ENID, OK - Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. Approximately one in eight U.S. women (roughly 13 percent) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

Sandy Schapansky, like thousands of other women diagnosed with breast cancer, never imagined she would be one of them.

A wife and mother of two grown daughters, Schapansky is like many women in their mid-50’s – enjoying an empty nest, watching grandchildren play sports and traveling as much as possible. She has a friendly, outgoing personality and beautiful smile. If you met Sandy on the street, you would never guess the hardships she has confronted over the past 12 months.

Schapansky’s story really begins 25 years ago, when she was just 30 years old. “I had just had a baby, and I discovered a lump in my right breast,” she said. “I had it checked out, and it turned out to be what is called macrocalcifications, which are small calcium deposits in the soft tissue of the breasts. These are usually noncancerous, although some patterns can be a sign of cancer.” Schapansky went on, “It looks kind of like glitter on a mammogram. It can be completely normal, but is something that can turn into cancer, so I began to get screened for breast cancer every one to two years.”

She continued her screenings throughout her 30’s and 40’s without incident. No new lumps. Nothing to be concerned about.

In late 2019, Schapansky, then age 55, was working for INTEGRIS Health ENT Jerome Dilling, M.D., as a medical assistant. “Things were very busy at work and busy in my personal life, and I felt like I didn’t have time to squeeze in my mammogram, so I put it off. I told myself I would do it after the beginning of the year, when things started to slow down.” Then COVID-19 hit, sending everything into a tailspin.

A few months later, in September 2020, Schapansky felt an unusual lump in her left breast, which she thought to be somewhat odd, because her right breast was the one with the microcalcifications and the one she always kept a close eye on. She immediately scheduled a mammogram.

An hour after the appointment, the clinic called and asked her to come back in for additional views and an ultrasound of her left breast. While she was there, they also scanned her underarm, which Schapansky knew was not a good sign. They told her at that time the abnormality that was found appeared to be cancerous.

The next step was to undergo a guided biopsy. The results came back confirming that she in fact did have cancer - invasive ductal carcinoma, which is the most common type of breast cancer, representing about 80 percent of breast cancer cases.

An MRI further confirmed that the cancer had spread to Schapansky’s lymph nodes, meaning that her cancer was designated as stage three.

Schapansky said she felt more comfortable with a female surgeon and chose INTEGRIS Health’s Stephanie Taylor, M.D., located in Yukon, to perform a lumpectomy and remove two lymph nodes to which the cancer had spread.

Following her surgery, Schapansky began chemotherapy treatment with Sumbal Nabi, M.D., and her team at the INTEGRIS Cancer Institute of Enid in December 2020. “They are the kindest, best support system you could ever imagine,” she said. “When you’re scared to death of the unknown, they put you at ease.”

Schapansky continued on about her experience, “Throughout the process I was sick, I cried, and I asked if I was going to lose my hair. Dr. Nabi told me I would. That first day of chemo was the hardest, most emotional day I have faced. I got really sick. The thing that got me through is knowing the hurt others have faced, like losing a child. Chemo was bad, but I know there are worse things that I could have faced.”

In April of this year Shapansky finished her treatments and went back to work. Dilling retired, so she ended up working with OB/GYNs Michael S. Jackson, M.D. and Andrea Partida, D.O., at INTEGRIS Women’s Health Enid. “I feel like this is exactly where I’m supposed to be,” Schapansky said of her new role. “I feel like God put me here for a reason, and I’m really enjoying it.”

Two weeks after her chemo treatments ended, Schapansky began taking radiation therapy each day after work at the INTEGRIS Bass Radiation Oncology Clinic, completing 33 treatments. “It was scary to get started, just like chemo, but the girls in the clinic really helped make me feel comfortable and at ease. Their care and compassion made such a big difference for me.”

It’s been a long year for Schapanksy, and this month she will go for her final CAT scan to see if she is now cancer-free, although her tumor markers indicate that she is.

After her experience, Schapansky’s message to other women is simple. “Know your breasts. If you are familiar with them, then you will be more likely to recognize changes if they do happen. Be proactive.”

She emphasizes that communication with your physician is important as well. “If you think something might be amiss, call your doctor. Phone calls are free,” she said with a smile.

And, of course, she wants to encourage women who are the appropriate age to get those mammograms and not put them off. Don’t skip them. “Had I not waited and put my mammogram off, I feel like I probably would have caught my cancer sooner, before it had moved into my lymph nodes,” she said.

