Local Resident Finds Curious Artifact

ENID, OK - Local resident, Allen Peek, stopped by our office with an interesting artifact that he says he found in the Enid area. Peek said he made the unexpected discovery while digging around on a project with a friend.
-
Peek had no idea what the object was but knew it could possibly be valuable or old. The carved stone looks something like a bird, possibly a falcon. Peek researched the shape and said that it might be related to an Indian culture.

The carved object has been shown to Professor Jerry Hawkins at Northern Oklahoma College. Hawkins is not an expert but told Peek it appears to be a bird effigy that could be associated with the Mississippian culture. He is an instructor of history and government.
-
The object appears to be carved out of quartzite and could possibly date back to 750 A.D. according to Hawkins. Peek has done further investigation and feels the image could also be tied to the Egyptian culture due to the fact that is appears to be a falcon.
-
Peek has found other carved objects that he believes might be related to a Native American settlement in the Enid area. He's in search of anyone that might be able to help him research the objects that he has found and possibly put a value on them.
-
Anyone that is or knows of a local archeologist or expert on Oklahoma's Native American culture should contact Peek to help clear up the mystery. He can be contacted at 580-402-3607.
