3519566The funeral service for Kathryn Elizabeth Hiebert will be 2:00PM Sunday, December 13, 2015 in Grace Mennonite Church. Pastor Richard Stephens will officiate. Burial will follow in New Hopedale Mennonite Cemetery in Meno, under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.

Kathryn Elizabeth Unruh Hiebert was the third child born May 24, 1935 to Henry and Kate (Jantz) Unruh in Enid, Oklahoma. Kathryn was raised on a farm South of Meno, Oklahoma. She attended Lone Elm one room schoolhouse but graduated from Oklahoma Bible Academy in 1953. Kathryn met the love of her life Vernon Lee Hiebert in August of 1951 and they were married on August 1, 1954. The newlyweds lived for one year on a farm West of Orienta before they bought their first home in Cleo Springs. Kathryn and Vern raised their 3 sons in Cleo Springs before moving to her parent’s homestead in Meno in 1990. Kathryn was baptized on May 28, 1950 by Reverend Arnold Epp, who later married the happy couple. Kathryn was known for her kind and loving spirit. She was always making meals for others or inviting them over for supper. Kathryn’s thoughtfulness knew no bounds. She went out of her way to make others feel welcomed at church and especially in the family. Mrs. Hiebert was very active throughout her life, focusing mainly on helping others. She was the president of Ladies Aid for several years, she served on the Mennonite Central Committee’s regional board, taught Sunday school and Bible school and sang soprano in the church choir. Aside from her volunteer work, Kathryn sold Avon, worked for the Rainbow Connection daycare, and made the rounds babysitting family and friends, including a daughter-in-law and her grandchildren. Kathryn had many creative passions including cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, quilting, and antiquing. Kathryn could see the value in things before others could and filled her home with cherished trinkets she loved. Kathryn spent many hours caring for her lawn and lovely gardens. Her pride was the fish pond surrounded by flowers of different color and size, especially cannas. Her family and friends filled it with garden ornaments, her favorite being a hummingbird that lights up with different colors. Kathryn handmade a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren, and only recently started using a sewing machine for her many MCC donated projects. She might have been best known for teaching her family to make yo-yo’s or making doll and Barbie clothes. One of Kathryn’s favorite activities were weenie roasts. In the pasture beside their home, Kathryn would make the chili and Vern would roast the weenies and marshmallows over the fire. Kathryn celebrated her 80th birthday with a house full of family and friends making another treasured Weenie Roast memory for those who know and love her.

Memorials can be made in lieu of flowers to the Mennonite Central Committee in Kathryn’s name. Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents and brother Gene Unruh. Kathryn is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years Vernon Lee Hiebert and their 3 sons; Rex and his wife Robin of Meno, OK; Scott and his wife Janet of Brentwood, TN; Brian and his wife Sheila of Meno, OK and all 8 of her “favorite” grandchildren in order according to birth: Megan, Macey, Michael, Jenna, Joseph, Hailey, Kaitlyn, and Carson. Her sister Dorothy Wiebe of Whitewater, KS.
