The Story Behind The Memorial Flags

ENID, OK - This is story about the American flags at the corner of Elm and Cleveland, across from First Church of the Nazarene. This comes from Alice Reynolds. Photo taken by Mathew Harrington.
-
My husband, Keith, just a humble retired military guy, worked at Quantico National Cemetery, in VA, a few years ago.
-
He got the idea to honor a section of the cemetery by putting out flags at each headstone of that section on certain holidays. The holidays which he noticed the most family members visiting their loved one's resting place.
-
As he prepared the flags, by cleaning them and repairing the poles, he was touched how there were veterans from every branch in the section he selected. So, he painted the poles in the colors of each of the branches.
-
Then he remembered that he had been encouraged by people, in each of the branches over the years, and wanted to honor them as well.
-
So for each branch represented, all the poles of that branch have the name of a person from that branch of the military painted on them.
-
When we moved back to Enid, he didn't want to destroy all these flags, so he stores them respectfully, and chooses to post them in our yard to honor veterans on certain holidays.
-
When he worked at Quantico National Cemetery, he was fond of telling people he worked there to honor the two people who died for him, Jesus and the veterans.

Thank you for doing this. In my Facebook page I posted my husband’s sermon. He retired after 20 years in the military. We were sent here by the Air Force and stayed here. His sermon focused on those who gave their life for us, our fallen comrades and Jesus.
