following Williams death. Two weeks later, W. L. Cornelius died when his plane collided with another plane. On January 20, 1933, Bert Woodring fell 2,000 feet to his death over Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, when his Consolidated P-30 fighter exploded in mid-air.

Within the airport grounds is the former traveling VietNam Memorial Wall, Woodring Wall of Honor and Veterans Park, which honors Oklahoma veterans. Ceremonies are held annually on Memorial Day to honor fallen soldiers. A two-story veterans museum at the site is in the works.
The post Woodring Fly-In & Breakfast April 18 first appeared on Enid Buzz.

ENID, OK - Trick-or-Treating in Enid is traditionally on Halloween night no matter what day of the week it falls on. The prime trick-or-treating times are typically 6-8pm. Homes with lights on will have usually have candy, homes that are dark most likely will not. This year Halloween is on Friday, October 31.

Enid Buzz wants everyone to be safe on Halloween night while trick-or-treating. Here are a few of the usual safety reminders for those going out. Have fun and be safe!

1. Drive slow!

If you are driving around town or following your kids, please drive slow and stay off the mobile device. There will be kids darting around everywhere!
-

2. Carry a light or flashlight

Have each child carry or wear something lit, such as a flashlight, glow bracelet or necklace, or flashing attire for visibility. Light-up shoes are also practical, and ever-so-noticeable on a dark Halloween night.
-

3. Have a meeting place

In case someone gets lost or separated, have a meeting time and spot so your not searching for kids all night. Have your kids carry a phone or walkie talkie.
-

4. Wear comfortable easy to walk in shoes

Have kids wear well-fitting shoes; preferably sneakers. Avoid princess high-heel, too-large boots, or other types of shoes often shown with costumes.
-

5. Dress warm

By the time Halloween arrives the temperatures could easily drop 10-20 degrees. Carry a jacket or coat in case the kids get cold. Gloves are great as well. Also carry tissues if the noses start running.
-

6. Wear safe and removable costumes

Avoid costumes that drag on the ground. While cute initially, costumes that drag can trip up little feet, get caught on bushes, and create a tussle that sometimes results in the child wanting to remove the costume. Also pick costumes that are bathroom-friendly as well. Be aware that you may need a bathroom break during the evening.
-

7. Don't cover the eyes

Be sure a child's mask allows full visibility and breathing. Parents should try on masks for size and not hesitate to cut out larger openings for a trick or treater's comfort. If possible, find a mask that "breathes" and is easy to put on and off. The types of mask that easily can slide up on the head and then pulled down are best.
-

8. Avoid carrying dangerous objects

Only carry flexible props, such as knives, swords, ninja items, etc., that can't cause injury if a kid accidentally falls. Also remember that your child may get tired of carrying the props.
-

9. Look for houses with lights on

Lit homes are safer and you know the person is welcoming you to trick-or-treat. Residents who do not wish to be bothered by trick-or-treaters often leave off their lights as a sign.
-

10. Remind your kids

Remind your kids not to go into houses or get in cars with strangers. Explain to them not to take more than one piece of candy if a bowl is left out and be sure to tell them to say THANK YOU!
-

11. Don't stay out too late

Keep track of time and don't trick or treat after 9 p.m. (general recommendation). That allows ample time for children to trick or treat, and by then, the excitement of the evening and the candy/treats means little ghouls will be tired, anyhow.
-

12. Carry some water

The kids will eventually get thirsty, especially if they eat some candy.
-

13. Check the kids candy before they eat a piece

It doesn't hurt to inspect candy and throw out opened wrappers and homemade goodies from people you do not know. Also look for candy your child might be allergic to or get sick on.
-

14. Cross at crosswalks

Walk on the sidewalk and cross at crosswalks rather than running through the street.
-

15. Remember

Always remember the houses that give out king-size candy bars and visit them next year!!
-

Have fun!

ENID, OK - I was a child of the 70s. You know, the good old days. That was before computers, video games and hundreds of TV channels. Summers were the best because our parents worked and we got to spend hours exploring the far reaches of our neighborhood and beyond.

