ENID, OK - The Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce invites residents and visitors to celebrate one of Enid’s most treasured traditions during the 2026 Cherokee Strip Celebration, taking place Friday, September 18, Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20 in downtown Enid.

Enid’s history. Enid’s tradition. Enid’s celebration.

The annual Cherokee Strip Celebration recognizes Enid’s history and the events surrounding its founding during the 1893 Land Run, while celebrating the vibrant community we have become today. The celebration brings together families, businesses, nonprofit organizations, community groups, and visitors from many different cultures and backgrounds. It is an opportunity to honor our history, celebrate the progress made throughout the years, and recognize the people from all walks of life who have come together to make Enid the community it is today. Most importantly, the Cherokee Strip Celebration is about coming together as a community, celebrating what connects us, and looking toward a shared future.

FRIDAY KICKS OFF THE CELEBRATION

The celebration begins Friday, September 18, with the traditional Lunch on the Lawn from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the courthouse lawn.

Authentic Indian tacos and a drink will be available for $12, while supplies last. The traditional Indian Taco Lunch was originally started by the Enid Intertribal Club and continues today through the families who carry on its tradition.

SATURDAY FESTIVITIES

Saturday’s festivities will take place throughout downtown Enid, with vendors on the courthouse lawn from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There is still room for additional vendors. Vendor applications are available at www.enidchamber.com and are subject to approval. Deadline to apply to be a vendor is September 10.

The highlight of Saturday’s celebration will be the Cherokee Strip Parade, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

For the first time, the parade will award $500 for first place, $300 for second place, and $200 for third place for the best overall entries, bringing businesses, organizations, and community groups together for a truly community-wide celebration.

The parade will feature local businesses, nonprofit organizations, community groups, floats, marching units, first responders, and other special entries. Leading this year’s parade will be the legendary Slash-O-Ranch Longhorns, continuing a Western tradition that has become a signature part of the Cherokee Strip Celebration.

To help maintain a smooth and continuous parade flow, all performances must take place while the entry remains in motion. Entries may not stop to perform.

PARADE ROUTE AND ROAD CLOSURES

The parade will begin at the corner of Grand and Maine, travel north on Grand, west on Randolph, then south on Independence, and end at the corner of Independence and Maine.

The parade staging area will be south of Grand Avenue to Park Street.

For public safety and parade operations, the perimeter surrounding the parade route will be blocked to vehicle traffic beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, September 19.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and use alternate routes when possible.

IMPORTANT LONGHORN SAFETY NOTICE

Before the parade, the public is asked to use extreme caution as the Slash-O-Ranch Longhorns will be driven from the Garfield County Fairgrounds down Grand Avenue to the parade staging area.

The Longhorns will be escorted by the Enid Police Department and the cowboys from Slash-O-Ranch.

For the safety of the Longhorns, their handlers, law enforcement, and the public, motorists and spectators are asked to give the Longhorns plenty of room and follow all instructions from law enforcement and parade officials.

DO NOT DRIVE AROUND OR ATTEMPT TO GO AROUND POLICE ESCORTS, BARRICADES, OR TRAFFIC CONTROL POINTS.

The Chamber strongly encourages motorists who do not need to travel along Grand Avenue during the Longhorn movement to take another route if possible.

The cooperation of the public is essential to keeping this unique tradition safe for everyone.

PARADE REGISTRATION AND PRIZES

All parade entries must pre-register. The entry fee is $10. Deadline is September 10.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three parade entries:
1st Place — $500
2nd Place — $300
3rd Place — $200

Businesses, nonprofit organizations, community groups, and other organizations are encouraged to participate and help make this year’s parade a memorable celebration for the entire community.

Parade registration information and vendor applications are available at www.enidchamber.com.

A COMMUNITY TRADITION

The Cherokee Strip Celebration is about more than remembering Enid’s history. It is an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the people, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and families who continue to make Enid a great place to live, work, and visit.

“We are excited to bring the community together for another great Cherokee Strip Celebration,” said Lori Coonrod, Director of Operations for the Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce. “This year is especially exciting as we bring our commercial and nonprofit parade entries together and welcome the legendary Slash-O- Ranch Longhorns back to lead the parade. We have had a longstanding partnership with Cowboy First Bank to make their appearance possible. We encourage everyone to come downtown, enjoy the festivities, support our local businesses and vendors, and be part of this special Enid tradition.”

Parking is available on the north side of the park for only those vehicles with disabled license plates or placards, a member of the Enid Symphony Orchestra, or workers for the Kiwanis rides and concession stand.

