ENID, Okla. (June 14, 2026) — John D. Groendyke, Chairman of the Board for Groendyke Transport, passed away Saturday, June 13 in surrounded by loved ones in his home at the age of 81.

The only child of Groendyke Transport founder Harold C. Groendyke, John Groendyke is survived by his wife, Virginia, his 4 children, 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Funeral services are pending and will be released in a formal obituary from Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home in the coming days.

He was a man of many passions. An entrepreneur, collector, avid outdoorsman, and a rancher, he had a saying, “There’s no better fertilizer than a farmer’s footprints.”

John Groendyke’s footprints can be seen all over the United States and beyond.

John Groendyke was born on Aug. 17, 1944, to Harold and Pauline Groendyke. An only child, he grew up in Enid during the early years of his father’s company, witnessing and later assisting in its meteoric rise from upstart to one of the largest tank truck carriers in the nation.

At age 13, John Groendyke left Enid for Lexington, Mo., and Wentworth Military Academy, where he attended sixth grade through junior college. As with most things in his life, John Groendyke completed his schooling with distinction. Upon graduation in 1964, he had earned the rank of Cadet Brigade Commander, the highest possible rank at the time, and one that no longer exists today.

He then set his sights on a bachelor’s degree, enrolling at Oklahoma State University and joining the Sigma Nu fraternity, where he met several lifelong and influential friends. He graduated from OSU in 1966 and went on to earn a juris doctorate from the University of Oklahoma in 1969.

John Groendyke served in the Army from 1969 to 1971, beginning as a First Lieutenant and finishing as a Captain. He served in the transportation corps, but because he had a law degree, spent most of his time with the Judge Advocate General’s Corps in the courthouse.

Even while busy with school and the military, John Groendyke always made time to stay involved with his father’s business, playing a key role in Groendyke Transport’s first load to Mexico in 1964 and receiving the title of Vice President in 1966.

Twenty years later, John Groendyke took over as CEO and chairman of the board for Groendyke Transport in the wake of his father’s death at the age of 78, and he took the company to new heights.

John Groendyke served on the board for National Tank Truck Carriers for decades, and as chairman in 2001, serving as a major benefactor for the entire tank truck industry. When he stepped down as CEO in 2019, Groendyke Transport brought in about $240 million in revenue and finished the year with 1,400 employees, 1,000 trucks and 1,600 trailers servicing 49 states, Canada and Mexico.

His commitment and accomplishments at Groendyke Transport, and in the tank truck industry, would be more than enough to keep most people busy for a lifetime, but not John Groendyke. His passions varied, and some of his most beloved pastimes were playing and working in the great outdoors.

The son of homesteaders, John Groendyke’s father, Harold Groendyke, was born in a sod house on 160 acres of land near Beaver, Okla., in 1908. Because of Harold Groendyke’s upbringing, John Groendyke grew up with a healthy respect and love for the land and wildlife, and that 160 acres is still in the family today thanks to him.

John Groendyke owned and operated several ranches over the years, taking great pride in working the land. He also had an unmatched love of bird hunting. He served as chairman and a member of the board of directors for the Grand National Quail Club and Foundation, continuing the massive annual Grand National Quail Hunt in his hometown. John Groendyke’s greatest honor in the outdoor arena started in 1976, when he began his first term as commissioner of District 8 for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. He earned Commissioner of the Year in 1991 and served six terms as District 8 commissioner. His 44 years of service in the position made him the longest-tenured commissioner in the nation’s history.

Considering John Groendyke’s love of the land and lifetime spent in Enid, it’s no surprise he held the town and the state dear to his heart. He kept Groendyke Transport’s headquarters in Enid even as other businesses uprooted to larger metropolitan areas. He also served on several local and state boards, and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to groups, nonprofits, religious organizations, and businesses in Enid and throughout Oklahoma.

His donations tallied in the millions of dollars over his lifetime, including national organizations and generous donations to his alma maters Wentworth Military Academy, OSU and OU, among other educational institutions.

