U.S. Olympian Coming To Enid

Two-Time U.S. Olympian, American Flag Bearer, and Lost Boy of Sudan, Lopez Lomong, is coming to Enid! Wymer Brownlee is sponsoring his visit on Friday, September 13 at the Gantz Center. There will be a lunch and presentation from noon to 1:30pm on the Northern Oklahoma College campus. Tickets to hear this amazing and inspirational story are only $30.

Lomong is a former Lost Boy of Sudan, who is the embodiment of the American spirit and of the notion that faith, diligence, and perseverance can help you achieve dreams beyond your wildest imagination.

Born in 1985 in the African village of Kimotong, Lomong was abducted by soldiers from the Sudan People's Liberation Army when he was just a child. After weeks watching other boys slowly die in the rebel camp, Lopez, with the help of three other boys, escaped to Kenya, where he spent the next ten years of his life as a refugee.

When he turned 16, with the assistance of the Catholic Charities, Lopez resettled with an adopted family in New York. To feel at home, he would go on long runs, athleticism that would take him to Northern Arizona University where he would win two NCAA championships.

In 2008, after becoming a US citizen, he made the US Olympic team. At the Beijing Olympics, Lopez was voted by his fellow countrymen to carry the US flag into the opening ceremonies.

In addition to running, Lopez focuses on his vision for peace in his civil war-torn home country. He is the founder of the Lopez Lomong Foundation, which helps the South Sudanese people obtain water, healthcare, education, and nutrition. In July 2012, he told his story in his memoir, Running For My Life. He currently is in training for the 2016 Olympics.

Lopez tells a story that represents what America is all about -- opportunity, excellence, dedication, and sacrifice to achieve one’s dreams. His story gives hope and inspiration to audiences who want to be their personal best in all areas of their life.

Getting Lomong to Enid was no small feat. He is in such high demand as a speaker that booking him entailed great planning and above average costs for travel and speaking. Enid residents will not get many opportunities to hear stories as compelling as this. Purchase your tickets at Wymer Brownlee, 201 N. Grand or Wheat Capital Running, 102 W. Randolph.
