• Parking is available at EHS and on the west and south side of the stadium.

ENID, OK – YWCA Enid’s Project Cinderella is back for its 8th season, continuing its mission to make prom and formal events accessible to all teens. Since its launch, the program has helped more than a thousand local students find the perfect dress, boosting confidence and ensuring no one misses out on these special moments due to financial barriers.

Project Cinderella is open now through Wednesday, April 23rd. Shopping appointments are required to ensure each participant receives personalized attention, and availability is limited. “We love seeing the excitement on each shopper’s face when they find the perfect dress,” said Austin Hazen, YWCA Public Relations Coordinator. “Appointments fill up fast the closer we get to prom, so we encourage students to book early at ywcaenid.com/project-cinderella.”

Project Cinderella offers free formal attire, including dresses, shoes, jewelry, and accessories, to teens in need. YWCA Enid is committed to making sure every student can attend their prom or formal event with confidence and dignity.

The program relies on the generosity of the community. Donations of formalwear, shoes, and accessories are always welcome to keep the shop stocked with a variety of styles and sizes. “Right now, our biggest needs are Elegant jewelry, formal shoes, and dresses in sizes 16 and up,” said Austin Hazen, YWCA Public Relations Coordinator. Volunteers are also needed to assist shoppers in finding their dream dress. Those interested in donating or volunteering can call 580-234-7581.

For more information about Project Cinderella, visit www.ywcaenid.com or call 580-234-7581.

YWCA Enid provides life-saving services for individuals experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. If you or someone you know needs help, call or text YWCA’s 24-hour Crisis Hotline at 580-234-7644 to speak with an advocate.

ENID, OK - City of Enid Technical Services Department announced they will start testing and programming the school zone beacons for Chisholm Public Schools, Pioneer-Pleasant Vale Schools, Enid Public Schools and all other school beacons within Enid city limits.

Motorists are advised to follow the posted speed limit in these areas at all times while beacons are intermittently in flash mode during this period.

Enid school zones are 20 mph during specified times and when lights are flashing.

School zones will have flashing lights. If you speed in a school zone you'll pay a fine. Officials will turn off the school beacons during the lunch period for most Enid Public Schools. According to schools officials, students no longer leave campuses during the lunch hour and all playgrounds are fenced and supervised during breaks. Officials have determined the use of the beacons is no longer needed during this time of day.

Drivers need to slow down and pay attention when kids are present – especially before and after school.

During the school year, motorists must share the road with children who are getting on and off the bus, riding their bikes to and from school and children who are walking.

A few precautions can go a long way toward keeping children safe:
• Don't block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic.
• In a school zone when flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection.
• Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign.
• Take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks and in all residential areas.
• Don't honk or rev your engine to scare a pedestrian, even if you have the right of way.
• Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians.
• Always use extreme caution to avoid striking pedestrians wherever they may be, no matter who has the right of way.

Some schools have specific drop-off procedures for the school year. Make sure you know them for the safety of all kids.

The following apply to all school zones:
• Don't double park. It blocks visibility for other children and vehicles.
• Don't load or unload children across the street from the school.
• Carpool to reduce the number of vehicles at the school.

If you're driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if you were driving behind a car. It will give you more time to stop once the bus’s lights start flashing. It is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.

• Never pass a bus from behind – or from either direction if you're on an undivided road – if it is stopped to load or unload children.
• If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended ALL traffic must stop.
• The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children. Stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus.
• Be alert. Children often are unpredictable and they tend to ignore hazards and take risks.

As a reminder, speeding in a school zone is a $215.00 fine and overtaking a stopped school bus is a $565.00 fine.

In years past all of the competing marching bands would parade around the Enid downtown square in what was known as the Million Dollar Parade. Bands from all over the country would converge on Enid for this yearly event.

In the heyday of Tri-State kids would sleep in churches and homes because there was never enough room to house them all. Band buses could be seen on every corner of town. The carnival rides were located on W. Broadway between the post office and court house.

ENID, OK - The 109th Annual May Fete celebration will take place Wednesday, May 1st at Government Springs Park at 6:00pm.

MAY FETE CEREMONY

Enid High May Fete is a rite of passage for the senior class of Enid High School. It comes from an old English May Day tradition which celebrates the coming of spring. Enid High turned this tradition into a ceremony that not only welcomes spring but also honors the senior class each year. It began in 1915 and has changed very little over the decades. Students dress in their finest attire and walk as couples around Government Springs Park. There's music, pageantry, the May Queen, her Herald, and their Court. Throughout much of its history, the May Queen, Herald and Court were elected by the senior class.

The May Fete ceremony usually begins with the processional around Government Springs lake, the crowning of the May Queen and the winding of the May Poles. The processional begins with a color guard, the Queen and Harold and the Court attendants. It is then followed by the senior class, who walk along the sidewalk and over the springs arched bridge, then around the lake to the waiting crowd.

