ENID, OK - If you were raised in Enid like I was there are many things that remind you of why it was such a great place to grow up. Enid Buzz was originally started to help remind people of the unique and quirky things that made our little hometown the best place in America.

I originally wrote this list in 2008 and have revised it and added to it over the years. It is one of the most engaged posts I've ever written about Enid and it usually sparks the most comments and additional memories. Many of the most memorable items on the list were popular in the 50's, 60's and 70's.

Being a kid in Enid, back in the day, meant you were free to ride your bike anywhere in town and you always felt safe. You could explore creeks, tunnels and parks where few adults ever wandered. As kids we remember certain things that stick in our memories forever. This list will include of few of those events, places, businesses and people.

Some of you might not remember everything on the list but I hope it brings back a few great memories. From time to time I do add and subtract from the list. I hope you enjoy rereading the list if it's been a while since you've seen it.

Used to be a guy that jogged everywhere around town. In the summer he would wear a full ski mask, no shirt and a speedo. You could usually see him running along Garriott. About half the time he was pushing his wife who sat in a wheel chair but was not unable to walk. This went on for years.

The EHS Boys swim class’ wore the same nothing in the 70s as well. When did that finally STOP?
Before there was Wal Mart or K.Mart, all the kids bought school supplies at Vaters.
Did anyone house band kids in their own homes in the 60s and 70s from other states for Tri State?
Ross Dillon, John Criner, Kip Miles and Dave Osborn spent an hour reminiscing about the popular annual event and gave us details about how it all started.

Mid-America Summerfest began in the summer of 1986 running annually for six years until it ended in 1991. Summerest was put on and organized by the Enid A.M. AMBUCS as a fundraiser and a three-day community event. It was originally conceived as a celebration to lift spirits of Northwest Oklahoma residents.

The festival promised to be top-notch entertainment for the whole family. It was a combined effort of the AMBUCS working in cooperation with other local civic clubs and the City of Enid. It took hundreds of volunteers that spent countless hours in preparation for each celebration.

Summerfest was most well known for the hot air balloons but there was a very wide variety of activities. Exhibits and displays included antiques cars, lumberjacks, antique engines & steam show, Skoal Bandit racing car, Kodak Chipmunk aerobatic plane, fireworks, arts & crafts, commercial booths, petting zoo, bands, Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats, Magicians of Taipei, comedy, food, and much, much more.

Enid Buzz will be updating this page with more photos, videos, posters, publications and stories from Summerfest. Stay tuned! We're just getting started.

ENID, OK - This is a brief history and background on my family and a home that we owned for many decades. My great-grandmother, Ethel Valentine Ash (age 14), moved from Illinois to Enid, Oklahoma in 1900 with her family during the land runs of that time. The Ash family settled on 80 acres located from the intersection of U.S. 412 and Garland Road at the west edge of Enid (Walmart and Lowes area).

Ethel rode a horse each day to the little red school house, which was Glenwood School. She had to quit school when her mother died, to stay home and take care of her two brothers who farmed the land. This prevented her from being our first generation to graduate from Enid High school.

Ethel married William A. (Bert) Erwin in 1909. They purchased 1009 W. Randolph sometime not long after. Over the years we always called it Ten-O-Nine. Their daughter, my grandma, was born there, on the second floor, in 1913. She was the last person to own the house until it was sold along with the other homes on the block for commercial development.

The house was basically located where Taco Mayo is today. The entire block was filled with large two story homes when I was a kid.

Vintage Enid Photo

The photo above is a picture of my grandma, Elizabeth Scaling, in a wagon being pulled by a goat. The photo was taken in front of Ten-O-Nine around 1916-1917. The house next door (in the background) really changed over the years while old Ten-O-Nine stayed much the same.

1009 W. Randolph, Enid

Here is an early photo of 3 young girls in front of Ten-O-Nine. We are not sure who the girls are but most likely neighbors. Notice the lot next door and the big house in the background. The house in the background would have been on the southwest corner of Van Buren and Randolph. My best guess is that this was in the 1920's.

1009 W. Randolph, Enid

This photo is a better shot than the one above it. Again this is 1009 W. Randolph looking east. The street between the two story houses was Van Buren when it was nothing more than another 2 lane street named after a president. The house in the background closest to Ten-O-Nine eventually was torn down and became the south bound lane of Van Buren. There is a lady in a mink coat walking a dog in the background. Best guess is that this photo was taken right around 1920. This is Elizabeth Erwin Scaling at about age 7-8.

1009 W. Randolph, Enid

Yet another photo in front of Ten-O-Nine looking east toward Van Buren and downtown. Again this is Elizabeth Erwin Scaling in the mid to late 192o's. Notice the two story behind her head. That is the home that faced east looking down Randolph towards downtown. That was where James and Randolph split. Once Van Buren was widened that house lost almost all of its front yard.