Bikes and skateboards were our only modes of transportation and we used them to get around everywhere. Almost every street had sidewalks that ended at a curb. These were our thoroughfares and by the end of summer we'd have every bump and crack memorized.

There seemed to be less crime or at least it wasn't on TV 24/7 so we didn't know about it. Most people didn't lock their doors and kids were allowed to go just about anywhere alone. I think it was the freedom we had that makes such good memories of those summers.

The July 4th holiday was always the highlight of the summer. Fireworks were pretty much unrestricted so we always had lots of explosives in July. Below are the memories I have of the July 4th holiday and the things we would do during that fun summer weekend. I may add more to the list from time to time as new memories pop into my head. Enjoy!

Listen to The 70's Buzz Podcast about growing up in the 70s.

Richard Dermer Memorial Flying Field behind Autry Technology Center, located at 1201 W Willow. Flying field accessible only from N. Van Buren. Turn west on Mulberry and proceed to field. Parking is on the grass east of the flying field.

History

Kites Over Enid was held in 2009 and 2010 in a large field behind Autry Technology Center. Both events were held as attempts to break the Guinness Book of World Records for number of kites in the air at one time. In 2009, Enid broke the North American record with 2,598 kites in the air at once, but fell short of setting the world record. The 2010 Kites Over Enid event again came up short with “only” 2,439 kites in the air. The 2,598 kites flown in 2009 remains the North American record.

The idea to bring back Kites Over Enid came from the 2015 AKA National Convention with city and AKA leaders saying a kite festival in Enid each year would help advance the joy and values of kiting. Phillip Whitaker, Enid native and AKA President, was the Field Coordinator for the 2015 convention and leads the efforts for Kites Over Enid.

In years past all of the competing marching bands would parade around the Enid downtown square in what was known as the Million Dollar Parade. Bands from all over the country would converge on Enid for this yearly event.

In the heyday of Tri-State kids would sleep in churches and homes because there was never enough room to house them all. Band buses could be seen on every corner of town. The carnival rides were located on W. Broadway between the post office and court house.

ENID, OK - Enid Public Schools will welcome its newest students beginning next week during four-year-old enrollment for the 2024-25 school year.

Families must enroll students online at www.enidpublicschools.org/enrollment. Enrollment will open on April 1 and will be completed exclusively online. Guardians enrolling their children as EPS students for the first time will need the children’s immunization record, birth certificate (no hospital footprints, please) and verification of address, such as a utility bill.

Enrollment is first come, first served. Randy Rader, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education, expressed the crucial need for guardians to enroll their students as soon as possible.

“We are thrilled every year to welcome our newest, youngest learners to EPS,” said Rader. “We pride ourselves in meeting the needs of all families but are also conscientious of our staffing needs. We encourage all families to enroll as soon as they can so we can place students and continue to serve families by having sites staffed adequately.”

Families who do not have access to a device to complete enrollment online are encouraged to visit the EPS Welcome Center at 500 S. Independence between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. beginning April 1. Resources and assistance will be available.

All EPS four-year-old programs focus on the social, academic, physical and emotional needs of children. Students must be four-years-old on or before September 1, 2024.

Beginning May 6, full-day kindergarten enrollment for students who are new to EPS will be open to families online. Parents should enroll their student online at www.enidpublicschools.org/enrollment or visit the Welcome Center located in the Administrative Services Center, 500 S. Independence. Online enrollment will be open May 6.

Students must be five-years-old on or before Sept. 1, 2024 to enroll. If a child is currently an EPS pre-kindergarten student, it is not necessary to attend kindergarten enrollment because their school will send out pre-enrollment for kindergarten via call, text or email.

Collectors are permitted to remove up to 10 pounds of crystals plus one large cluster for their personal use per day. Take Hwy 64 west of Jet to Salt Flats sign (about six miles), turn N on sand road to the salt flats (about three miles), and one mile east on a paved road to the gate and follow the orange signs to ‘Dig Area'.

