ENID, OK, April 11, 2026 - by Curtis Tucker, Enid Buzz

Letter carriers across Oklahoma will once again help fight hunger during the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 9.

Now in its 34th year, the effort encourages residents to leave nonperishable food donations by their mailboxes before their mail carrier arrives. Donations collected along postal routes in central and western Oklahoma will benefit the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and its partner agencies, helping stock shelves for local families in need.

Residents should watch for a plastic donation bag in their mailbox during the week leading up to the drive. Food can be placed in that bag or in any plastic bag and left by the mailbox for pickup on May 9.

Since the food drive began in 1992, more than 14.2 million pounds of food have been collected. Organizers say last year’s drive helped provide more than 750,000 meals. All donations stay local to support communities across the region.

“Hunger affects every community, and addressing it takes community action,” said Kelli Hayward Walsh, manager of OG&E Community Outreach & Engagement. “Stamp Out Hunger is neighbors helping neighbors, and OG&E stands alongside the Regional Food Bank in this impactful effort to help our neighbors.”

Regional Food Bank CEO Stacy Dykstra said the drive continues to make a direct difference for Oklahomans facing hunger.

“The beauty of Stamp Out Hunger is how it unites our communities through a simple act of giving,” Dykstra said. “Donations collected through this drive directly support our neighbors experiencing hunger.”

Organizers welcome all nonperishable food items. Some of the most-needed items include:

peanut butter
canned tuna or chicken
canned fruits
pasta and canned sauce
soup and stew

Healthier items such as whole grain and low-sodium foods are also encouraged.

Those who would rather give financially can text “StampOK” to 53-555. Organizers say every $1 donated helps provide three meals to Oklahomans facing hunger.

The food drive is presented by OG&E and American Fidelity, with additional support from CSAA-AAA Insurance, OU Health, WEOKIE Foundation, Bank of Oklahoma, and The Oklahoman.

More information is available through the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.

United Way of Enid and Northwest Oklahoma will host its 2026 Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 23rd, from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm, in the Grand Ballroom of the Stride Bank Center. The meeting will feature lunch, special presentations, the 2025-2026 campaign totals, and special announcements about the 2026-2027 Campaign Chair, the 100th Red Feather theme, and plans for the year. The cost of attending is $40 per person or $400 for a table for 8.

The Slater Family served as 2025-2026 chairs for the campaign. Highlights of the United Way’s Campaign came in the form of several pledges, contributions, and donated gifts of stock.

“The Golf Tournament, Pillar’s Dinner, and Chili Cook-off events were once again huge successes, raising funds to help support our 14 partner agencies. Thank you to everyone who donated their time, energy, or money in any way, large or small, or gave words of encouragement. We are truly blessed to have been a part of this campaign and the United Way organization,” Shanda Slater stated.

Funds raised through the United Way of Enid & Northwest Oklahoma’s campaign go to support 14 nonprofit member agencies: Booker T. Washington Community Center, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, SCOUTING AMERICA Last Frontier Council, Community Development Support Association, Denny Price YMCA, Human Services Alliance of Greater Enid, Garfield County Child Advocacy Council, 4RKIDS, Loaves and Fishes, RSVP of Enid and North Central Oklahoma, Thayne A. Hedges Regional Speech & Hearing Center, The Salvation Army, Youth & Family Services North Central Oklahoma and YWCA of Enid. Funds also support research to identify human service needs throughout Enid & NW Oklahoma communities and help accountable health and human services agencies to meet those needs by improving the health, safety, education, and economic well-being of our most vulnerable citizens.

April 17th is the deadline to RSVP or purchase seats for the event. Please call Kim at the United Way office at (580) 237-0821 or email kim@unitedwayenid.org

ENID, OK - Hospice Circle of Love volunteers have been working hard at sorting their latest book donations in preparation for their upcoming spring book sale fundraiser to be held April 10th from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM and April 11th from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The event takes place in the metal building just north of Circle of Love’s office at 314 S. 3rd.

“The titles are intriguing and fall into a variety of genres.” commented event organizer Julie Nelson. “We have large selections of mysteries, fiction novels, religious fiction, westerns, children’s books and religious books. Our non-fiction section is also large and broken down into subcategories, including biographies, war and history, animals, sports, crafts, Oklahoma and true crime.”

Additional items to be sold include coffee table books, cookbooks, puzzles, books on tape and DVDs.

Several popular authors are represented in the selection, and most books are in good to great condition. All Hardbacks will be $2.00 and paperbacks will be $1.00. Proceeds help Circle of Love continue to care for patients without a Medicare or insurance hospice benefit at no charge.

“We are looking forward to the event. It is always fun to see customers find a favorite author or the next book in a series that they have been looking for. It is also nice to see kids get excited about picking out books. Reading is so important for us during all of life stages,” Nelson added.

Studies show that regular reading significantly improves brain connectivity, reduces stress and even enhances empathy towards others. Early reading habits for children are linked to increased brain power and better mental health.