1009 W. Randolph, Enid

We discovered this photo of Ten-O-Nine with a big tree in front and a new house next door. Our best guess on this photo is the 1940's or 1950's. The single story on the left eventually became a gas station and the house on the right had a complete remodel somewhere down the road.

Ethel Valentine Erwin

My great grandma, Ethel Erwin, owned the home before my grandma. This black and white photo shows my uncle, Richard Scaling, with my great grandma standing in front of Ten-O-Nine. The year must have been in the early 1950's.

1009 West Randolph, Enid

This photo is most likely from the late 60's or early 70's which is the way I remember the house as a kid. It seemed like a huge house and had the coolest wrap around front porch. There were stairs on the front and back of the porch so we ran around it for hours. It also had a two person swing that kept us occupied for hours.
-
There was a small gas station right next door to the east which rented U-Hauls. I remember playing in the front yard at night running and hiding from cars. I always wondered why the cars only seemed to come from one direction, as a kid I hadn't learned about one way streets.

1009 W. Randolph, Enid

This is an additional 1980's photo of Ten-O-Nine. The lot from which the picture was taken is the area between Randolph and James. All of these homes had been torn down for commercial development.

Scaling House

The last photo shows Ten-O-Nine in it's later years. This was late 70's or early 80's. All of the houses in the area were being bought up for a rumored development along Randolph and James. My grandma had moved into another home and held out selling Ten-O-Nine as long as she could. It wasn't long after this photo that the old place was torn down.

If you notice the garage in the background you can see it was painted half and half. From the time they were built, Ten-O-Nine and the house next door shared one driveway and each owned half of the garage. Talk about a parking nightmare!

Today, this is the parking lot and location of Taco Mayo. My grandma's house sat almost exactly where the restaurant is and it always brings back great memories when I eat there.

Interesting fact: If you look back through the photos you'll see a Gremlin and a Pacer parked at the house. My uncle may have been the only person to have owned both cars!!

ENID, OK - Enid Public Schools is proud to announce a new inductee to the Enid Public School Foundation (EPSF) Hall of Fame, long-time employee and public education advocate, Ron Garrison.

The induction will take place during halftime at Enid High School’s first home football game at D. Bruce Selby stadium on September 3.

Garrison is this year’s honoree due to his continued contributions to public education and his decades-long commitment to EPS. The ceremony will honor him as a community member who has made tremendous impact in the lives of EPS students throughout the years.

Garrison, a 1967 EHS graduate, began his career with EPS as a teacher and coach at EHS and later went on to be the head principal of EHS. He has been the Director of Property Services for the district since 1997 and his total years with the district spans five decades. Garrison is the only EHS graduate to serve as a principal of EHS to date.

“I appreciate this honor very much from the Enid Public School Foundation and the Enid Public School administration,” said Garrison. “Going to work every morning for 50 years to Enid Public Schools has never been a job. It has been a passion that I have had - for an institution that has provided me with an outstanding education and a work experience that has allowed me to positively contribute, work, and serve the Enid Public Schools students and staff throughout my career. Thank you!”

Janna Jackson, director of EPSF, said she is excited to be involved in another Hall of Fame recognition.

“We are proud to include Ron Garrison in the EPSF Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding work”, said Jackson. “He has had an enormous influence on students and teachers during his tenure and continues to be a strong leader for public education.”

EPSF is a non-profit organization, operated by a volunteer Board of Trustees, which supports EPS. They awarded $128,000 during the 2020-21 school year to EPS classrooms, teachers and students through various programs. EPSF has been sponsoring the Hall of Fame since 2001 as a way to honor EHS graduates and those who contribute greatly to the community and schools of Enid.

The Hall of Fame is displayed inside EHS on the second floor where students and visitors can read about all inductee’s lives and accomplishments.

ENID, OK - Enid's newest downtown eatery will officially open on Monday, April 19 at 11:00am. Cherokee Ranch Land & Cattle Company has weathered setbacks and a year of COVID-19 but they are now ready to swing open the doors and welcome northwest Oklahoma residents.

This Ranch themed new concept will specialize great steaks and Oklahoma Ranch-style food! A large bar area will feature unique cocktails, beer and wine including Balcones Whiskies.

The eatery will also eventually include a large outdoor venue which will be added with Bags, Horseshoes, Seating, Stage and Live Music!

Two Enid High graduates are coming home after 34 years. Rodney and Joni Brittain left Enid upon graduation in the early 80's and went on to have careers in other states after college at OSU. The couple has been married over 28 years and had settled in Bloomington, Illinois but continued to return to Enid for visits with family and friends.

