Leticia Vega, beloved wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, and friend, passed away suddenly January 25, 2022 after an unexpected illness.
She was born to Eva Martinez Gonzalez and Alfredo Medina Becerra in Acatic, Jalisco, Mexico in 1954, one of seven children. She grew up in Acatic, where she will be buried as soon as it is possible.
Eager to travel, she moved to Enid, OK in 1980 and married Rafael Vega at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, where she has been an active parishioner for over forty years. Leticia and Rafael had three children, Alexander, Janet, and Carina—and they are quick to mention friends who refer to Leticia as their “segunda madre” or second mother.
Leticia loved through action, leading with her contagious smile. She cherished her family: her husband, children, their spouses, and her grandchildren. She was known to drop everything when others needed her and from a very young age, she took loving care of her parents, quick to return to Mexico when she was needed.
Always the hostess, Leticia welcomed everyone, whether into her home for her famous rice, birria, tamales, ceviche or even a stay if someone needed a bed. It was not unusual to have house guests for days or weeks. Once Carina entered school, Leticia went to work caring for a larger circle of people and cleaned houses for twenty-two years, making new friends as she grew her client list.
She sewed, crafted, designed jewelry, and she loved shopping for a bargain. Houseplants thrived under her care, and it is suspected she talked to them to encourage vitality. With her family, she did not mince words and was quick to offer guidance and wisdom to help them grow, too.
Family beach trips were annual events and Leticia especially loved the sea. The couple traveled to Europe and enjoyed seeing the world with cherished friends. After retirement, Leticia and Rafael spent more time in Mexico, where Leticia loved to play Mexican bingo and shared the game with her grandchildren when she returned to Oklahoma.
Leticia’s faith impacted everything, from her involvement at St. Francis and her daily Rosaries to her servant heart and compassion for others. God was woven into all aspects of her life and she wove it into her children and those around her.
Leticia was preceded in death by her father in 2004.
She is survived by her husband, children, and grandchildren, as well as her mother, Eva Martinez Gonzalez, and countless family and friends.
The family invites friends to a viewing at Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home on Sunday, January 30, 2022 anytime between 8am and 8pm. The Rosary will be 4pm Sunday at the funeral home and all are welcome. Mass of Christian Burial will be 5pm Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and burial will follow as soon as possible in Acatic, where Leticia will be buried near her family.
There is a memorial to help the family with Leticia’s final trip home and the funeral home is acting as custodian of that fund.
