The graveside Mass of Christian Burial Celebrating and Honoring the life of Betty Malone Tuohy, 94, of Enid will be held 11:00 Wednesday January 25, 2023, in the Enid Cemetery with Father Mark Mason officiating. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

Betty Malone Tuohy was born October 12, 1928, to Don Malone and Ruth Dauner Malone in Enid, Oklahoma and passed from this life January 20, 2023, in Enid, Oklahoma.

She attended Enid Public Schools and graduated from Enid High School in 1946.

From 1936 to 1946, she was an active tap dancer and performed in many local functions, meetings, and conventions. She also studied piano and played at local afternoon tea parties.

In 1946 she attended Oklahoma A.&M. (now known as Oklahoma State University). It was there she met, and fell in love with Michael Tuohy of Long Island, New York. They were married on June 9, 1950 and resided in Enid ever since. They had 68 years of wonderful marriage.

She belonged to the First Methodist Church until 1963, when she then joined St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

As a young woman she was very active in community projects, working for March of Dimes, Red Cross, Community Chest, and Meals on Wheels. She did volunteer work at the Enid Memorial Hospital for seventeen years, holding the position of president many times. During her children’s school years, she was active with Cub Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scouts within the St. Joseph School system. She managed a mobile library at the school and participated in all forms of extra-curricular activities with the children. She played the organ for Sunday services for four years and gave organ lessons to some of the school children.

Betty taught piano and organ lessons to thirty-seven students in her home for over fifteen years. She was active within the Enid Federation of Mother’s Clubs and was a member of the Chi Beta Child Study Club for fifty-one years. She was a practicing artist in watercolors, pen and ink, and acrylics. In her later years, she became a prolific writer of poetry, essays, articles, short stories, and novels. You seldom saw her without notebook and pen. She belonged to the Enid Writer’s Club, the Don Blanding Poetry Society, Poetry Society of Oklahoma, and the Oklahoma Writer’s Federation Inc. Her poem “Waters of the Washita”, (about the massacre of Black Kettle) won first place in the Poetry Society of Oklahoma state convention. It was also published in the Oklahoma Today.

She always said her greatest enjoyment had been the twenty-four trips to Ireland she and her husband Michael made. Together they wandered the hills of Ireland where she gathered information for her five novels.

Betty had great faith in God and turned to Him every day in her prayers.

She is survived by her children Rita Janousek, Colleen Tuohy, Kevin Tuohy and wife, Ursula, Shawn Tuohy and wife, Vickie; grandchildren, Josh Janousek and wife, Jennifer, Kelly Tuohy and fiancée, Shan Reddy, Hannah Lollman and husband, Justin, Darcy Asbill and husband, Christian, and Kegan Tuohy; great grandchildren, Aiden Janousek, Maggie Lollman, and Teddy Lollman.
