Recognizing & Preventing A Stroke

ENID, Okla. - Every 40 seconds someone in the U.S. has a stroke. Nearly 2 million brain cells die each minute a stroke goes untreated. Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S.

A stroke, sometimes called a brain attack, occurs when a blockage stops the flow of blood to the brain or when a blood vessel in or around the brain bursts. Strokes can and do occur in people of all ages with nearly a quarter of all strokes occurring in people younger than age 65.

There are ways to decrease your chance of having a stroke. Stop smoking, cigarette smoking contributes to one in every five strokes in the U.S. Other ways of lowering your stroke chances include controlling blood pressure, managing cholesterol, exercising regularly, eating a low sodium diet, maintaining a healthy weight, preventing diabetes and limiting alcohol intake.

Help spread the word to help prevent stroke. As many as 80 percent of strokes are preventable! Learn the signs of a stroke shown in the graphic on this page. Learn to look for an uneven or drooping face, an arm that drifts down or is weak and speech that sounds difficult or strange. If someone you know has these symptoms, call 911 immediately.
