He attended Lutheran Parochial Schools, and graduated from Riesel High School in 1945. He entered the US Navy in 1946, and served his country with the 103rd Seabee Battalion on Guam, receiving his Honorable Discharge early in 1948. During his service with the Navy, he was in the telephone communications system on Guam helping to restore telephone service after World War II, which then led to his career with SW Bell Telephone Company, beginning in March 1948 in Texas. In 1949, he transferred to Oklahoma. During his career with the telephone company, he helped with the conversions of manual telephone systems to dial exchanges throughout Oklahoma in the late 50’s and early 60’s. He met Marcella Louise Freeman and they were married on March 5, 1950 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Breckenridge, Oklahoma. This union was blessed with four children; Sharon, Mark, Susan and Kathie.

He was a very active member in the Lutheran Church following his retirement on January 31, 1987. He always wanted to give back a tithe of his time and talents to his Heavenly Father and always had a joy in helping others. He was a firm believer in his faith to his Heavenly Father and the church. His hobby was square dancing and he was an active member of the Levi’s ‘n Lace Club in Enid, and was active on the NW District Board serving as President and other offices. He also enjoyed camping.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Carolyn Roper.
