Mary Ann was born May 4, 1936, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and adopted by Alonzo and Willie Ruth (Allen) Broome, and passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2023, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She grew up in Tulsa and was a member of Eastside Christian Church of Tulsa. She graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1954 and worked for Utica Square National Bank until 1955, then attended Phillips University where she met the love of her life, Gerald Hoeltzel. They were married at Medford, Oklahoma on June 22, 1957. After Gerald served in the Army in Germany from 1957 to 1959, they moved to Freedom, Oklahoma, then to Tyrone, Oklahoma for 8 years. After moving to Covington in late 1968, Mary Ann returned to school at Central State University where she received her Bachelors Degree in elementary education.

She taught school at Garber Schools for five years, then Covington Schools for five years. She went to Watonga and taught there for another thirteen years. While teaching in Watonga, she earned her Master’s Degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. She spent her last four years teaching at Waukomis Public Schools before her retirement. Throughout her years of teaching, Mary Ann instilled a love for reading in her students, just as she did in her children and grandchildren. She was an advocate for her profession and participated in several professional organizations including Oklahoma Reading Council, OEA and NEA and the women educators’ sorority Delta Kappa Gamma where she served as president of the Theta chapter for two years. She set an example that demonstrated her value for education, and she was proud that all three of her children earned their degrees at Oklahoma State University.

Mary Ann was a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in the various communities in which the family lived. She taught Sunday school, weekday bible classes and vacation bible school. When she and Gerald retired in Enid in 1999, they joined St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Mary Ann was in the Lady’s LWML there and also enjoyed a sisterhood in the Cherokee Strip Quilters Guild. She served as a volunteer at Integris Bass Baptist Hospital where she worked in the gift shop for 16 years. She took great joy in her grandchildren and supported them in all their activities. She and Gerald often drove great distances to watch ballgames and attend concerts, graduations and confirmations.

Mary Ann is preceded in death by her parents, Alonzo and Willie Ruth Broome; her husband of 65 years, Gerald Hoeltzel; brother Edward Broome, niece Gayle Broome and nephews Doug Broome and Erin Logan.
