Kenneth Ledru Slack

The service celebrating and honoring the life of Mr. Kenneth L. Slack, 92- year- old former Enid resident, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 16, 2017. The service will be held at Central Christian Church with a reception immediately following the service. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

He was born October 6, 1925, in Kingfisher to T.C. and Edith Slack. He attended Kingfisher schools, then enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he became a student at Oklahoma A & M University. He moved to Enid and met Peggy Gober who became his wife of 63 years. He completed his education and received a Bachelor’s degree from Phillips University. Kenneth began working at Pope Distributing Company (formerly Enid Distributing Company) and served decades as general manager. He was employed there for 45 years. He was dedicated to community service as a member and President of the following organizations: Enid Noon Ambucs, Enid Rotary Club, Grand National Quail Club, Air Force Association, and the Enid Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Hedges Speech and Hearing Board of Directors, Enid/Garfield County Development Alliance, Inc. Board of Directors, and the Enid Salvation Army Board of Directors. Additionally, he was presented with a Lifetime Membership in the Salvation Army. His passion for our country, our Armed Forces, and especially Vance Air Force Base was widely known. He was selected as one of the original Partners in the Sky at Vance Air Force Base. He traveled to Washington, D.C. to lobby on behalf of securing the Base and later was delighted to travel to our nation’s capital as a member of a military Honor Flight with his son, Jim. He was one of the creators of Camp Tomahawk, a summer camp for elementary students. Kenneth was a member of Central Christian Church serving as a Deacon, an Elder and a member of the Board of Directors. He loved his 60+ years as an active member of the Sooner Sunday School Class. He was an avid golfer, college and professional football enthusiast, longtime poker player, and lover of Big Band music. Above all, his faith and his family were his greatest joys.

He is survived by his son, Jim Slack and his wife Tammy of Tulsa and his daughter, Denise Blume and her husband Steve of Enid. He is also survived by three beloved grandchildren, Parker Slack, Preston Slack and Madeline Slack all of Tulsa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, an infant daughter, his parents, and five siblings.
