Steven John Hughes, passed away on the evening of Thanksgiving, November 23, 2023, after a brief battle with lymphoma. Steve was born on April 9, 1954, in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Verlin J. Hughes and Evelyn Kathleen (Stinson) Hughes. Steve grew up on the family farm northwest of Buffalo, and attended Buffalo schools, where he played football, basketball, ran track, was an FFA State Farmer, and graduated as tri-valedictorian of his senior class. Steve graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a B.S. in Pharmacy. While in college, he worked at the Kash n' Karry convenience store in Weatherford, which ignited his desire to work in retail.

While consulting at a nursing home as a pharmacy intern in Chickasha, Oklahoma, Steve met Donna Jean Davis. Steve and Donna were married 13 days after their 1st date. Donna had a daughter from a previous marriage, Jennifer Lynn Dobry. Steve was never able to adopt Jennifer, but he always considered her to be his daughter. Jennifer is married to Adam Fowler, and they live in Henderson Nevada. Steve and Donna had a son, Steven John Hughes II, who resides in Fort Smith Arkansas.

On February 1, 2002, Steven and Donna were blessed with the adoption of Ashley, Roger, and Matthew Hughes. Roger Hughes and Marisa Vertz live in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Roger has two daughters, Elisandra Lynn Hughes and Diana Quinn Hughes. Aaron Matthew Hughes and his wife Elizabeth Hughes of Kingman, Kansas, have three children, Aveah Dorian, Oceanus Dorian, and Holden Hughes. Ashley Renee Hughes has three sons, Mason Nance, Carter Nance, and Aiden Hughes. Steve received guardianship of Mason Alexander Nance and raised him for 8 years. Steve was close to Mason and felt like Mason was his own son.

Steve is preceded in death by his wife Donna Jean Hughes, his parents Verlin J. Hughes and Evelyn Kathleen Hughes, his grandparents John and Leslie Hughes, and his grandparents George and Orpha Stinson. Steve is survived by his children and grandchildren; by his sister Joyce Hughes Montgomery and Dean Montgomery of Castle, OK and their family; his brother James Richard Hughes and Nancy Hughes of Buffalo, OK and their family; his sister Lisa Peterman and Les Peterman of Weatherford, OK and their family; and his aunt Twila Schonlau, a very special aunt who has always been very close to the family.

Steve was always proud of his work and career. He started as a pharmacy intern working at Chris' Rexall Drug and Hodge's Discount Drug in Chickasha OK. He worked as a pharmacist at Country Pharmacy in Anadarko, OK and TG&Y Pharmacy in Enid, OK. In 1983, Steve received the opportunity to open the Wal-Mart Pharmacy in Enid, where he managed Wal-Mart Pharmacy for 29 years. During this period, Steve became licensed as a Doctor of Pharmacy when the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy granted licensed pharmacists the title of Doctor of Pharmacy. In 2012, Steve resigned from Wal-Mart Pharmacy to pursue his life's dream of opening his own drugstore, Hughes Pharmacy, in Medford OK.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Steven’s name be made to the Medford CIA (Community In Action) toward the purchase of a metal memorial bench with the inscription "Donna and Steve Hughes, owners of Hughes Pharmacy" to be placed on East Cherokee Street. Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home will serve as custodian of the funds.
