Marquette Students Spend Spring Break In Enid

ENID, OK - Spring Break is normally a time college students relax, take time off and visit exotic destinations. However, there are groups of students that give up that week of freedom and trade it for community service and personal growth. These young individuals embark on an experience that fulfills them personally and builds on their faith.
-
For over 30 years, Marquette University students from Wisconsin have enjoyed choosing service trips during Marquette's Spring Break. The Marquette Action Program (M.A.P.) allows students to spend time living in community, reflecting upon issues of social justice, and making a difference in a community in need.
-
M.A.P. sites are organized within the themes of urban poverty, rural poverty/eco-justice, education, human dignity, and building-rebuilding. Each work site offers Marquette students the chance to live simply and work hand and hand with the community for one week.
-
M.A.P. trips teach students to contribute to the community in which they work, exposes them to different social, cultural and economic situations in our society, and helps them grow in awareness of justice issues.
-
Enid, Oklahoma is a site host for M.A.P and has been for many years. These great groups of college volunteers make the annual trek to Enid and work with the local Habitat chapter to build or improve a home for a local family. The experience may entail beginning work, such as framing, roofing, and siding the house, or later stages, such as painting and building flower beds.
-
Local Habitat organizers have posted online, "You'd think they'd been doing this for years! They are some of the hardest workers we've ever seen! They'd get one task done and immediately be ready for the next! We love their heart for others! It shows in everything they do- truly a phenomenal group of students!"
-
In one day the Marquette volunteers removed door frames, framed closets, installed sheet rock with mudding, tiled and grouted floors, installed vents, replaced outlets, sanded to prep for paint and painted.
-
You can follow the progress of the students as they work on a home in Enid this week. They update the Enid Habitat For Humanity Facebook Page with photos and descriptions of each days accomplishments.
-
