Larry Earl Geurkink

A Memorial Service for Larry Geurkink, 84 of Enid, will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at Emmanuel Enid. Arrangements made by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home and Crematory.

Larry was born on September 5, 1941, to Earl and Edythe (Barnheart) Geurkink and passed away on September 17, 2025, in Enid.

He attended Enid High School from 1956-1959 and in those years, he was a state runner-up, state champion, and state champion – regional champion in baseball. He attended Oklahoma State University for one year and then went to Phillips University where, he ended up getting his bachelor’s degree. While at Phillips University, he earned the School’s Outstanding Athlete, NAIA Honorable Mention for Catcher, and a professional baseball contract for the Boston Red Sox. On September 17, 1960, Larry married Sandra (Newson) Geurkink in Enid. They had two sons, Mickey and Patrick Geurkink.

Larry coached baseball from 1965-1967 at Edmond High School, where he was awarded Conference Champion twice and 3A State Runner-up. He then coached at Putnam City High School from 1967-1972, where he was awarded Conference Champion four times and 4A State Runner-up twice. In 1973, he started coaching at Stroud High School. His high school coaching record was 213 wins and 108 losses. He was awarded with All-City Coach of the Year in 1969, All-Metro Coach of the Year and Oklahoma South All State Baseball Coach in 1971, and Oklahoma Baseball Coach of the Year in 1972. He coached baseball at Southwestern Oklahoma State University from 1977-1998, where his coaching record was 607 wins and 520 losses. He was OIC Champion in both 1987 and 1992 and in 1995 he was OIC Post-Season Champion. He earned OIC Coach of the Year in 1977, District 9 Baseball Coach of the Year in 1984 and 1987, OIC Coach of the Year, NAIA Area III Baseball Coach of the Year, District 9 Baseball Coach of the Year in 1992, and Oklahoma High School Baseball Coaches Association College Coach of the Year in 1996. Larry ended up being in the Coaches Hall of Fame.

In 2001, Larry returned to Enid. He attended church at Emmanuel Enid, and he enjoyed golf.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Geurkink; his son Patrick Geurkink and wife Kim of Colorado; 3 grandchildren Kylie, Bryan, and Alex; and 2 great-grandchildren Mic and Clara.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents Earl and Edythe Geurkink; brother Don Geurkink; and his son Mickey Geurkink.