2019 became the year that Rodney Brittain took action to make their dream of returning to Enid a reality. Brittain is returning with not only a desire to be back home but also with a business plan to open a unique eatery in downtown Enid.

Brittain is bringing a background in hotel and restaurant management along with friend and business partner Stephen Leins to open Cherokee Ranch Land & Cattle Co. Leins lives out of state but has made many trips to Enid to help with the design and planning of the business. The two have been friends for over 15 years.

If you've been on Facebook at all recently you may seen photos Brittain has been posting about the progress he is making on the old warehouse at 112 E. Cherokee, directly across the street from the David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

Brittain and Leins spent 5 years tossing around the idea of going into business together. Brittain said now was the perfect time to bring this new company to Enid. "If it was 10 years earlier, we would not be doing this," he said.

The partners have 31,500 square feet of warehouse to work with and they plan on having something unique in every square inch of the space. The vision is to create a fun, family western eatery with affordable meals. Brittain said, "We want to create something the community will be proud of."

Cherokee Ranch Land & Cattle Co. will seat around 200 people when completely full. The eatery is made up of a large main dining area, a vintage bar and an additional section to the west side of the building.

The main features of the restaurant are the wooden floors and grand overhead wooden rafters. Barn doors will be used on the front of the warehouse and saloon-style swing doors will be used inside to add to the western flair. Brittain purchased a 1890's New York Tavern Bar in Connecticut. He had the entire bar shipped to Oklahoma.

Not only has Brittain brought in a stunning, old-fashioned bar but he has acquired a vintage wooden wagon. An original Bull Durham Tobacco advertisement can still be seen on the large west brick wall. Brittain has been painstakingly trying to preserve the design and any other original touches he can.

A recent addition to the restaurant has been a new wall created to look like the porch of a cabin. Reclaimed wood has been used in the process bringing even more of a rustic feel to the space.

There are many more touches waiting to be added but Brittain does not want to completely spoil the surprise. He wants patrons to experience something they've never seen when they first walk into the restaurant.

Enid residents should expect to find great food, live entertainment and a fun atmosphere. Brittain hopes to have a buffet brunch and Bloody Mary bar once opened. There will be space for board meetings, private lunches and dinners of up to 20 people. They will also eventually have a banquet room that will accommodate up to 180.

Menu highlights include Spinach Artichoke Dip, Teriyaki Kebabs, BBQ Pork Tapas, Mediterranean Plate, Grilled Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap, The South Western Burger, Oven Roasted Portabella Wrap, Bacon Cheeseburger, Firecracker Chicken Wrap, Pan-Fried Mahi Mahi Reuben, Pork Tenderloin, The Original Fish Sandwich, Chicken Fried Steak, Grilled Ribeye, Grilled Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo, Mesquite Beef Tenderloin, Crab-Stuffed Portabella, Coconut Lobster and much more!

The restaurant will feature Creekstone Farms steaks served with chef's potatoes and vegetables. Other features include Chicken Kiev, Cajun Chicken Alfredo, Chicken Parmesan, Braised Bone-In Pork Chop, Peppercorn Salmon, Crab-Stuffed Shrimp, Fried Catfish w/ Fries, Chopped Sirloin, Pasta Primavera, Tortellini Alfredo, Baked French Onion Soup plus many others.

Desserts will include Fried Biscuits with Apple Butter, Strawberry Devonshire, Apple Pie Ala Mode and Original Creme Brule.

Go to their Facebook page to keep up-to-date on other news and specials. You can also get more details about the business on their website.

Hours will be 11:00am - 10:00pm Mon. thru Thurs. and 11:00am - 11:00pm Fri. - Sat. Sundays from 10:00am - 2:00pm they will serve family style meals and include a Bloody Mary Bar.

Patrons will be able to park right up front and in the parking lot located east of the restaurant at the end of the block.
Grasping Fingers: A Rivikin Novella is available now on Amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085QFCZP5) for Kindle devices and the Kindle app.
Katheryn Hazlett was born and raised in Enid, Oklahoma. She graduated Enid High School in 2008 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Tulsa in 2012 before moving to the United Kingdom in 2014 to earn a master’s degree in medieval history at Aberystwyth University in Wales.