The Story Of Digging Crystals As A Kid

There are some memories that can immediately bring a smile to my face when I think about them. Some of those memories are the day trips we made as kids to the Great Salt Plains area. We'd go over there hunting for selenite crystal formations. I remember the drives over from Enid with my family, thinking it took hours to get there and then wondering if we could really find the road that would get us there safely. Of course it really never took that long to make the 40 miles or so and the road to the plains was always clearly marked with a big sign.

As a kid it was quite a site driving up to the salt flats in the middle of Oklahoma. It was a huge flat desert that was completely covered in white. It boggled my mind how it ever got here. As you would get closer you would start to see the dig holes, or areas where visitors had been searching for their own crystal treasures. Here are some photos of the Salt Flats from a past trip.

A kid legend around Enid always told of unforeseen quicksand that diggers could accidentally walk or drive into. This meant there was always an air of danger as we would drive onto the actual plains. We never did find any quicksand or see anyone disappear in case you're wondering.

We would find what we thought was a lucky spot, park and unload. We always had a trunk full of things to dig with and plastic containers used to wash off the crystals and carry them home. I remember it being windy and sometimes almost cool with the air blowing in from the lake. Even in the beating spring and summer sun, there was no match for the Oklahoma wind.

We'd spend hours digging our own holes looking for those legendary crystal formations. You could always find the single crystals with the familiar hour glass design locked inside but to find a cluster of more than four or five was like finding a four leaf clover in a clover field. I think we ran across a few small clusters from time to time but never hit the mother load of the thousand piece cluster we fantasized about on the drive over.

Most of our crystal digs were family outings on a Saturday or Sunday. A quicker than imagined drive to Jet with mom, grandma and my sister would get us there and we'd spend the day baking in the sun. I remember coming home dirty and salty with cuts under my finger nails from scraping the sand and salt bare handed. We always seemed to have a garage full of crystals and would unload them at our garage sales just in time to go collect more.

There were other fun times at the Great Slat Plains. I remember my best friend and I getting interested in lightweight rocket powered cars. They actually looked like rockets with foam wheels. His parents would drive us over to the plains and we'd shoot the cars off with this rocket powered fuel that would freeze your finger off if it touched your skin. Our rocket cars would blast across the salt plains further than we could ever get them to go within the Enid city limits.

Those were all great memories, even after whining and complaining about having to go in the first place, sitting in the car and getting a big dose of Oklahoma wind. There was usually a stop in Jet for a snack or drink at the convenience store on the way home and every now and then I was allowed to snag a turtle that we'd spot crossing the dirt road.

If you haven't been or it's been a while, grab the kids and head over to the salt flats. Because it can be hot, windy and dry you should take care to protect your skin! Take sunscreen and some type of hat to cover your head. And don't forget to take a camera to record your first big crystal formation score!!

Digging for selenite crystals is dirty work so wear some old clothes you won't mind getting stained or ruined. Also take sunglasses and Chapstick. And probably the most important item to include is water!!! Make sure everyone has something to drink all day.

When you go digging remember that the moist growing crystal formations will be in soggy sand and are fragile. If you're not slow and careful you'll most likely break any large formations that you find. Let the crystals air-dry for several days and it will decrease their fragility once you get them home.

INFORMATION ON THE SELENITE CRYSTALS

The salt plains are a unique geological area made up of 11,000-acres that are perfectly flat with a wafer thin salt crust. It is classified as the "largest such saline flat in the central lowlands of North America".

The salt area was formed by repeated flooding by sea water millions of years ago. There are thick layers of salt-saturated sand hidden below the plain. Rains and local ground water travel through the salt-saturated sand and comes to the surface where it evaporates, leaving the crust of salt. Saline solution combines with gypsum to promote selenite crystal growth in that portion of the salt flats.

Because these crystals form in the wet part of the soil, sand and clay particles are included within the crystal. These particles often form an "hourglass" shape inside the crystal. This hourglass shape cannot be found in selenite crystals in other places of the world; it is only found here in NW Oklahoma.

Single crystals, penetration twins, and clusters are the typical crystal shapes most frequently encountered on the refuge. Exceptional individual crystals measuring up to 7 inches long have been found, along with complex combinations weighing as much as 38 pounds.
