Betty Lea (Shipley) Miller, of Enid, Oklahoma, passed away on July 26, 2026, at the age of 99. She was born on May 27, 1927, in Guthrie, Oklahoma, to Maude E. (Clark) Shipley Kelso and Jesse E. Shipley, and was also loved and raised with the guidance of her stepfather, Orville R. “Dutch” Kelso.
Family visitation will be on July 29, 2026, between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. at the Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home in Enid. A funeral service will be held on July 30, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home in Enid, with burial to follow at Enid Cemetery.
Betty was raised in Guthrie and graduated from Guthrie High School. On May 24, 1947, she married Lloyd Delton Miller, and together they began their life in Guthrie before living in Blackwell and Perry, Oklahoma, and eventually making Enid their lifelong home.
Betty worked in restaurants early in life and marriage. After arriving in Enid, she went to work at the Enid State School, where she worked her way up to supervisor. After 14 years there, she went on to St. Mary’s Hospital, where she became the hospital’s first monitor technician and worked for 17 years before retiring.
Betty was deeply devoted to her family and to Enid High School. She worked night shifts so she could attend every football, basketball, and baseball game, home and away, often arriving well before the gates opened. She also traveled with the Enid High Big Blue Band during the years her children were in band. She never missed her children’s games or competitions, and after they graduated, she continued supporting the Plainsmen with the same dedication.
When grandchildren came along, Betty gave them that same steady support, taking them to games and dance competitions and cheering them on with pride. Known first as “Momma Miller” by students and parents alike, she later became lovingly known as “Grandma Miller.” Her love for the Enid Plainsmen was recognized when she twice received the Enid High School Plainsmen Award for most outstanding fan. A bench dedicated to her love of the Plainsmen sits in front of the Plainsmen store on South Grand in Enid today.
Betty and Lloyd were blessed with six children: Shirley Dills; Sarah Rockey and her husband, David; Stan Miller and his wife, Claire Hume; Sheila Iverson and her husband, Mike; Sondra Garrett and her husband, Alferd; and Scott Miller and his wife, AnneMarie.
She is also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Jack “Steven” Strycker and Lindy Hart, and their children; Rochelle Tucker and her husband, Charles and their children, Dustin Etter and his wife, Jennifer and their children; Alison Smith and her husband, Clovis and their children; Shane Etter and his children, one named Betty in honor of her great-grandmother; Heather Rockey; Brandon Rockey and his wife, Lacie; Kristen Tankavich and her husband, Mark; Amy Miller and her husband, Robert Raskin; Jay Miller and his wife, Zoe and their son; Max Miller and his wife, Rachel and their children; Vance Cashwell and his wife, Tayler; April Iverson and Akil Gay and their children; Ashley Williams and her husband, Steve and their children; Nicole Merrick and her husband, Jake and their children; Jennifer Jones and her husband, Philip and their children; Jeschke Garrett and his wife, Felicia and their children; and Shyla Miller.
Her great-grandchildren include Tyler Strycker, Sierra McRae, Ariana Hart, Austin Hart, Britany Dills, Jonathan Dills, Kayeleigh Weber, Natalee Gonzales, Sierra Livingston, Camden Livingston, Roman Miller, Sophie Miller, James Miller, Ayden Iverson, Tylyn Gay, Alexys Iverson, Jay Williams, Emilia Merrick, Adilynn Merrick, Kyden Garrett, Zane Garrett, Breed Jones, and Sammy Jones, and several great-great-Grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lloyd Miller a sister Edith Mae Boulware and grandchildren, Edward Dills, Cassie Garrett, and Aaron Tomlinson and great-grand daughter Lyla Garrett.
Betty’s life was marked by faithfulness, hard work, family devotion, and an unforgettable loyalty to the Enid community she loved. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose presence filled bleachers, ballparks, band trips, and family gatherings with encouragement and love. Betty’s greatest joy was simply being there for the people she loved.
