About Red Carpet Country
-
For tourism and marketing purposes the Oklahoma Department of Tourism divided Oklahoma into six regions or "countries." Northwest Oklahoma was designated Red Carpet Country due to the region's red soil and the fact that the panhandle alludes to a "red carpet" into Oklahoma.
-
The other regions are Green Country, northeast; Choctaw Country, southeast; Chickasaw Country, south central; Great Plains Country, southwest; and Frontier Country, central.
-
Red Carpet Country represents 16 counties in northwest and north central Oklahoma. The counties represented by Red Carpet Country are Cimarron, Texas, Beaver, Harper, Woods, Alfalfa, Grant, Kay, Ellis, Woodward, Major, Garfield, Noble, Dewey, Blaine and Kingfisher counties. The largest cities are Enid, Ponca City, Woodward, Alva and Gyumon.
-
Northwest Oklahoma is home to the Rita Blanca National Grassland, Great Salt Plains Lake and salt flats, Little Sahara State Park, Alabaster Caverns State Park, Black Mesa and the Glass (or Gloss) Mountains.