Sandy has inspired her sister and both daughters to become more proactive in their own breast health with mammograms and self-exams, something that she feels good about.

“I never dreamed I’d have breast cancer. It came out of nowhere,” Schapansky said. “But today, I am 56 years old and looking forward to the future. I can’t live in fear.”

ENID, OK - INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center is excited to welcome general surgeon, Bret Haines, D.O. Haines joins John Goulart, D.O., as part of the INTEGRIS General Surgery Enid team.

Born in Tulsa, Haines spent most of his childhood growing up in Stillwater, Okla., where he graduated high school. He completed his undergraduate studies at Oklahoma State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. While at OSU, he walked onto the football team as a place kicker. He also met his wife, Jessica, there. Together they share four children.

Haines first became interested in medicine as a young boy. His father is a family medicine physician, and Bret grew up observing the positive impact a career in medicine has on patients and the community.

After completing his undergraduate degree at OSU, he received a certificate in public health from the University of Oklahoma. He then attended medical school at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at Oklahoma State University Medical Center in Tulsa. During his exposure to general surgery, he immediately felt called to it because surgery provides the unique opportunity to combine both clinical knowledge and technical skills.

“I am eager to begin establishing relationships with my patients and peers and begin to utilize my skills to improve the health and lives of my patients,” Haines said. “We also have family in Enid, so I was immediately attracted to this opportunity. I look forward to being a part of the INTEGRIS Health system.”

Some of Haines’s areas of interest include laparoscopic/robotic surgery, abdominal wall hernias, gastrointestinal disorders and endoscopy.

Haines officially begins practicing Monday, Aug. 30. His office is located at 620 S. Madison, Suite 108 in Enid.

Darrell was born cognitively disabled and has worked in the dietary department as a dishwasher at INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center in Enid for almost 24 years.

While discussing ideas to boost team morale during a recent team huddle meeting, Darrell suggested he dress as Superman on occasion while working in the kitchen to make everyone smile and remind caregivers they are superheroes.

Bethany loved the idea and took it one step further. She planned a “secret identity day” where the staff wore superhero t-shirts under their scrubs on the same day Darrell dressed up as Superman. When they all unveiled their hidden identities to him, he was beyond thrilled.

Nowadays, the team never knows when Superman will arrive at work for the day.

“He loves Superman, and it brings us so much joy when he wears his costume. He truly is the sweetest, purest soul,” says Bethany.

Darrell’s super powers are kindness, compassion and a positive attitude. We think he is the closest thing to a true superhero that really exists.

ENID, OK - INTEGRIS Heart Hospital, in partnership with INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center, is proud to announce the expansion of cardiology services for Enid and Northwest Oklahoma patients.

The agreement will expand upon the existing cardiology services provided by Douglas Brown, M.D., and Matthew Thoms, PA-C, by bringing cardiologists from Oklahoma City-based INTEGRIS Heart Hospital to continue our mission of partnering with people to live healthier lives.

The expanded cardiology clinic will help keep business in the Enid community while offering residents access to the most comprehensive cardiology program in the state - INTEGRIS Heart Hospital, which is based at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center and INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center. The program will not only offer additional cardiology providers but will also include an outpatient clinic with a cardiac electrophysiologist and a cardiothoracic surgeon.

“With heart disease so prevalent in Oklahoma, the ability to grow the cardiology presence in Northwest Oklahoma provides greater access to cardiology care needed by so many,” said Mel Clark, M.D., cardiologist and president of INTEGRIS Cardiovascular Physicians. “INTEGRIS Bass Baptist has had a strong cardiology program for years, and we are excited to grow with them.”

The additional physicians serving the Enid and Northwest Oklahoma community include cardiologists: Adam Burroughs, M.D.; George Chrysant, M.D.; Jered Cook, M.D.; Terrie Gibson, M.D.; Sean Halleran, M.D.; Ryan Norris, D.O.; Alex Topliceanu, M.D.; Gary Worcester, M.D; and cardiothoracic surgeon, David Vanhooser, M.D.

“INTEGRIS Heart Hospital is a well-respected, trusted program with a group of cardiologists and surgeons who have served the state of Oklahoma for many years,” said Sarah Matousek, M.D., medical staff president of INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center. “We are excited to expand our cardiology program through this partnership.”

ENID, OK - The moment a child is born is usually one of the happiest moments in a parent’s life. That’s one reason many choose to work in labor and delivery – to be a part of that special time of celebration.

