James Monroe ”Hoppy” Hopkins, passed away peacefully Monday evening, March 20, 2017, at his residence. Jim was born Feb. 22, 1935, in Shawnee, the son of Martin Luther and Ollie Leora Martin Hopkins. He attend Ponca City schools then served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1958. He married Genice Ann Glover on Oct. 30, 1959, in a small home wedding at Genice’s parents home, They moved to Ponca City and he worked for Rocket Freight Lines then Carbon Black. He retired form Carbon Black with 30 years of service. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his kids. He and Genice loved to go to South Texas after retirement as snowbirds. He then became a crossing guard for Union School for 10 years until his health failed.

He is survived by his wife, Genice, of 57 1/2 years; three children, Jarita Jester (Mark), Paul Hopkins (Amy), Vance Hopkins (Laura); 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, M.L and Jack; his sister, Louise and one granddaughter, Brandy. A service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 25, at Ranch Drive Baptist Church. The Revs. Bob Ryan and Jerry Garber will be officiating. Hoppy was a great husband, father and grandfather. His two loves in life were OU football and Elvis Presley. He will be greatly missed by all.