The senior class and audience then watch as the Queen and her Court are seated on a throne covered by the springs gazebo. The crowd watches as the Herald crowns the Queen. She is presented with traditional red roses, a sparkling crown and the traditional May Fete kiss. All are then seated as they enjoy the sophomore and junior girls winding ribbon around the May poles.

(The following history of May Fete was authored in 1993 by Ruth Ann Sailors, long time art teacher at EHS and May Fete sponsor. Ruth Ann is responsible for collecting the history of May Fete which is displayed in the halls of EHS. Compiled by Gary L. Brown)

A few hours before sundown on an evening each May, people gather on a grassy hillside in Government Springs Park to view the colorful and romantic panorama call May Fete. This festival is based on an old English May Day tradition which celebrates the coming of spring; however, at EHS this occasion is used to honor the senior class each year. Since 1915 May Fete has featured students, who, with music, pomp, and pageantry, pay homage to their May Queen, Herald, and Court.

May Fete has changed little since its inception in 1915. The first May Queen was elected by the student body and crowned by the President of the Senior Class, who served a her Herald. Later, the Herald became an elected position. In the early years, Queens chose their attendants, who likewise, chose their escorts. Presently, all members are elected by the senior class. Although the first Queen was crowned at Government Springs Park, other has been crowned on the front steps of the school, on the football field, or in the auditorium. Elaborate themes were used incorporating extensive costuming and pageantry. Traditionally, a formal or informal dinner party has been given for the Court member by the Queen and Harold. Some unique situations have transpired through the years. For example, several Queens later married their Heralds. A pair of twins were elected one year, which naturally called for two Heralds. An early Queen rode her horse around the lake as part of the pageantry, and a Harold led the procession wearing a white plaster case on his broken foot. One Queen passed the legacy on to her daughter, and several sisters have shared the honor of being elected Queen in their respective graduating years.

Today, May Fete consists of the processional around the lake, the crowning ceremony, musical entertainment, and the winding of the May Pole. Preceded by a color guard, the Queen and Harold with the Court attendants and a tiny cortege of preschool children serving as pages, lead the senior processional along the sidewalk between green lawns, over a large arched bridge, and round the lake at Government Spring Park. Flanked by a quiet waterfall, the fountained waters of the lake reflect the mingled hues of colorful gowns as strains of music float on the evening breeze. Light perfumes blend with roses and spring flowers trailing over the trellises in the park’s gardens. For one elegant evening, every senior is able to participate in a royal procession with young men escorting beautifully gowned young ladies.

After the procession circles the lake, the Queen and her Court ascend the steps and are seated on a throne within a Greek-styled gazebo. The seniors sit nearby to view the crowning of the Queen. The Herald presents her with traditional red roses, a sparkling crown, and a kiss to seal the moment. Everyone is entertained by the EHS choir and bank. Strains of "Come Touch the Sun," play as sophomore and junior girls wind a multi-ribboned May pole in front of the gazebo. As the sun sinks behind the hill, nostalgia settles in the hearts of the young and old since May Fete signals the departure of another senior class. The evening ends with an all school dance held in honor of the seniors.

Sustaining its popularity with students and patrons through the years, May Fete has endured disastrous floods, times of war and depression, changing social attitudes, and dress styles. May Fete is a unique Enid High tradition that has and will continue to bond decades of Plainsmen together in heart and spirit.

Families must enroll students online at www.enidpublicschools.org/enrollment. Enrollment will open on April 1 and will be completed exclusively online. Guardians enrolling their children as EPS students for the first time will need the children’s immunization record, birth certificate (no hospital footprints, please) and verification of address, such as a utility bill.

Enrollment is first come, first served. Randy Rader, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education, expressed the crucial need for guardians to enroll their students as soon as possible.

“We are thrilled every year to welcome our newest, youngest learners to EPS,” said Rader. “We pride ourselves in meeting the needs of all families but are also conscientious of our staffing needs. We encourage all families to enroll as soon as they can so we can place students and continue to serve families by having sites staffed adequately.”

Families who do not have access to a device to complete enrollment online are encouraged to visit the EPS Welcome Center at 500 S. Independence between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. beginning April 1. Resources and assistance will be available.

All EPS four-year-old programs focus on the social, academic, physical and emotional needs of children. Students must be four-years-old on or before September 1, 2024.

Beginning May 6, full-day kindergarten enrollment for students who are new to EPS will be open to families online. Parents should enroll their student online at www.enidpublicschools.org/enrollment or visit the Welcome Center located in the Administrative Services Center, 500 S. Independence. Online enrollment will be open May 6.

Students must be five-years-old on or before Sept. 1, 2024 to enroll. If a child is currently an EPS pre-kindergarten student, it is not necessary to attend kindergarten enrollment because their school will send out pre-enrollment for kindergarten via call, text or email.
