Esther Mittelstet, 96, was called to her heavenly home on April 24, 2024 and is now joyfully reuniting with loved ones who have gone before. She died peacefully with family at her side at Integris Health Enid Hospital. Throughout her life, Esther felt blessed with family, friends, and good health.
Esther’s funeral service is Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 1:00pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, officiated by Rev. David Reber, Jr and Rev. Kenneth Wade. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at the garden chapel in Memorial Park Cemetery. Viewing will take place Wednesday-Friday and visitation with family members on Friday from 3:00-4:00pm at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Esther was born to Fred and Lena Meier Schweer October 21,1927, growing up as the youngest of six children amid the farmlands and oil fields near Covington, OK. After graduating from high school and driving harvested wheat to the elevators that summer, Esther moved with her older sisters to Enid where she worked for OG&E. She met the love of her life, Johnie, at St. Paul’s Easter service. Their marriage on August 10,1947 was blessed with 59 years of devotion and the joy of five children. Esther took on a new challenge after raising her children by serving as the secretary for the Education Department at Phillips University for 32 years. Her dedication earned her the “Keeper of Knowledge” Award from the Student Education Association and the respect from those with whom she worked. An active member of St. Paul’s for 77 years, she served in many roles, impacting many children and adults. Her foray into exercise at the Enid YMCA at a later age led to her recognition as YMCA Volunteer of the Year, recipient of the “Spirit, Mind, Body” Award and her lengthy service on the Board of Directors. Esther also enjoyed her work as a part-time realtor. Her hobby of creating family picture albums, 36 to be exact, provided hours of entertainment for her loved ones.
Esther will be remembered as a kind, loving and giving woman whose family was her joy. Her determined spirit, sense of humor and caring for others were evident into her final hours. She exemplifies a Christian who has won the race with grace and resolve reminding us that this sad moment is also one to be celebrated joyfully. We can cherish the wonderful memories of her until we also win the race and see her again one day.
Missing her deeply will be her daughter, Kathy (Francis) Nutting of Golden, CO and sons Randy (Diana) Mittelstet of Arvada, CO and Brian (Cindy) Mittelstet; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Arnold Schweer (105 yrs. old) and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Johnie, infant son Phillip, and son Roger Mittelstet; her parents, three sisters and one brother.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials which may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran School or Enid YMCA with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home acting as custodian of the funds.
