The services celebrating and honoring the life of Mary Ellen Hartwick, 88, of Enid, will be held 4:00 P.M. Saturday May 9, 2026, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Complete cremation care and services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings, A life celebration home.
Mary was born June 4, 1937, to Harvey Theodore and Rhoda Marion Nunn in McCurtain, Oklahoma and passed from this life April 27, 2026, in Enid, Oklahoma.
She was raised and educated in McCurtain graduating from McCurtain High School with the class of 1955. She married Derl Gene Hartwick the same year. They had three children together, Johnny Wayne Hartwick, Marvin Theodore Hartwick, and Rita Jean Hartwick. After their divorce, She and Rita moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma, where she worked for Muskogee Public Schools for twelve years before retiring in 1989. She moved to Enid in 2003 to be closer to Rita.
She enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading, thrifting, and spending time with her family, including her cats and dogs. She would spend hours either walking or sitting outside with the dogs. A favorite activity was going to the park on Saturday morning, walking the dogs, and feeding the ducks.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, were she brough much joy to everyone. Very rarely did she miss attending church. Faith was a large part of her life, bringing her joy knowing she would return to her parents and be reunited with her son Johnny. Families are forever.
She loved being involved in each community she lived in. She served on library boards in both Muskogee, and Enid. Was active in quilt guilds, where she loved spending time with other members, hand quilting each other’s quilts. Mary loved going to plays at the community theaters. Her favorite books were cookbooks, biographies, and history about World War II.
For her high school senior trip, the class went to Nashville and visited the Grand Ole Opry. She spoke about this experience many times. Some of her favorite singers were there that night, Ernest Tubb, Minnie Pearl, and Little Jimmy Dickenes. She loved watching the Hey Haw television show, especially the Hager brothers. Her favorite cooking show was The Two Fat Ladies; she felt a special kindship with Jennifer Paterson. Her Favorite actress was Jessica Tandy.
She is survived by her son Marvin, his wife Morena, and their two children Sam Abilar and Ilyn Abilar. Three grandchildren, Samantha, Mylinda and Isaiah. As well as her daughter Rita Hartwick, her two sisters Alice May Harris, and Edna Louise Smith. She will also be missed by her fur babies Beverly, Happy and Spike
She was preceded in death by her son Johnny Wayne Hartwick, her father, mother, and nine siblings, Betty Lou, Bobby Lee, Jimmy, Marie Joyce, Harvey Kenneth, Joe Donald, David Darrell, Barbara Diann, and an infant sister.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in her honor to Furever Friends, and the Enid SPCA with Brown-Cummings serving as custodian of the funds.