Another big recipient of John Groendyke’s generosity coupled with another of his hobbies – his collecting and restoring of classic automobiles. On several occasions, he raised money for the American Diabetes Association by showing his classic cars at their charity events.

Over the years, John Groendyke put together one of the most coveted collections of classic cars in the country, and became a regular participant and winner at some of the most prestigious car shows in Pebble Beach, Amelia Island, Meadowbrook, and San Marino.

John Groendyke’s lifetime contributions are felt and seen throughout many industries, organizations, and people, and they did not go unnoticed during his lifetime. In 2008, he received induction into the Oklahoma State University Spears School of Business Hall of Fame, an honor followed up in 2015 with induction into the Oklahoma State University Hall of Fame. He joined the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2013 for his many contributions to the state. He is also a member of the Enid Hall of Fame, received a lifetime achievement award from NTTC in 2024, and had his name added to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s headquarters and the bell tower at Wentworth Military Academy.

John Groendyke lived a full life, and he will always be remembered by the many people whose lives he impacted.

November 11, 1963 - June 10, 2026

Funeral service for Jeffrey Scott Shaffer, 63, will be 10:00 AM Monday, June 15, 2026, at World Harvest Church with Pastor Brad Mendenhall officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 pm in the Gate Cemetery, Gate, Oklahoma under the direction of Anderson-Burris Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the funeral home.

Jeffrey Scott Shaffer was born on November 11, 1962 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, foreshadowing his loyal and true status of being an Oklahoma State fan. He was born to Rod and Bonnie Shaffer and the young family soon moved to Arkansas, following Rod’s Air Force career. In 1969, the family moved to the Shaffer family homestead near Rosston and continued the family tradition of farming and ranching in Northwest Oklahoma. Jeff spent his formative years working and playing on the family ranch.

Jeff graduated from Laverne High School in 1981. He later met and married Lucinda Covalt in Woodward, in 1990. Jeff and Lucinda had two daughters (Mariah and Madison) while living in Woodward. The family moved to Enid in 1997, where the family expanded to include two sons (Jadon and Jace). Although Jeff and Lucinda divorced in 2003, they remained close friends and continued raising their children together.

After moving to Enid, Jeff began a long and distinguished career as a realtor. During his real estate career, Jeff served as director of the National Association of Realtors, director & committee executive of the Oklahoma Association of Realtors, board president of the Northwest Oklahoma Association of Realtors, and served on numerous other committees and boards. Jeff was named Northwest Oklahoma Realtor of the Year in 2011. He also wrote and co-wrote several real estate related legislative bills that later became Oklahoma laws. Jeff spent 24 years working at Coldwell Bank Realty III in Enid, where he also managed the office and mentored numerous young realtors. They were truly his second family. Jeff spent most of his life trying to serve and walk like Christ. He was consistently active in his church in various leadership positions and organized numerous youth related activities. He truly cared about helping others, especially those in need, and was known for his generous nature. People commonly came to Jeff when they were in need of advice. Jeff was a fun loving and adventurous man who was beloved by everyone who met him. The stories he told were usually followed by the common phrase “Oh Jeffrey…”

Jeff was preceded in death by parents Rod & Bonnie Shaffer, brother Jason Shaffer, nephew Bryce Shaffer, and grandsons Barrett Sierra and Titus Kennedy.

Jeff is survived by his children Mariah Bruno (Frank), Madison Shaffer, Jadon Shaffer (Chase), and Jace Shaffer (Corrinne), granddaughter Aspen Padilla, brother Jim Shaffer (Lana), and niece Kensli Shaffer. Along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who he considered family.

Memorials may be made through Anderson-Burris to World Harvest Uganda Missions.

During hydrant inspections, residents might experience temporarily low water pressure and discolored (rusty) water.

All fire hydrants in the community are known as dry barrel hydrants, meaning that there is no water in the barrel (above-ground) until the hydrant is opened. This helps ensure that the hydrants will not freeze in cold weather and will therefore be available when needed for fire emergencies. After every use and inspection, the hydrants are closed and the water drains from the barrel. Hydrants that do not drain properly or have other problems are reported to the City of Enid Public Works department for further maintenance.

