Dennis William Gerken, 77, of Fairmont, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, in Hennessey, surrounded by the love of his family. His life was marked by devotion to his family, a deep love for the outdoors, and a joyful spirit that touched everyone who knew him.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairmont, Oklahoma, with Pastor Dwayne Schroeder and Pastor Kenneth Wade officiating. Burial will follow in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Fairmont under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 17, at the funeral home.

Dennis was born January 8, 1949, in Enid, Oklahoma, to Arnold and Adelee (Meier) Gerken. He grew up in the Fairmont community, attending grade school at Zion Lutheran School before graduating from Garber High School. He later attended Oklahoma State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science. During his time at OSU, Dennis was a proud member of the FarmHouse Fraternity, where he was known for his ornery antics, quick wit, and legendary fast-pitch softball skills. Stories were often told about batters who were less than eager to step up to the plate against his powerful pitches. On September 6, 1969, Dennis married the love of his life, Barbara, in Haltom City, Texas. Together they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and family. He and Barbara were lifetime members of Zion Lutheran Church, where he served in many capacities over the years. He also served on the Garber Co-op for many years. Dennis had a passion for sports that carried throughout his life. He enjoyed umpiring softball and baseball games and spent time officiating flag football at VAFB. He was well respected for his expertise in trapping, hunting, and fishing. Among his favorite adventures were noodling trips with his good friend Warren Miller—experiences that brought both excitement and plenty of stories to share. More than anything, Dennis loved sharing his passion for the outdoors with his family and friends. Whether he was teaching a skill, telling a story, or cheering from the sidelines, Dennis took great pride in watching his family grow, play sports, and pursue their interests. His infectious personality and contagious smile could light up any moment, especially when he was spending time with those he loved most.

Dennis is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Gerken; his daughters, Misty Hacker and her husband Brian, and Lisa Hladik and her husband Kaleb; and seven cherished grandchildren: Teegin, Landree and Jesse Hacker, and Jayden, Jenna, Kinley, and Kaylee Hladik. He is also survived by his sister, Dian Stringer and her husband Mike, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Adelee Gerken.

Dennis will be remembered as a devoted husband, an amazing father, a caring brother, and the very best “Papa” his grandchildren could have asked for. And as Dennis himself would say, “In other words,” he lived a full life surrounded by the people and things he loved most.

Memorial contributions in Dennis’s name may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or the Hennessey Care Center, with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home and Crematory serving as custodian of the funds.