ENID, OK - The 71st Grand National Roadster Show took place this weekend in Pomona, California. Seven Pomona Fairplex buildings were filled with hot rods, muscle cars, low riders, classic trucks, motorcycles, vendors, and other special displays. Harold's Hot Rod Shop from Enid, Oklahoma is becoming a well known name at the national event.
-
When most people think about award winning hot rods they usually think about car builders from California they've seen on TV. Reality TV shows now document the process of turning old rusty pieces of metal into a restored classic automobiles. What many people may not know is that Harold Clay, owner of Harold's Hot Rods, and his crew have brought home trophies from shows in 2019 and 2020.
-
Clay owns one of those local companies that we rarely hear about. They are making waves on a national stage but don't make the spotlight locally. Harold's Hot Rods have been featured in many of the top magazines and on several national hot rod TV shows.
-
Clay's 1957 Chevy build was documented in Hot Rod Magazine in 2017. Another article was written in 2017 in Street Muscle Magazine about a 1936 Ford Cabriolet restoration. And recently he was featured in Automotive American talking about a 1961 Ford Econoline Shop Truck.
-
Harold's Hot Rod Shop won first place Full Sports at the Grand National Roadster Show in 2019. Clay had restored a 1961 Corvette convertible ten years earlier. The car is owned by John and Peggy Bartholomew of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Corvette was found minus engine and transmission, with nothing left under its hood but traces of a disastrous fire. Read the build article at SuperChevy.com.
-
Harold Clay, Josh Billings and Richard Crump were all back in California for the 2020 Grand National Roadster Show. They all won trophies for the work done by Harold's Hot Rods in Enid.
-
They entered a 1970 Jaguar owned by Richard Crump of Enid. Crump did final assembly with all paint and body work being done by Clay and Billings. The red Jaguar placed 1st at the show.
-
They also took with them a 1961 blue Chevy Impala which placed 2nd at the show. Vehicles at the event were judged by a team of professional judges using a point system based on detail, quality, condition, safety and originality.
-
Clay has been doing quality work on cars and trucks since 1979 when he first opened the doors to Clay’s Collision Center in Enid. Over forty years later Clay no longer works day-today in the collision center but spends most of his time in the very back of the business.
-
Harold's Hot Rod Shop has about 8,500 square-foot of space that allows Clay to build his high-end hot rods. The shop is located at 1211 W. Spruce. Call 580-233-8720 with questions about custom builds.

ENID, OK - Enid is quickly becoming the home to many new public art pieces and artistic murals. Residents can spot several new murals going up on the outside walls of different businesses around town. There are also sculptures being erected around the downtown area.
-
One mural you may not have seen is hidden inside of Hope Outreach Thrift Store on S. Van Buren. The art can be seen on the north wall as you enter the main doors. It depicts the head of an American bald eagle, an Oklahoma landscape and the hands of four people from different ethnic groups.
-
Tox Murillo is the mural artist and people around the thrift store call him Chuy. Murillo's uncle invited him to live in Enid after spending time in Los Angeles and Mexico. Since being in Enid he has decided it's a great place to stay and raise a family.
-
Murillo says he gets his talent from simply practicing his art from. He started out doing graffiti and honing his skills with a spray can. While in L.A. and Mexico he sold his art on canvas's to make money. He mainly uses spray cans or airbrush as his tools and has created many unique designs for cars and motorcycles.
-
In Enid, Murillo has not had the time or the fan base to sell much canvas art. He says he does paint almost daily just to keep his skills sharp. On this particular mural he is using an airbrush because of the confinement of being indoors.
-
The design is meant to show unity and how different cultures can join together to make one great nation. The eagle depicts the United States and the landscape shows off northwest Oklahoma. Murillo has not named the mural as of yet but the theme is about being unified and working together.
-
These days Murillo is busy working and raising a family but he is open to creating custom art pieces for people. He said he would like to make a full time living with his art one day but enjoys the time off every now and then.
-
Drop by his Facebook Page or Instagram account and see more of his art. Murillo is fantastic with faces and putting detail into his designs.
-
Stop by and see the design inside Hope Outreach located at 215 S. Van Buren.
Five years ago, Mr. Allen walked through the doors of Monroe Elementary with great hopes of transforming a school that was in need of support. Test scores were low and attendance was poor. His plans included strategies for serving a growing population of English language learners as well as providing support to students and families struggling in poverty, abuse, and trauma.
-
"Elementary schools are short on positive male role models. I closely watch the strength of character he exhibits while working with challenging students and situations," said Conrady. "On any given day, Mr. Allen makes hard, important decisions that can impact the lives of students and families in our community. His previous experience as a middle school teacher and coach serve him well."
-
Randy Rader, EPS Assistant Superintendent, said Allen’s contributions to Monroe go beyond the school day and makes a difference for students, staff, and parents.
-
“We are honored to have Mr. Allen as part of our leadership in the district and cannot think of anyone more worthy of this nomination,” said Rader. “EPS is fortunate to have a wonderful male role model for our youngest learners at Monroe.”
-
Allen is in his sixth year as principal at Monroe Elementary. He has been instrumental in bringing a new environment to the school, beginning each day with encouraging chants with students and staff.
-
“I am honored to be nominated for LifeChanger of the Year and I am thrilled to share it with my amazing Monroe family,” said Allen.
-
Candidates for LifeChanger of the Year must meet the following criteria to be nominated: a proven ability to make a beneficial difference in the lives of students; the ability to positively add to the development of a school’s atmosphere; leadership within his/her school; a record of excellent performance at the professional level; commitment to producing a nurturing atmosphere; adherence to high moral and ethical standards.
-
LifeChanger of the Year is sponsored and run by National Life Group and the National Life Group Foundation. Since its inception in 2006, the goal of the National Life Group Foundation is to do good in the communities in which we live and work by supporting nonprofit and educational organizations.

