25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration

King Diversity Award Nominations, Poster/Essay Contest Open

Mark your calendars…..the 25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration planning is underway and all Enid and Garfield County residents are invited to attend. This year’s events will take place on Sunday January 20, 2013 beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the newly remodeled Convention Hall in downtown Enid.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission is currently accepting Diversity Award nominations to recognize and celebrate outstanding accomplishments and sustained commitment by individuals, community organizations, businesses or non-profit groups in the area. The awards will honor those who have promoted an appreciation for diversity, human rights, and cultural understanding in Garfield County and the local Enid community. Nomination packets are available at the City of Enid Administration Building, the Library, or online at Enid.org, and are due by January 7, 2013.

The poster and/or essay contest is open to all students in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. All posters must reflect this year’s theme: “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work”. Posters should be no larger than 18 x 24 inches and no smaller than 8 ½ x 11 inches. The essay submissions should also reflect the theme and not exceed 500 words. All entries must include the student’s full name, school, teacher or sponsor, and grade on the back. Entries are due by January 14, 2013 no later than 2:00 pm at the City of Enid Administration Building, CDBG Department. Winning Posters and essays will be displayed at the Celebration. Posters and Essays must be picked up at the celebration.

Sponsors are still needed to assist with the costs involved in planning and holding the celebration. Established in 1989, the mission of the King Holiday Commission is to organize an annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To support this important annual community event, donations are needed through several different avenues: Cash donations – to be used as an honorarium for the speakers and to purchase contest prizes; and prize donations – such as gift certificates, savings bonds, student specific items, etc. All individuals or businesses that contribute will be recognized through the program listings distributed to all celebration attendees and through credit listings on the production of the event, which will air on PEGASYS.