This annual testing is essential to maintain the community’s Class 2 Insurance Services Office (ISO) Public Protection Classification, and to ensure that hydrants are operating efficiently for fire protection purposes. Along with maintaining the fire rating, this testing monitors the health of the city’s water system, identifies weak areas in the system, removes materials that settle in the water mains, and flushes out the lines. Checking each hydrant improves crew knowledge of hydrant locations. Fire department personnel will check to make sure there is adequate clearance around all fire hydrants to aid in their easy identification and access. The fire code requires at least 36 inches of clear area around the hydrant for proper access and helps assure the hydrant is visible from the road.

Garfield County Election Board Secretary, Shari Monsees, said early voting is open to all registered voters. “You don’t need to provide an excuse to vote early. Oklahoma allows early voting for all elections conducted by the County Election Board or State Election Board – from school board and municipal elections to state and federal elections. This is a great option for those who will be out of town on Election Day or who want to avoid long lines,” Monsees said.

Early voting is available Thursday, June 11 and Friday, June 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 13, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Garfield County Election Board Office located at 903 Failing Avenue, Enid. Monsees reminds voters that early voting is not available at polling locations.

Some voters may need assistance to vote because they are blind or visually disabled, physically disabled or infirmed, or illiterate. Such individuals may request to have an assistant or vote privately and independently using the ATI device attached to the voting device. Those who require assistance should talk to the precinct official or contact the County Election Board directly for instructions.

Joyce Fales was born on October 22, 1948, in Enid, Oklahoma, to Dale Oliver and Georgia L. (Daniels) Wilson. She passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, surrounded by her family.

Joyce grew up in Enid and graduated from Enid High School in 1966. She then attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University, graduating in 1970. While attending college, she met Richard Bailey, and they were united in marriage on March 21, 1970. Two children were born to this union, Robin and Robert Bailey.

Joyce began her teaching career in Kremlin in 1974, where she taught for 35 years before retiring in 2009.
On June 7, 2003, she married Dan Fales in Kremlin. They made their home in Kremlin before later moving to Enid.
Sitting idle was never part of Joyce’s plan. After retiring from teaching, she became the Education Director of Leonardo’s Children’s Museum. It was her dream job because, as she often said, “I get to teach, play, and the bonus is I get paid.” After 14 years of inspiring and educating children, she “retired” again in 2023. Service to others best describes Joyce’s life. She faithfully lived her Christian values and was a reflection of Christ to those she met. Over the years, she participated in the Willow View after-school program, taught Sunday School, and was active in the Kremlin Home Culture Club, The Wildhorse Gang, and the Kremlin-Hillsdale Academic Foundation Board of Trustees. She was instrumental in the success of Care Portal and was also an active member of the Garfield County Retired Educators Association.
Joyce spent countless hours sewing, crafting, and creating activities for children. She was not only an educator but also a mentor who profoundly impacted the lives of many. Even throughout her illness, Joyce consistently placed the needs of others before her own.
Among the many honors she received were the Beautiful Day Award (2011), Kremlin Lions Club Citizen of the Year (2011), Leonardo’s Family of the Year (2011), the Heart of a Servant Award (2023), and Hometown Hero (2025).

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Jim Wilson; and her husband, Dan Fales.
She is survived by her children, Robin Bailey and Robert Bailey; her granddaughters, Angela Moore, Naomi Bailey, and Jordan Bailey; her niece, Brandi Ehardt, and husband, Rick, along with their children, Abby and Liam; her sister-in-law, Donna Lamberti; her niece, Abby Park, and husband, Brian, and their daughter, Vivian; as well as numerous other family members and friends.

Memorials may be made through Anderson-Burris Funeral Home to Care Portal (www.111project.com care portal), the Kremlin-Hillsdale Academic Foundation (KHAEF), or Mission Willow View.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 12, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Willow View Church under the direction of Anderson-Burris Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Joyce requested that her life be celebrated with joy, so family and friends are encouraged to wear bright, colorful clothing in her honor. Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at Anderson-Burris Funeral Home.