ENID, OK - The arrival of Fall always reminds of the good times my friends and I had preparing for the oncoming Halloween season in Enid, Oklahoma. The street that we lived along in the late 70's was a very wide avenue lined with older two story houses and bungalow's. Along every block there were very large elm and maple trees that would cast great shadows over the bumpy sidewalks running along either side.
-
Fall was the kickoff of our big adventure. The air became cooler and the leaves on the huge trees in the front yards began to turn and fall. The days began to get shorter and the sun would go down earlier and earlier every evening.
-
Our big adventure was building a haunted cardboard maze inside my best friends old, multi-room garage. His dad would relinquish the dusty garage around this time each year and leave his cars parked in the driveway. We would have full reign over the entire space.
-
The haunted maze would become our after school and weekend obsession for over a solid month. We'd spend hours in the garage sometimes completely losing track of time. We would clean out all of the rooms to make way for the large boxes.
-
The quest would begin with our carefree hunt for the biggest and best cardboard boxes in town. We were both in junior high and couldn't drive so we relied on our trusty bicycles to get us around town. You know the ones, bright colored paint, banana seats, chopper style handle bars, goofy white grips and chrome fenders. Real junior high nerd bikes straight out of the seventies!
-
My bike was multicolored with reds, oranges and blues while my best friends was mostly green. We would ride these modes of monster transportation all over town searching out appliance stores, furniture stores, dumpsters and the most coveted place of all, the funeral homes. You see, couch boxes were good, refrigerator boxes were great, but coffin boxes were the pièce de résistance of our haunted maze.
-
There was one slight problem when finding these magnificent boxes. Getting them back to the garage on our bikes became a small adventure in itself. To this day I wish there was a photo of us lugging a coffin box, balanced between our two bikes, down the street.
-
With most boxes, we could unstaple them and fold them up like pancakes. We would stick as many as we could under one arm and pedal like heck while steering with the other arm. I remember dropping boxes along the way and having to make several stops just to rest and get a new grip.
-
Coffin boxes were virtually impossible to tear apart and fold like a pancake but we sure weren't going to have a haunted maze without at least one genuine cardboard coffin box. A box that large usually created an entire room inside our maze. It was something we had to have.
-
This ritual of box hunting would begin in late September and continue well into October. The ground would be covered with dry, crunchy leaves in different hues of red, orange, brown and yellow. The air would be cooler and the skies would become a little grayer.
-
With the garage our own, we would shut the doors, flip on the heater and start creating our masterpiece. There are many songs, that to this day, will immediately take me back to those carefree times. I can hear them now, Thelma Houston, belting out "Don't Leave Me This Way" and Rita Coolidge singing, "(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher."
-
Creating the maze was the second part of the adventure. We spent hours piecing boxes together just so they would create the perfect turn, dead end or straight away. Our only tools were box cutters and duct tape. With the radio blaring we would work day and night creating holes in the boxes for hand grabbing, dangle things from the top and scatter slimy things all along the floor.
-
The garage that we used for the haunted maze was divided into four sections. The first area was the entry where we'd let the uneasy children stand and listen to the screams of others. This room was filled with things on the walls, a black light and one of friends hidden in an area where the dogs slept.
-
The parking area of the garage had most of the maze in it. It was large enough that the maze could wind back and forth with an actual dead end every now and then. We had scary music playing throughout and we were all sticking our hands in one hole or another.
-
That large room led into a smaller room which was my area. The kids would still be trapped in the maze as they entered my area. I would have a spot with a false wall that I could remove and grab whoever I wanted. It was so much fun hearing the kids scream. After my room there was another small room that would allow the kids to finally stand up again.
-
The last room had a door that opened into the backyard. As the kids would exit the maze and think their horror was over, we'd have a scary character come out of nowhere and chase them all way back to the front of the garage. It was the perfect setup for a haunted maze inside a scary looking garage.
-
It seems like we would even take the opportunity to spend the night in the maze on a weekend or two. All of this preparation would continue up until the very day of Halloween itself. Of course we would have our friends over to do a run through before we would allow any stranger to enter our maze of horror. Many days were spent just hanging out and talking in the big, coffin box rooms.
-
On some occasions one of us would end up working on the maze alone. Those times were few and far between. Not only because we were always together but every now and then you'd catch a noise you couldn't explain and that old garage would get just a little bit scarier.
-
Outside preparation included raking leaves into large piles that looked like graves. We even created cardboard tombstones for the head of each pile. We also had a few random plastic body parts that we'd half bury in the leaves. It was always a pretty cool looking graveyard.
-
Once Halloween was upon us we would go out onto the cold cracked sidewalk, in costume, and lure the neighborhood kids down the long dark driveway to the old tattered garage. Each kid, brave enough, would then enter the maze and crawl for his life to the end. There was no escape once you entered and most kids left running and screaming out the exit.
-
As the kids would crawl through the maze we would run to our designated locations and setup to scare them. We had special boxes that only we could get to and they had the holes cut in them. We'd reach out for the trick-or-treaters and dangle things in front of them. In some spots we'd bang the box or shout really loud. It was all about giving the kids the unexpected.
-
We would laugh so hard that we would make ourselves cry. Seeing the scared little rug rats running for their lives was all we needed to see to know that we had accomplished what we had set out to do. We were the best of friends and we enjoyed creating things together that entertained others. Those memories I'll never forget and I can only hope that every kid finds his own great cardboard box adventure.
-
I may be expanding on this story and turning it into a full short story so stay tuned.
ENID, OK - UPDATE: 09/25/2019 - The deadline extension request for "Under Her Wing was the Universe" passed city commission Tuesday night with a vote of 5-1. About 30 people attended the city council meeting in support of the project. The new extension runs through July 1, 2020.
-
Artist Romy Owens, an Enid native, conceived the downtown public art project that is located in the green space south of the Stride Bank Center. The site plan was originally submitted to the City of Enid in June 2017. Owens described the project as, "A gathering place that is unique and distinctive that puts Enid on the map."
-
This is an artist-led project, which means the artist initiated this idea and must secure the funding through individual donations and grants available to individual artists. Owens begun fundraising for the project and had asked for funding from the City Commission through PACE. The tentative budget for the project was one hundred thousand ($100,000.00) dollars. An additional $200,000 is being raised by in kind donations. She has received private donations from a Go Fund Me account and a five thousand dollar ($5,000.00) grant from the Enid Arts Council.
-
The epic public art piece in downtown Enid is titled "Under Her Wing was the Universe." Inside the art piece, visitors will experience a micro-universe of lights. Imagine stepping under the shelter of a bird's wing and seeing the universe. They imagine this becoming the kind of destination where memorable moments could happen: a first kiss, a proposal, teenage daydreaming, or a picnic with friends.
-
"Under Her Wing was the Universe" was inspired by Owen's relationship with her mom. Her mom inspired her to dream and imagine unlimited possibilities. Hopefully, everyone has had a person like that in our lives. With this artwork, imagine stepping under the shelter of a bird’s wing and seeing an universe within it. Inside this large sculpture, visitors will find a sanctuary-like setting with a light installation above that presents a artist-interpreted universe of stars overhead.
-
Individual residents can help support this project. By giving at any level, you would be contributing to the production of art that will transform our community. This is an architectural-scale work of art. Funds will be used to buy materials, rent equipment, run electricity, and cover travel expenses, signage production, installation insurance, artist fees, and landscaping costs.
-
This work of contemporary art would become a significant destination for Enid residents and visitors alike. Learn more and donate at their Go Fund Me account. If you prefer to pay by check and bypass processing fees, you can mail that directly to Owens. Email her at (theromyowens @ gmail . com) for her mailing address. Your check will be logged as an offline donation and still count towards their goal.