Unfortunately, there are times when what should have been the best day, turns into a nightmare. When a baby is stillborn. According to the Centers for Disease Control, stillbirth affects about 1 in 160 births, and each year about 24,000 babies are stillborn in the United States.

It’s not something anyone likes to think about, but it is a sad reality for some, and an occurrence that labor and delivery nurses have to learn to cope with from time to time.

Many large hospitals have a designated staff person, known as a bereavement coordinator, there to assist parents, family members, nurses and hospital staff when these tragedies do occur. Smaller facilities often times do not have a bereavement coordinator, leaving nurses and other caregivers to navigate these situations, doing their best to comfort families and one another while adhering to protocols and guidelines.

At INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center, registered nurse Talya Gross has taken on this difficult role. Gross has spent her entire nursing career- 15 years - in labor and delivery at INTEGRIS Bass. “Before I started nursing school, I knew I wanted to work in labor and delivery,” Gross says. “I loved the experiences I had giving birth, and I wanted to help make the experience as positive as possible for others.”

Gross, however, goes above and beyond when it comes to dealing with stillbirths. “Experiencing a stillbirth from a nurse’s perspective is very stressful. We are heartbroken, but at the same time we still have to make sure we are following state and hospital policies and checking all the necessary boxes.”

Denese Campbell, nurse manager for women and children, house supervisors and float pool, has worked with Gross over the last three years. “In a stillbirth situation, Talya works diligently to organize available resources for parents, to ensure that every stillborn baby is bathed and clothed, with its own swaddle blanket, and to make sure each one is treated with love and dignity.”

Campbell continues, “Families spend months preparing for their newborn. It’s difficult to imagine leaving the hospital without your newborn in your arms.”

Recently, Gross began providing moms and dads with a bag with their child’s name embroidered on it and weighted with sand to the exact weight of their baby at delivery as a way to help families honor and remember their baby. These bags are also designed to help bring comfort and healing.

Gross’s compassion goes beyond helping families when a stillbirth occurs. “Even if Talya is not working when a fetal stillbirth occurs, she still makes herself available to the caregivers on the unit to help them navigate through the stressful time and to ensure that the nurses and the family have the resources needed to begin the healing process,” Campbell says.

Ultimately, Gross wants to do everything she can to help bring comfort and support to parents and families who experience stillbirth. “I want to make sure that we do everything we can to preserve their child’s memory.”

INTEGRIS Health University powered by INTEGRIS Health and Oklahoma Christian University, is the result of an innovative academic partnership designed to increase the available pipeline of nurses.

There has been a nursing shortage in the United States, including Oklahoma, for many years – long before the existence of COVID-19. One thing the pandemic has certainly shown us, is that nurses are the backbone of the medical profession and we desperately need more of them.

INTEGRIS Health University creates flexibility for candidates by allowing them to work in a hospital setting while receiving their necessary credits. It uses a transformational nursing education model that is moving away from traditional education to a more blended approach with hands-on learning and online instruction.

The Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) to Registered Nurse (RN) program is open to CNAs and non-CNAs alike, meaning you do not have to be a CNA to participate. In fact, if a candidate is not already a CNA, INTEGRIS Health will pay for that candidate to become one through partnerships with several different vocational schools.

“INTEGRIS Health is eager to partner with academic institutions across the state to begin strategically transforming the future of nursing for Oklahoma,” says Kerri Bayer, the chief nurse executive at INTEGRIS Health. “It is through intentional effort that we will begin establishing pathways into the most noble and trusted profession of nursing in a way that aligns with student needs of today.”

She continues, “We are not only committed to growing the nursing workforce, but to ensuring life-long success for our nurses.”

The program is intended for both recent high school graduates and adults. Each student will perform delegated direct patient care activities to an assigned group of patients, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Interested candidates will need to apply to both INTEGRIS Health and Oklahoma Christian University. Application forms provided in hyperlinks.

ENID, OK - The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) announced that all adult Oklahomans are eligible to schedule a COVID-19 vaccine appointment beginning on Monday, March 29.

Oklahoma has consistently ranked among the top states in vaccine distribution and is one of the first states to open vaccine appointments to the general public.

“This is a momentous day for the state of Oklahoma,” said Dr. Lance Frye, Commissioner of Health. “I want to thank all of our public health staff, partners and volunteers who have served on the front lines and kept vaccines moving safely and efficiently. Navigating the COVID-19 pandemic has been a huge undertaking and a massive public health challenge. Lives have been saved as a result of the drive and determination of frontline medical workers, county health departments and our partners across the state.”