Condolences can be made to the family online at Andersonburris.com.
A Celebration of Life Service for Peggy Annetta Kuykendall, 89, of Enid, will be Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church. The Rev. Wade Burleson will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Ladusau-Evans Funeral home. Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at the funeral home.

Peggy was born June 25, 1936, in Beaver Dam, Kentucky, to Roy Ray and Anna Mary Annis, the oldest of four children. She went to meet Jesus, her Lord and Savior on May 27, 2026, at Greenbrier Skilled Nursing.

Peggy grew up and lived in Beaver Dam, Kentucky, graduating from Beaver Dam High School in 1954. After graduation, she attended Western Kentucky for one year and since Western did not have a nursing program, she transferred to Murray State in Kentucky to pursue her dream to become a Registered Nurse. While attending Murray State, she met Robert "Darrell" Kuykendall. They were married on August 27, 1960, in Beaver Dam, Kentucky. They moved from Owensboro, Kentucky, to Enid in 1974. Darrell passed away November 4, 2004.

Even though Peggy did not like having to leave her boys at home, she enjoyed her work as a pediatric nurse at a hospital in Owensboro, Kentucky. After moving to Enid, she worked for the Oklahoma Blood Institute.

Peggy loved spending time with her family and friends. She liked playing cards and watching Hallmark movies. She enjoyed going to the activities of her children and grandchildren. She loved gospel music, quartet music and hymns. She made many trips to the Gospel Quartet Convention in Kentucky. Many, many trips were made to Branson, Missouri, to see how many shows that they could see in a trip, sometimes three a day! She loved sports, especially Kentucky and Oklahoma State basketball and more recently the OKC Thunder. After the loss of both their husbands, Peggy and Ann Price became quite the pair! They spent lots of time together, going on trips (finally arriving at their destination after getting lost at least once along the way), they had many adventures and shared a special bond.

Peggy was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where, for many years, she loved singing in the choir and participating in the annual Christmas Pageant. Even after she developed dementia, she was still able to sing hymns by memory with her beautiful soprano voice.

She is survived by her sons Greg and wife Christi Kuykendall, Todd and wife Sarah Kuykendall, both of Enid, and Eric and wife Stephanie Kuykendall of Claremore; grandchildren, Kaci and husband Alan Ford, Kyle and wife Elizabeth Kuykendall, both of Enid; Christopher and wife Morgan Kuykendall, of Weatherford; McKayla and husband Payton Bishop, of Piedmont; Nathan and wife Emily Kuykendall, of Owasso; Lauren and

husband Caleb Taylor, of Claremore; and Erin and husband Brayden Peckham, of Lubbock, Texas. She also had 12 great-grandchildren, Rylee Ford of Enid; Claire and Ryann Kuykendall, of Enid; Ella, Everett, Ezra and Eli Kuykendall, of Weatherford; Maxwell and Millie Bishop, of Piedmont; Conley, Caden and Clara Kuykendall, of Owasso. She is also survived by her brother, James Annis, of Pike Road, Alabama; her sister, Joyce Ralph, of Owensboro, Kentucky; her sister-in-law, Kim Annis, of Beaver Dam, Kentucky; her sister-in-law Donna Hicks, of Webb City, Missouri, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Darrell, she was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Anna Mary Annis; her brother, John Annis; two great-grandchildren, Reese and Heston Ford; her mother and father-in-law, Robert Byron and WeeNonah Kuykendall; and two brothers-in-law, Jack Ralph and Don Hicks.

Peggy was the best mom, mother-in-law, grandmother, Pepé, sister, aunt and friend. She will be missed greatly, but she is at peace and resting in the arms of Jesus.

The family wants to thank Brookdale Senior Living Center for their loving care of Peggy since September 2020. Also, they would like to thank Greenbrier Skilled Nursing Staff for their wonderful care over the last six weeks.

Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Enid with Ladusau-Evans as custodian of the funds.

Carrol Ann Anderson 83 years of age and entered into the presence of her Lord on Friday, May 29, 2026.

Carrol was born on December 13,1942 in Enid, Oklahoma to Eldon and Lillie Dale Broomfield. She attended school at Cimarron Valley School and then graduated from Ames Public Schools.