Hospice Circle of Love has been holding their book sale fundraisers for 38 years. The organization serves terminally ill patients in their home or nursing home. A team of caregivers provides pain and symptom management, personal care and guidance to help the patient have a higher quality of life at the end of life. They are the only not-for-profit hospice in the area and are Five Star Rated through Medicare’s Family Caregiver Survey.

Since its launch, the program has helped more than a thousand local students find the perfect dress, boosting confidence and ensuring no one misses out on these special moments due to financial barriers.

Project Cinderella is open now through Wednesday, April 23rd. Shopping appointments are required to ensure each participant receives personalized attention, and availability is limited. “We love seeing the excitement on each shopper’s face when they find the perfect dress,” said Austin Hazen, YWCA Public Relations Coordinator. “Appointments fill up fast the closer we get to prom, so we encourage students to book early at ywcaenid.com/project-cinderella.”

Project Cinderella offers free formal attire, including dresses, shoes, jewelry, and accessories, to teens in need. YWCA Enid is committed to making sure every student can attend their prom or formal event with confidence and dignity.

The program relies on the generosity of the community. Donations of formalwear, shoes, and accessories are always welcome to keep the shop stocked with a variety of styles and sizes. “Right now, our biggest needs are Elegant jewelry, formal shoes, and dresses in sizes 16 and up,” said Austin Hazen, YWCA Public Relations Coordinator. Volunteers are also needed to assist shoppers in finding their dream dress. Those interested in donating or volunteering can call 580-234-7581.

For more information about Project Cinderella, visit www.ywcaenid.com or call 580-234-7581.

YWCA Enid provides life-saving services for individuals experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. If you or someone you know needs help, call or text YWCA’s 24-hour Crisis Hotline at 580-234-7644 to speak with an advocate.

ENID, OK - Hospice Circle of Love invites you to remember a loved one, who is no longer with you, with an ornament in their memory at the 2024 Tree of Life. Ceramic angel and star ornaments are available for a $25.00 donation. Anyone is invited to participate. Ornaments with the names of Hospice Circle of Love’s patients who have passed away in the last year will be automatically included at no charge. Duplicate ornaments are available to give as gifts for $10.00 each.

The ornaments will be featured on a trio of Christmas trees at a celebration to be held December 15th at 3:00 PM in the Hallie Gantz Student Center at NOC Enid. This event will include a reading of the names of those being remembered, Christmas music and a brief spiritual message. It will end with a cookie and punch reception during which time, staff can interact with former hospice families and participants can pick up their ornaments. Attendance is not mandatory. Ornaments may also be picked up at the Hospice Circle of Love office, 314 S. 3rd.

“The holiday season is one that can bring many emotions for those who have lost a loved one. Joyful emotions and sorrowful emotions. We at Hospice Circle of Love consider it an honor and a helpful thing to take the time to remember your loved one with you and care for you at our Tree of Life Ceremony,” said Bereavement Coordinator Shelby Maddox.

To order an ornament, stop by the Hospice Circle of Love office at 314 S. 3rd or call 580-234-2273 to have an order form mailed to you. All proceeds from the event will be used to care for hospice patients who don’t have a hospice benefit through Medicare or insurance. Circle of Love never charges patients for their services. Circle of Love is the only not-for-profit hospice based in Enid, as well as the only 5 star rated hospice through Medicare’s family caregiver survey.

ENID, OK - In partnership with Title Sponsor Edward Jones Enid Advisors and Main Street Enid, YWCA Enid is hosting their annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes on First Friday, May 5th at 6:30 pm on the Courthouse Lawn. This awareness event is a fundraiser that supports the YWCA’s life-saving programs for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, including free sexual assault forensic exams, emergency shelter, and counseling.

The purpose of this event is the old adage that you can’t really understand what someone has been through until you’ve “walked a mile in their shoes.” YWCA is challenging the men in our community to literally take a stand against violence by walking around the Downtown Square in high heels to raise awareness of sexual assault, show unified support for survivors, and engage all in YWCA’s mission. Rates of sexual assault are rising in our area, and it is essential that we all stand together in the fight against abuse to show it is not a private problem – it is a community problem.

The YWCA has hosted this event for nearly a decade, receiving an excellent response from the community. Many men and boys have supported this event over the years, including law enforcement, first responders, military personnel, youth athletic teams, businessmen, and community members.

YWCA Enid needs continued community support of this event in 2023. It will be held on the Courthouse Lawn during First Friday, May 5th. Day-of registration, shoe fittings, and check-in will be available starting at 6:00 pm at the Downtown Gazebo. The awareness walk will begin at 6:30 pm, after brief remarks and an exciting announcement by Courtney Dennis, YWCA Executive Director.

After venturing around the inner sidewalk of the Garfield County Courthouse, an Awards Ceremony will conclude the event. Awards include “Best Strut,” “Best Legs,” and “Mr. Walk A Mile.” Walkers are encouraged to make signs to carry during the walk and dress creatively. A silent auction with desserts donated by local businesses and individuals will also be featured at this year’s event.