ENID, OK - Fox Business Network Launched its First Reality Show "Strange Inheritance," with Host Jamie Colby. Colby trekked across the heartland of America in search of stories about the rare and sometimes bizarre inheritances that get handed down from one generation to the next. The Enid episode aired on Monday, February 9, 2015.
-
After eight months of filming the show has created 26 stories for the new series. Colby had to leave her co-anchor position on Fox Business Network's "America's News Headquarters" to film the series. The shows report on real life situations and are not scripted or staged.
-
The show offers a more personal touch to the business of antiques and collectors' items on TV than similar shows such as PBS's "Antiques Roadshow" or History Channel's "American Pickers."
-
For the first season, families across 25 states shared stories of their relatives inheritance including the Jordan family from Enid, Oklahoma. Colby came to Enid for the story and filmed parts of the show at the auction and also filmed some scenes in the storage garage of Brad Waken, who is also an avid car collector.
-
Other destinations during the series include Ocean City, MD, Nashville, TN, Portalas, NM, and Miles City, MT.
-
"Strange Inheritance" focuses on the entire story of inheritance, including the struggle families face in dealing with contested wills, tax burdens and other government or corporation related issues.
-
Fox Business Network airs episodes of "Strange Inheritance" each week Monday through Thursday at 8pm CST, with two new episodes debuting back-to-back each Monday and Tuesday.

