Cathryn Irene VanHoesen Maly

Cathryn Irene VanHoesen Maly of Enid has passed away. She left this world at St Mary’s Hospital of Enid, she was 73 years old at the time. She was born in Enid, Oklahoma on January 15, 1947 the daughter of Eldon Edward VanHoesen and Irene Maxine Simmering VanHoesen. Cathryn attended primary schools in Covington, Oklahoma. The family moved to Garber when she was in the 6th grade. Cathryn attended Garber Schools graduating from Garber High School in May 1965. A member of the National Honor Society, Cathryn was salutatorian of her class. Unfortunately, she was unable to give her speech due to contracting a bad case of laryngitis. After high school, Cathryn attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma for two years. It was there where she earned her Associate’s Degree graduating in 1967.

She worked as a secretary for OSU while she attended college there but soon moved to Enid. While living in Enid she worked for Wright, Sawyer, Traynor, & Wynn Attorneys at law as an administrator for many years. She served many years at the county office of Garfield County Human Services before moving to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

Cathryn loved the Lord and she loved to sing his praises. She was a devoted member of both the Garber Christian Church and the Davis Park Christian Church of Enid. She sung in the choir at both churches from the time when she was a young girl, to a young mother raising her family. She met and married J. Darrel VanBrunt and from this union came two daughters Beth and Julie. She later met and married Miles Maly and gained a stepdaughter, Crystal and stepson Burr from this union.

Cathryn was a talented solver of crossword puzzles. She loved them as a girl and never outgrew the love of crosswords. She sang in the church choir for many years. She had a beautiful voice and a special bond with her furry friends. Cathryn enjoyed curling up with a good antique book and a cat in her lap for an afternoon of joy. She liked collecting bells or spoons from other states. Her son-in-law Shannon would bring her spoons from his travels in the military. She always displayed them and told the stories every one. She attended all her children’s activities- music, sports, banquets, etc. She also attended those same types of events for her 2 nieces and nephew. She attended many stock shows helping with the animal care.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents Eldon and Irene VanHoesen, husband J. Darrel VanBrunt, and daughter Beth Kitterman.

She leaves behind her husband Miles Maly of the home, daughter Julie Stephens and her husband Shannon of Florida, stepdaughter Crystal Penrod and her husband Travis of Alaska, stepson Burr Maly and his Wife Jaime of Washington, son-in-law Timothy Kitterman, grandsons Tanner Penrod, Cole Maly, Reid Maly, and Camden Maly. Also left behind to cherish her memory is her sister Janet Seidl and her husband Wesley of Garber, Oklahoma, niece Amanda Vegoren and her husband Shane, niece Michelle Honeywell and her husband Rocky, nephew Edward Seidl, and great nephew Kole Honeywell.

Graveside Funeral Services will be held at the Garber Cemetery on Thursday January 14, 2021 at 4 p.m. Dan Lundgren will officiate. Friends are welcome to stop by the Funeral home at 401 Arapaho Street, Garber OK to pay their respects and sign her book on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and again, on Thursday morning before the service starting at 10 am and ending sat 2 p.m.

The Funeral Home would like to make a note that the service time is 4 p.m. that is 16:00 military time. It is a later than usual service this is not a typo.

Masks will be provided as well as hand sanitizer. Please use caution and practice social distancing for the health of our town.
