Dorothy Smithson

The funeral service celebrating and honoring the life of Dorothy Smithson, 76, of Enid will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 11, 2018 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Kenneth Wade officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Minco, OK. with Gene Overton Officiating. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

She was born June 10, 1941 to James and Edna Wilson Mitchell in Dalhart, Texas and passed from this life on May 8, 2018 in Enid, Oklahoma.

She was raised and educated in Dalhart, Texas, graduating form Dalhart High School in 1959. She then attended Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. She moved to Amarillo in 1975 and in 1980 she moved to Corpus Christi and raised her children as a home maker. In 1983 she moved to Oklahoma City and began working for Hartford Insurance. She was very effective in disaster relief, working in storm assessment in national disasters. She continued her career moving to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1997. In 2003 she retired and moved to Enid to be near her grandchildren. She loved the beach, gardening, animals and relished in all three of her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, John Smithson and wife Jenny, of Enid; Daughter, Shari Whittier, of Amarillo, Texas; her beloved grandchildren, Christian Serapiglia, Traber Smithson, and Bronte’ Smithson; one sister Helen Benefiel and her husband Tom, of Moore.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Evelyn Dell Hogue.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a memorial donation to your local Animal Shelter or to the Make a Wish Foundation with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
