James Johnson Waide, age 89, passed away on December 15, 2025, at Garland Road Nursing & Rehab. A memorial service will take place at Garriott Road Church of Christ in Enid, Oklahoma on 9 January at 10:30 am. A graveside service in Fort Collins, Colorado will be planned at a later date.
James was born on September 16, 1936, in Perico, Texas to Lewis J. Waide and Charlotte E. Waide (née Biggs).
He married Clara Madelene Wells on March 16, 1963, in Fort Collins, Colorado. James and Clara lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, from 1963 until moving to Fort Collins in 1967. In 1970, they relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1972, they began the undertaking of building a house in Edgewood, New Mexico, where they resided until moving back to Albuquerque in 1991. After his retirement, they moved to Hale Center, Texas, in 2000.
James was a faithful Christian, serving as a deacon at the University Church of Christ in Albuquerque and teaching Bible classes at the Hale Center Church of Christ. He spent the majority of his professional career as a research scientist at Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute in Albuquerque.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two brothers, Gene (Terry) and Roy Waide; and two sisters, Barbara La Perna and Mona Creech.
He is survived by his four children: Linda Waide of Gamerco, New Mexico; Cynthia Adams and her husband, James, of Hale Center, Texas; Rory Waide of Midland, Texas; and Gregory Waide and his wife, Jennifer, of Waukomis, Oklahoma. He is also survived by two siblings, Rick Waide of Otis Orchard, Washington, and Peggy Sue Ray of Dayton, Texas; eight grandchildren, Alaina Franklin and her husband, Justin; Nathaniel Adams; Danae Adams; Ashley Waide; Bryanna Waide; Susannah Waide; Greyson Waide; and Makaley Boyle and her husband, Andrew; and one great-grandchild, Genesis Boyle.