Carrol met the love of her life and married Donald Grey Anderson from Ringwood on May 24, 1960, in Ames, Oklahoma. They have celebrated 66 years of marriage and too that union was born three children, Monte, Dedria and Cody.

Immediately following their wedding they joined a harvest crew that cut wheat from Oklahoma as far as they could go north. Then after returning back to Ringwood they headed to Amarillo, Texas where Monte was born. While in Amarillo, Carrol worked for the American Quarter Horse Association.

They settled back in the Enid area where she was employed at Vance Air Force Base. Then in 1972 Don and Carrol established their home in Ringwood where they have resided for 54 years. During that time Carrol worked along side Don at Watonga Livestock, A2 Cattle Company, Enid Livestock and Stockman’s Commission Firm at the Oklahoma National Stock Yards. Carrol officially Retired in 2012 and continued to take care of books for Anderson Farms.

Carrol had a life full of ministry beginning in the late 1970’s with holding bible studies and ministry meetings in her home. Leading Women’s Aglow and worship at many ministry events in the area through the 1980’s. She dedicated her life and heart to fulfill the mission of the local church at Faith Center by launching prayer, women’s and children’s ministry. She was known by all as “Two Gun Annie”. Carrol was responsible for helping launch Provision Thrift Outreach that is currently preparing to move into a 8,000 square feet facility providing aid to local and international needs. For 25 years was a ministry leader on staff until she transferred her leadership to the next generation.

Carrol was steadfast in her faith, the Word of God, prayer and intercession. A testimony of her prayer life over and over again, was this, “When Annie Pray’s, Heaven Moves!” When family saw Annie in her home, the Bible was not far away from her. She lived her life as close to the Lord as possible. It was always her desire to see people and family come to know Jesus and make heaven crowded.

Carrol demonstrated her love for her family in every way possible. She would prepare Sunday meals for the family to gather after church. When they were able, for years, her and Don would provide a week of vacation for the family, with the special favorite food that everyone liked. She gave, by demonstrating a servants heart, passionate faith and unconditional love for those who knew her.

Proverbs describes a “Virtuous” woman and that is exactly who Carrol Anderson is and will be forever remember. Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil All the days of her life. She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms. She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy. Strength and honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her: “Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all. Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, And let her own works praise her in the gates. (Proverbs 31:1 - 31 NKJ)

Carrol and Don have 11 grandchildren, Whitney Scott of Ringwood, Aubrey and wife Jordyn of Lawton, Heston Scott of Marshall Texas, Allie Anderson-Lagrange and Husband Jon of Okeene, Abigail Anderson of Oklahoma City, Alexa and Husband Miles Howe of Okeene, Alec and wife Gracyn Anderson of Stillwater, Adam Anderson of Ringwood, Caleb Bryan of Elysian Fields, Texas, Ayven Anderson of Ringwood. Five great grandchildren, Triston, Cheyanne, Grey, Adeline, and Kohen.

Carrol is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Richard, Virgil Dean, Gerald Broomfield, sister Verda Weibel, her son Monte Anderson, son-in-law H. O. Scott, grandson Austin Anderson, daughter-in-law Mary Anderson.

A celebration of life service for Carrol Anderson will be 11:00 am Monday, June 8, 2026 at The Faith Center Fellowship in Meno, with burial to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid, Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday afternoon 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Saturday at Anderson-Burris Funeral Home & Crematory.

June 1, 2026 - Here's your reminder from the Sheriff: You will never receive a call from our agency asking for payment in regards to any "tickets", "warrants", "missed jury duty", etc. We will also never ask for payment via gift cards, bitcoin, apple pay, Cash App, Venmo, etc for the reasons above.

Once again, it has come to our attention that someone impersonating various Garfield County Sheriff's Office personnel and spoofing our office phone number is calling citizens and advising them that they have a warrant for their arrest or owe money for tickets. The person doing this makes claims that you must pay for your "warrant" or "ticket" to avoid being arrested. THIS IS A SCAM! HANG UP THE PHONE.
