Gaslight Theatre Brings Doctor Faustus to The Turpin

ENID, OK - The Gaslight Theatre of Enid invites audiences into a world of dark magic, devilish bargains, and wickedly sharp humor with Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe, presented in The Turpin at Gaslight Theatre, the organization’s intimate black box performance space.

Directed by Alex Johnson, this bold production runs January 30–31 & February 5–7, 2026, with all performances beginning at 7:30 p.m. There are no matinee performances. Because Doctor Faustus takes place in The Turpin, seating is limited to just 50 tickets per performance, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience the show up close in a highly immersive setting.

Often described as an “elegant horror” classic, Doctor Faustus follows a brilliant scholar who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for power and pleasure. Accompanied by the demon Mephistophilis, Faust travels across Europe, entertains emperors and dukes, plays cruel tricks, and revels in spectacle—until time runs out and his cursed bargain comes due.

Part chilling moral tragedy and part black comedy, Gaslight’s Turpin production leans into theatrical tradition and stagecraft, featuring stylized masks, handmade props, and heightened design elements.

“Christopher Marlowe was the man who inspired Shakespeare. We wouldn’t have the Bard if it hadn’t been for Marlowe,” said director Alex Johnson. “I want audiences to experience the kind of theatre magic Shakespeare himself must have felt over 400 years ago. This play has a dark sense of humor, but it also has a dark beauty to it as well. The scenes with Mephistophilis and Faustus are among the best Marlowe ever wrote—and I think audiences will be surprised by how compelling this story is.”

Johnson’s production embraces “magic of a different kind,” using costumes, masks, makeup, lighting, sound, and special effects to create a thrilling theatrical experience for fans of the macabre and the mysterious.

Because of the show’s frightening makeup and costumes, heightened language, and dark themes, Gaslight Theatre recommends families with children under the age of 12 avoid this production. The show will include lighting effects, smoke effects, small pyrotechnics, and close proximity to the actors due to the intimate Turpin setting.

To preserve the integrity of the performance, audiences must remain seated for the entirety of each act. Due to the small space of The Turpin, audiences should be prepared for a more intimate seating arrangement than Gaslight’s main auditorium. Floor seating is prioritized for guests with mobility needs. Audience members who are able to climb two to three steps are kindly asked to leave floor seats available for those who may need them.