Registration is open at ywcaenid.com or the YWCA Front Desk. Men ages 18 and up are $50, and a team of eight men can register at a discount for $350. Men’s sized heels are provided by the YWCA to all adult walkers at check-in. Heels are not mandatory – we encourage all men to stand up against violence and participate in this lighthearted event for a serious cause.
Youth of all ages are also encouraged to participate. Youth ages 2-17 are $20, and a team of unlimited youth members can register for $150. Heels are not available in youth sizes, so YWCA asks these walkers to wear their school colors or team uniforms.

Sponsorships are available to help with the fundraising of this event. Please contact the YWCA at 580-234-7581 or ywca@ywcaenid.com for more information.

Sexual assault can happen to anyone. One in three women and one in six men will experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime. The ultimate goal is to stop interpersonal violence before it begins and raising awareness helps to encourage prevention. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a strong catalyst in the awareness process by publicly engaging all in the YWCA’s mission and showing unified support for survivors.

If you, or someone you know, is experiencing sexual assault or domestic violence, please contact the YWCA on their 24-Hour Crisis Hotline at 580-234-7644 to be connected with an advocate today. You are not alone, and the YWCA is here to help. Hope starts here at the YWCA.

Since 2007 Park Avenue Thrift has contributed nearly $3 million to community nonprofits and schools, including Loaves & Fishes, Enid Symphony, Enid and Chisholm Public Schools through DonorsChoose.org, Chautauqua, Gaslight, Leonardo’s Discovery Warehouse, Lead Guitar and other organizations that improve quality of life.

The store employs 30 people and gives local residents an easy way to share items they no longer need so they can be used by others, while funding important Enid programs.

Items can be dropped off in the back of the building. Employees are on hand to even unload your vehicle. Drop off days ar Monday – Saturday. If it’s too much for your trunk, call them to pick it up from an Enid location. 233-PARK (7275).

Having a garage sale? Park Avenue can help! They have clothing racks that can be reserved for your sale. Call ahead to schedule your sale, pick-up the racks. The only stipulation is they pick up the racks and the leftovers at the same time at the end of your sale.

They even accept cars, boats, and motor homes! Items they do not accept include items beyond resealable condition, pianos, organs and TVs (unless it’s a functional flat screen).

“Besides being an excellent shopping opportunity, Park Avenue Thrift contributes substantially to Enid’s economy through sales tax, payroll, utilities and grants,” says Bert Mackie, community leader and longtime Park Avenue supporter. “It’s a gem and benefits so many.”

Park Avenue Thrift gives people the chance to repurpose, reuse and recycle to fund initiatives that improve the quality of life in Enid.

ENID, OK - Kindness: the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate without expecting praise or reward.

Although being kind to one another is encouraged every day, United Way of Northwest Oklahoma, and many others in Alva, Enid, Kingfisher and Woodward, have joined forces to shine a bigger light on kindness through observing Kindness Day in Northwest Oklahoma on Friday, Nov. 18. The international observance of World Kindness Day is Nov. 13.

This special day was introduced in 1998 to promote kindness throughout the world. It is observed in many countries including Australia, Canada, India, Italy, Japan, Nigeria, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.

“The United Way of Northwest Oklahoma has been observing this day to promote planned and random acts of kindness in the area since 2014 and have been expanding the reach into northwest Oklahoma by including Kingfisher, Alva and other communities who have kind hearts and willing spirits.” said Dan Schiedel, Executive Director of United Way of Northwest Oklahoma.

Several Kingfisher and Alva community leaders and volunteers have been meeting to discuss plans for the day and welcome everyone who would like to be involved. “We have various acts of kindness happening so far from thank you notes and goodie bags to kindness messages, paying for fountain drinks for unsuspecting individuals and more,” Cindy Harris of Pioneer said.

Various groups from the NW area are planning acts of kindness throughout the day. Some of the groups are Kingfisher Public Schools, Stepping Up, Foster Feet, YMCA, NOC, The Rotary Club of Enid, NWOSA, Carver & Fowler Kids, Pioneer, Campus Cabinet food pantry, Vance Airforce Base, Kingfisher NBC Bank, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, NWOSU Art Society, NWOSU Medical Sciences Club, NOC Baseball and Softball Teams, Cheer Squad, Northwest Technology Center, Alva State Bank, Washington Elementary in Alva, girl scouts in Waynoka, Kayla’s Kindness, Kingfisher Coalition, Food Pantries and all 26 Jiffy Trip locations.

Any club, school class, group, business, etc., who would like to be involved in the Day of Kindness and wants to be added to the overall list that will be shared with the media and others of those planning acts of kindness may contact Dan Schiedel @ dan@unitedwayenid.org. Also, anyone who wishes to sponsor the Day of Kindness in Northwest Oklahoma please contact Dan Schiedel, CEO and executive director of United Way of Northwest Oklahoma, at (580) 237-0821 or dan@unitedwayenid.org.