The Jordan Vintage Car Collection

-
Oliver Jordan is remembered as one tough “Okie”. In 1946, Jordan purchased an existing salvage yard in the town of Enid, Oklahoma that had been in business since the 1920's. He bought and sold parts out of the yard until the City of Enid told Jordan he would have to make changes to his business for zoning reasons. Rather than conform to the City, Jordan shut the doors to the yard in 1953.
-
This didn't stop Jordan from buying cars and expanding his collection. After decades of collecting, the property was covered with hundreds of vintage vehicles from the early 1900's to the 1950’s. Over the years Jordan became known as the “man with all the cars”. Jordan always refused to sell any of his collection and kept his privacy.
-
Jordan shared his life and cars with his wife Ruby. In 2001, after Ruby fell from a ladder, a grandson came to to help out the family. He worked with his grandparents to help prepare them for their later years. He moved cars, inventoried them, and built a building to protect some of more valuable cars. Many of the original buildings were in disrepair and had started to fall on the cars. One of those cars was Jordan's 1936 Cord, among others.
-
Oliver Jordan died in 2004 and left his wife Ruby with the entire collection and parts. The family worked together to try and sell the collection as a whole. There were many visits from several famous people, but there was never a final deal. After Ruby passed away, the family made the decision to offer the amazing collection at auction to the highest bidders.

