Man arrested following standoff after shooting at officers

ENID, OK - A 40-year-old Enid man was arrested late Thursday on multiple felony complaints following a nearly six-hour standoff after he shot at officers.

Walter Lee Hill Jr. was booked on six counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon upon a police officer, possession of a firearm after former felony conviction, resisting arrest and other outstanding felony warrants following the standoff.

At 3:52 p.m. Thursday March 16, 2023, Enid Police Department officers responded to the 1200 block of East Elm after receiving a report of a man firing a gun into the air.

Officers responded to the area but did not locate the man reported to have fired the shots.

At 4:27 p.m. a second call reporting shots fired in the area of 12th Street and Cypress was received.

Officers and detectives arrived at the scene and were approached by a citizen who said the shots were fired in the residence at 421 N. 12th.

Approaching the residence, officers and detectives were again approached and told by a woman who said she was shot at by Hill inside the residence.

Officers began forming a perimeter and making public address announcements to Hill. Hill then fired shots from inside the residence through a west-facing window toward the officers. Several officers then returned fire.

No one was struck or injured by the gunfire from the residence. Hill was neither struck or injured.

EPD'S SWAT Unit was called to the scene, along with deputies from Garfield County Sheriff's Office and officers from the North Enid Police Department and Waukomis Police Department.
Officers spoke with Hill via phone several times during the standoff but were unable to convince him to surrender. After several hours, gas canisters were deployed inside the residence.

Members of the Payne County Sheriff's Office drove their armored vehicle to the scene to assist and as they arrived, Hill surrendered to officers at 9:42 p.m.

We wish to sincerely thank the Garfield County Sheriff's Office, Payne County Sheriff's Office, North Enid Police Department and Waukomis Police Department for their assistance, which allowed this incident to conclude safely.
