ATS Counseling Focus Institute, in partnership with St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, has created a therapeutic group to help mothers deal with postpartum anxiety/postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression is moderate to severe depression in a woman after she has given birth. It may occur soon after delivery or up to a year later.

After finding a need for such a group in Enid and the surrounding areas, ATS Counseling Focus Institute director Rebecca Kroeker decided to offer the group through the counseling agency. “ATS wants to offer the appropriate programs to help those in the community, after finding where the needs are the highest,” Kroeker said. “There are times when a group setting is an ideal way to help deal with these matters and this is what we hope to bring to these women with this particular group.”

Nicole Winfield, outreach program director for ATS, has had personal experiences with postpartum anxiety and is very excited about what the group will offer for the moms. “When I was going through it, I found that finding someone who was going through the same thing was what I needed to help me,” Winfield said. “We would share our struggles and it gave me a sense of normalcy to know that I was not alone, I wasn’t crazy.”

The first meeting for the group will be on Tuesday, October 22nd at 6 p.m. at ATS Counseling Focus Institute, 1625 W. Garriott Suite F. The group will be held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. There is a $10 per session fee. Amy Melvin, LPC, will be the counselor facilitating the group. The women will be encouraged to share their struggles and experiences with motherhood as Melvin educates them with ways on how to deal with these stressors.

St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center has generously partnered with ATS on the group. Their participation helps in providing this program to those interested, as well as offer scholarships to attend the group.