THE AUCTION

-
VanDerBrink Auctions, LLC offered the amazing collection of approximately 250 vintage cars that ranged in age from the teens to some from the 1950’s. The majority of the collection was from the 1930’s and 1940’s. There were many rare cars in the collection including a 1936 Cord, 1937 Cord, one supercharged, and 1939 all aluminum Lincoln 7 passenger Sedan. There were hundreds of cars and bodies that were purchased for custom rod, restorations, and parts. The collection was not only limited to vehicles, but also hundreds of collector parts primarily from the 1930’s and 1940’s.
-
The Auction was held at the Jordan home in Enid, Oklahoma on June 7th, 2014. It had rained earlier in the week and the entire property was covered in mud. There were huge crowds throughout the day causing many people to have to park a mile away. I personally spotted several film crews capturing the auction.
-
I hung out at the auction and took advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity with my camera. I took several hundreds of photos of the cars, parts and the crowd. See just a few pics below...
Interview Date: 1/30/06.
Interviewer: Glen McIntire
Subject: THE ENID DOWNTOWN SQUARE FROM MAXINE AUSTIN'S VIEW AS A CHILD
Length of Video: 48 minutes
. Written Summary: Andi Holland
-
The Downtown Square was a big part of my childhood. Dad bought a drug store and mom did the bookkeeping. What I share are a child’s memories. There was no such thing as a babysitter so I was at the drugstore a lot. A child is not impressed by offices so some of them along the square I don’t recall. A child is impressed by stores to look in during the 1920s. We were living in Marshall and the ladies would come to Enid to shop. They would agree to meet at a certain time at the Lattice House in the northeast corner of the square across the street from dad’s drugstore. It was a pleasant place to wait. There was no air conditioning so it was cool and there were roses growing around the outside.
-
Where Bell’s Jewelry is now is where dad’s drugstore was. From Bell’s going south next to the drug store was a five-story building. Years later two or three of the stories were removed. Next to that was a shoeshine parlor. Kennedy’s department store was a big mercantile with ready to wear, piece goods, shoes, it was a women’s store. Next to that was a very nice men’s store Meibergen and Godschalks. Next was Hershberg’s. It was smaller than Kennedy’s. Mr. Hershberg was a colorful character. He stood just inside the store and asked customers if they were treated well as they left. I thought I was more sophisticated than to answer him, but I couldn’t beat him. Piece goods is fabric sold by the yard. Next was the Evans drug store and next was Central National Bank. It was a five story building on the corner of east Broadway and Grand. Dad had another drug store the Sanford-Kendrick drug store. Above the drug store was a dance hall. Next we are getting to the part of the square I wasn’t supposed to be at. In high school that was the place to be. Next was the Enid Restaurant and Supply and a movie house. I wasn’t allowed to go there because they had rats that crawled around. Lots of children couldn’t go there. Crossing the street to the southeast corner of Maine and Grand was a horse trough and Gensmen’s Hardware. Doc McKay’s drugstore came later. There were some other offices and such that I didn’t visit. South side of square going west at corner of west Maine and Independence was Kress. Coming back just to the east of Kress was the Boston Fruit Store. I didn’t get to eat there because daddy’s drug store served lunch.
-
No Dairy Queen. No fast food. All the drugstores had fountains and served lunch. They offered curb service. Dr. Bruce Henson was a curb hop as a young man. People would come honk and so there were curb hops to take their orders. Enid Paint & Wallpaper was along there and was pretty to look at. One of those buildings was William Cromwell’s Printing Company. Crossing Independence there was a hamburger stand. Crossing Maine going north on the west side was the Johnson Furniture Company. Later that was Anthony’s. Next was Chenoweth and Green Music store. Daddy had another drugstore, Sanford Stone. Going north past Broadway was the Oklahoma State Bank. Fred Champlin ran the bank. It had a diagonal entrance. Later it was the American National Bank. The drug store was were the Security National Bank is. The last drug store dad owned. There were six drug stores around the square; Evans, Corry’s, Sour Beer. Then there was Kline’s ladies store. Olympic Candy store had homemade candy. They were perhaps of Greek ancestry. Occasionally mother and I would go to the movie then stop and get some candy. The Royal Theatre was the main movie theatre. Corry’s drugstore on Randolph was famous because they sold victrolas and Vic directors in the back. Quite a drawing place for the younger crowd. It was where Holden’s is now. Enid National Bank was one of the tall buildings. It was completely destroyed and rebuilt. A very pompous building. You had to climb several steps to the door. There were elevators to the upper floors. On one of the upper floors was the General Clinic. It later moved and became Bass Integris. There were many doctors there; F. A. Hudson, Harry Hudson, Dr. Fred Hudson, Dr. McElvoy, Dr. Kebbler. Mother sprang her ankle once and daddy had taken her to the clinic. As he was carrying her down the steps of the building he fell with her. The steps were very hazardous.
-
Going east on Randolph was the Sour Beer drugstore. Next was the Enid Dine Café, actually a cafeteria. I loved the cafeteria! Monaker Photograph Studio and on the second floor was the Nettler Sisters shop. They did custom pleating, knitting, crochet work. I had an accordion pleated skirt. Going east was a men’s store, Batterton and Tagge, Dr. Tagge’s father. Lowenhaupt’s ready to wear was next. It had a men’s side and a women’s side. That is where my parents bought me my first fur coat when I was going to college. Woolworth’s came later in my childhood. After graduation I married and moved to Chickasha. In very early childhood we lived in Marshall. Wolf’s men’s store was L shaped. The men’s department entrance was on Randolph. The Women’s entrance was on north Grand. Mother bought clothes and hats there. Montgomery Wards was there later. Originally Garfield State Bank was on the corner. Garfield State Bank went into bankruptcy during the Depression. On the east side of north Grand was the Enid Business College. An important and helpful place. When our children were in high school we had them take typing there. I wish my parents had. Across the street to daddy’s drug store. At that time Broadway was not a through street. Streetcars ran around the square. The fare was 5 cents. The streetcars went to Phillips University through the square west to Tyler then 2 blocks south to Oklahoma and west to where the Oklahoma Floral Company is. There was a turn around there. In that part of town was the Geronimo Automobile Plant.
-
Back to the square – The center of the square was the Courthouse that burned. It was three or four stories and quite an elaborate and imposing building. The post office was where the library is now. After the Courthouse burned there was considerable discussion about Broadway becoming a through street. You might say it was a burning issue! The square was actually a rectangle. There were gardens in the square. A pleasant, hospitable gesture and made Enid a pleasant place to shop. The Oxford Hotel was one block north of the square on Grand and Maple and served meals on Sunday. It was the big place on Sunday. The drugstores served meals at noon and maybe sandwiches in the evening.
-
Back to dad’s drug store – in 1918 my parents moved from Marshall and opened the drugstore. It had a lunch counter and sold prescriptions featuring professional pharmacists. My dad was a professional pharmacist and an officer in the National Federation of Retail Druggists. He received that award much later. Daddy’s policy was to hire people to do every job the store required including his registered pharmacists. The people who worked the lunch counter gave him distress. They were not reliable and not well educated, but the counter brought in a lot of traffic. In the store there were cosmetics, the fountain and prescriptions. There was no mall, all the mercantile businesses were around the square. The Saturday night activity was to get a good parking place by one of the drug stores and window shop then come back and honk for curb service and have some refreshment.
-
The chocolate ice cream sodas were something. Daddy was very particular about that. They were excellent! Ice cream, chocolate then more ice cream and chocolate then the carbonated water. It was a different world. Quite remarkable that in 1923 only 30 years from the opening, the buildings were made of good material, good architecture and style and a lot had been accomplished in those 30 years. In 1927 the Convention Hall was built. Mrs. John Curran grew up in Boston. She tried to bring good things to Enid. We had good things too, Mary Gardener, the Opera star, Mrs. Zemabol the stage star, Sir Harry Lauder, the Scottish entertainer, Galla Kurshee, the metropolitan concerto. We had good things thanks to her.
End of tape
