David J. Nicholas

January 03, 1937 - May 27, 2021

David Joseph Nicholas (84) passed peacefully on May 26, 2021 at his home in Green Mountain Falls, Colorado. David will be remembered for his love of God and prayer, his love for his family, his country and the majestic mountains that God created. David loved nature and all of God’s creatures, his best days were out on the river fly fishing with his family.

David was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas H. Nicholas on January 3, 1937 in Enid, Oklahoma. David attended Enid High School and Oklahoma A&M University. He received his training at Aetna School of Insurance in Hartford, Connecticut. David founded Nicholas & Company and American Standard Life and Accident Insurance Company. Through these two companies, he proudly offered employment and income opportunities to hundreds of people and many more insurance agents across the United States. David loved to start and build businesses and, in his younger years, he loved to remodel and restore historic buildings to their former beauty. He was truly an artist and a builder.

David married his love, Katherine Ann Moxley, on June 14, 1965, in Green Mountain Falls and their love story continued for fifty-six years. They were blessed by their growing family, including: daughter, Dana Nicholas Hunsinger, Chipita Park, Colorado, and children Vanessa and Tony Egan and their children, Aspen and Vienna Egan, Ethan and Gabby Hunsinger and their children Remi and Stetson Hunsinger, Hayes Hunsinger, and their second daughter, Claire Nicholas Thompson and Steve McDonnold of Oklahoma City and their children Nick Thompson and Thayer Thompson, and son, Nathan David Nicholas and his wife Alison of Colorado Springs and their children, Sage Nicholas and Koda Nicholas. David counted his grandchildren and great-grandchildren among his greatest blessings.

David was honored by the Enid Chamber of Commerce in 1988 with their highest honor, Citizen of the Year. He served his church of many years, First Presbyterian Church of Enid, Oklahoma as an Elder. Upon moving to Green Mountain Falls, David found his church home to be First Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs. Fly Fishing was a true ministry to David and the friends and family who were introduced to the sport by him.

He loved the days when he hosted friends of all ages at “the Ranch” in Colorado, skiing with his kids, elk and turkey hunts and the infamous fishing trip to Alaska. He loved the camping trips, “jeeping” and hiking. He made walking sticks for friends frequently. He was a walking encyclopedia of Colorado’s backroads, trout waters and the stories that go with them!

David was an artist that loved to paint, carve, sculpt and build. He left many treasurers with his family.

David was preceded in death by his loving parents, Nicholas H. and Genevieve Nicholas, his sisters, Vivienne Nicholas Barrack, Marguerite Nicholas Rainey, Rosalie Nicholas Brewer and his brother, K. James Nicholas, as well as Dale and Thelma Moxley and Gary R. Moxley. David is survived by his wife and children and grandchildren.