“Opening phase 4 is certainly a milestone, but we haven’t won the fight yet,” said Keith Reed, Deputy Commissioner of Health. “We’ve met some ambitious goals leading the state’s largest vaccination effort in a very short period of time. However, we can’t let our guard down just yet. Now that everyone is eligible, don’t wait to get your vaccine. The best thing you can do to protect yourself and others is to get it as soon as you’re able.”

The vaccine is available at no cost. Oklahomans 16+ are encouraged to register through the state’s Vaccine Scheduler Portal at vaccinate.ok.gov if they haven’t done so already. After registration, they will see available phase 4 appointments on the portal starting March 29. Appointments for phases 1-3 will also remain available on the portal.

As a reminder, the state’s vaccine portal is just one option for scheduling an appointment — vaccine appointments are also available through many other local pandemic providers across the state. You can ask your personal healthcare provider about the vaccine, or you can use the federal vaccine locator at vaccinefinder.org to check for appointments at local pharmacies.
Several companies nationwide have adjusted their production facilities to help as the pandemic spreads. Aidance Scientific is one of the companies that has reconfigured its facility to produce thousands of Hand Sanitizer units for state agencies during the COVID-19 crisis. Oklahoma welcomes local companies to join the fight against the pandemic.

Mental Health – Programs or services focused on improving the prevention, detection, treatment and/or management of depression and reducing suicide rates.

Access to Care – Programs or services focused on Improving access to medical care services, behavioral health or substance use treatment.

Food Insecurity – Programs or services focused on improving access to healthy and affordable food as well as healthy food and lifestyle choices education.

Tobacco Cessation – Programs or services focused on the reduction of vaping, electronic cigarettes, tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure.

Local not-for-profit programs or services working to positively impact any of the above-mentioned areas through risk reduction, behavior change, screenings or treatment strategies, may apply for grant funding in any amount ranging from $1,000 to $25,000. Applications will be reviewed by a panel which will determine grantee or grantees as well as amount(s) received. Recipients will be announced in March.

ENID, OK - Due to the record number of COVID-19 cases in Garfield County and Enid, a mask mandate will be considered during the Mayor and Board of Commissioners Regular Meeting on December 1, 2020. The number of current cases in Garfield County is now over 700. In Enid, the current cases are 629, with 33 deaths, and 2,653 recovered.

The meetings will be held on December 1, 2020 at the Stride Bank Center. The Study Session will begin at 5:00 pm, followed by the Mayor and Board of Commissioners Regular Meeting at 6:30 pm. See the Emergency Declarations here. You will need to sign in to make a public comment.

The Enid City Commission voted down an ordinance in July that would have required residents to wear masks in public areas and when social distancing would not have been possible. An emergency meeting was held that went for over four hours.

It was defeated by a vote of 5-2. Ward 3 Commissioner Ben Ezzell and Ward 4 Commissioner Jonathan Waddell voted in favor of the mandate. Mayor George Pankonin, Ward 1 Commissioner Jerry Allen, Ward 2 Commissioner Derwin Norwood, Ward 5 Commissioner Rob Stallings and Ward 6 Commissioner David Mason voted against.

That emergency declaration would have allowed the City of Enid to impose $100 to $200 fines for noncompliance of the mandate. Although it added "teeth" to policies already in place, Enid Police Chief Brian O’Rourke thought the ordinance would be unenforceable.

Public health officials from Garfield County Health Department, INTEGRIS and St. Mary’s leaned toward some type of policy to help slow the rising cases of COVID-19. There was worry that beds would begin to fill up with more cases and the eventual onset of the flu season.

Garfield County at that time had 138 total positive cases with 95 recovered and two deaths. There were 41 active cases in Garfield County with an average of about five new cases a day.

In August, another proposed mask mandate failed 4-3. Ward 3 Commissioner Ben Ezzell, Ward 2 Commissioner Derwin Norwood and Ward 4 Commissioner Jonathan Waddell voted in favor of the mandate. Mayor George Pankonin, Ward 1 Commissioner Jerry Allen, Ward 5 Commissioner Rob Stallings and Ward 6 Commissioner David Mason voted against.

Mayor Pankonin also canceled a special meeting for a third mask mandate proposal when there were not enough votes for it to pass.