To ensure safety of spectators, motorists and event staff, the following roads will be temporarily closed prior to the celebratory event: W. Rupe Avenue at Van Buren (U.S. 81), S. Van Buren Access Road at W. Rupe Avenue, and W. Rupe Avenue at S. Johnson Street.

Following the fireworks, traffic from the Golf Course will be directed west on Rupe Avenue towards Cleveland Street and traffic from Meadowlake Park will be directed west on Rupe Avenue towards S. Johnson Street. Traffic on Van Buren south of W. Moore Avenue will be directed either east onto W. Moore Avenue or south on Van Buren toward Southgate Road. This will result in a temporary closure of Van Buren (U.S. 81) north of W. Moore Avenue.

FIREWORKS WARNING!

Enid has a city wide ban on the possession, sale and use of fireworks within city limits. State Law says fireworks can only be sold in Oklahoma between June 15 and July 6. Class C fireworks, such as firecrackers, bottle rockets and exploding devices are prohibited in city limits, but novelty fireworks, such as party poppers and smoke bombs, are permitted. If you get caught you could be fined up to $500 plus court costs. You can transport them if they stay unopened. You can set off fireworks outside the city limits but it is illegal to set off fireworks on county or public roads or near a standing crop.

Watch Planes Fly In for Breakfast at Enid Woodring Regional Airport This Saturday

There’s something a little different happening at Enid Woodring Regional Airport this Saturday morning, and it’s one of those events that’s fun whether you’re an aviation enthusiast or just looking for something unique to do around town.

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, pilots from surrounding airports will be flying into Enid for the airport’s monthly Fly-In Breakfast. The public is invited to come out, enjoy breakfast, watch the planes arrive and depart, and spend a little time exploring one of Enid’s most interesting local spots.

The event takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Enid Woodring Regional Airport. Guests can enjoy an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet for $10.99, while kids 12 and under eat for $5.99.

One of the best parts of the morning is simply watching the action on the airfield. Visitors can see aircraft flying in from surrounding communities, landing on the runway, taxiing in, and later taking off again. From time to time, there are also spot landing contests, which add a little extra excitement for those who enjoy seeing pilots show off their precision flying skills.

Even if you’re not a pilot or an airplane buff, the Fly-In Breakfast offers a fun family-friendly outing. It’s a chance to get up close to aircraft, see static displays on the ramp, and experience the atmosphere of a working regional airport. Kids especially tend to love watching the planes come and go, and it makes for a different kind of Saturday morning activity.

While you’re there, you can also stop in and check out the airport terminal and the Barnstormers restaurant, which have become part of the experience for many who attend. The event combines small-town hospitality, good food, and aviation in a way that’s hard to find just anywhere.

The Fly-In Breakfast is typically held on the third Saturday of most months from March through October, although dates are subject to change. Throughout the season, Enid Woodring Regional Airport welcomes pilots flying in for breakfast and fellowship, while giving the public a chance to enjoy the sights and sounds of general aviation up close.

For anyone looking for something a little out of the ordinary this weekend, this is a great excuse to head out to the airport, grab some breakfast, and watch the sky come alive.

Woodring Airport History

Enid Woodring Regional Airport (WDG) is located just 4 miles SE of Enid, OK. It is a full service FBO with all the amenities. The airport now houses Barnstormers restaurant and several rooms of aerospace and military memorabilia.

Enid’s Airport was renamed Enid Woodring Municipal Airport on May 30, 1933 after Lieutenant Irvin A. (Bert) Woodring, born February 1, 1902 in Enid, Oklahoma. Irvin A. Woodring was one of the U.S. Army Air Corps’ “Three Musketeers of Aviation” along with fellow pilots John J. Williams and William Lewers Cornelius. The group performed aerobatics at the National Air Races. J.J. Williams died in practice at Mines Field, Los Angeles on September 11, 1928.

Charles Lindbergh, for whom the three had served as escorts, filled in following Williams death. Two weeks later, W. L. Cornelius died when his plane collided with another plane. On January 20, 1933, Bert Woodring fell 2,000 feet to his death over Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, when his Consolidated P-30 fighter exploded in mid-air.

Within the airport grounds is the former traveling VietNam Memorial Wall, Woodring Wall of Honor and Veterans Park, which honors Oklahoma veterans. Ceremonies are held annually on Memorial Day to honor fallen soldiers. A two-story veterans museum at the site is in the works.
The post Woodring Fly-In & Breakfast April 18 first appeared on Enid Buzz.

ENID, OK - The 22nd annual A Fling at the Springs music festival will be held Saturday, September 27, 2025, beginning at 2:00 p.m. and running throughout the afternoon and night. It will be at Government Springs Park in Enid, Oklahoma. The family-friendly music festival is free and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and to be prepared for cooler weather when the sun goes down.

"We have full bands all day and we're doing something we've never done before. We have the same headliner this year that we had last year - Kin Faux. They're such a fun, high energy band and everyone loved them so we asked them back," said Tammy Wilson, one of the festival coordinators.

The lineup for this year's festival is: Dually Noted, Van Damage, The Peachtrees, Gus Burns & The Saddle Tramps, Jake Taylor, and Kin Faux.

"This is the 22nd year for the festival and it's done completely from donations and sponsorships so we are truly grateful to the community members that contribute so we can keep doing this every year. Our board is made up of volunteers and we do this because it's important to us to bring attention to live music and hopefully introduce new music to the community," said Michael Dotson, another festival coordinator.

Each year the Fling board awards The David McCoy Memorial Scholarship to a local student for music lessons or to go toward their college tuition if they are a performing arts student. Students interested in applying for scholarship funds can contact Wilson at info@enidevents.com for more information.

A Fling at the Springs was created by Enid musician Sylvan Reynolds in 2003 to raise money to fix the fountains at the Government Springs lake and it evolved into an annual festival. In 2010 Wilson joined Reynolds to help with the planning and he later retired from the project, leaving it to Wilson and Dotson. A Fling at the Springs was then turned into a non-profit organization and the board now consists of Dotson, Wilson, Shawn Mahaffey, Travis Layton, and Larry Lewis. Their mission is to support and encourage live music and the arts in Enid.

See demonstrations by experienced kiters before flying your own kite. You can also bring, create or buy your own colorful kite. Make sure to catch a glimpse of special kites from all over the country. Food trucks will be on site for lunch and snacks. Discover or rekindle the joy of flying a kite at Kites Over Enid.

Richard Dermer Memorial Flying Field behind Autry Technology Center, located at 1201 W Willow. Flying field accessible only from N. Van Buren. Turn west on Mulberry and proceed to field. Parking is on the grass east of the flying field.

History

Kites Over Enid was held in 2009 and 2010 in a large field behind Autry Technology Center. Both events were held as attempts to break the Guinness Book of World Records for number of kites in the air at one time. In 2009, Enid broke the North American record with 2,598 kites in the air at once, but fell short of setting the world record. The 2010 Kites Over Enid event again came up short with “only” 2,439 kites in the air. The 2,598 kites flown in 2009 remains the North American record.

The idea to bring back Kites Over Enid came from the 2015 AKA National Convention with city and AKA leaders saying a kite festival in Enid each year would help advance the joy and values of kiting. Phillip Whitaker, Enid native and AKA President, was the Field Coordinator for the 2015 convention and leads the efforts for Kites Over Enid.

They are planning to add a 100 seat church/school house, general store and bank. If you have several hours to spare, they offer tours at no charge.

The most popular theory about Valentine's Day origin is that Emperor Claudius II didn't want Roman men to marry during wartime. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret weddings. For this, Valentine was jailed and executed. While in jail he wrote a note to the jailor's daughter signing it "from your Valentine".

In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day card.

23
Based on retail statistics, about 3 per cent of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their pets.

22
About 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year. This makes it the second largest seasonal card sending time of the year.

21
If you’re single don’t despair. You can celebrate Singles Awareness Day (SAD) instead.

20
Meant as an alternative to Valentine’s Day, the holiday is for single people to celebrate or to commiserate in their single status.

19
Or you could pop over to Finland where Valentine’s Day is called Ystävänpäivä, which translates into “Friend’s day”. It's more about remembering your buddies than your loved ones.

18
Many believe the X symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn't write their names signed in front of a witness with an X. The X was then kissed to show their sincerity.

17
Girls of medieval times ate bizarre foods on St. Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future spouse.

16
In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve."

15
In 1537, England's King Henry VII officially declared Feb. 14 the holiday of St. Valentine's Day.

14
Physicians of the 1800s commonly advised their patients to eat chocolate to calm their pining for lost love.

13
Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine's Day in the late 1800s.

12
More than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine's Day.

11
73 percent of people who buy flowers for Valentine's Day are men, while only 27 percent are women.

10
15 percent of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day.

9
Over $1 billion worth of chocolate is purchased for Valentine's Day in the U.S.

8
Over 50 percent of all Valentine's Day cards are purchased in the six days prior to the holiday, making Valentine's Day a procrastinator's delight.

7
The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love.

6
Red roses are considered the flower of love because the color red stands for strong romantic feelings.

5
189 million stems of roses are sold in the U.S. on Valentine's Day.

4
Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines day gifts

3
Teachers will receive the most Valentine's Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets.

2
220,000 is the average number of wedding proposals on Valentine's Day each year.

1
