Organized by Dr. Jerry Gustafson, professor of business, the two-day seminar is designed for anyone interested in entrepreneurship, marketing and professional development.

The seminar encourages participants to consider the role of entrepreneurs in a free society and to learn about entrepreneurs' attributes and motivations for developing innovations and taking risks in their businesses. Attendees will hear from several business leaders sharing real-world insights from their professional experiences.

Student Enrollment & Course Credit

To receive college credit, students must enroll in GBUS 4423 and must attend in person at the Enid campus. The course is required for entrepreneurship minors, may count toward upper-level elective requirements for business majors, and may provide additional hours applicable toward the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Exam for accounting majors. The course may also be taken twice for a maximum of six credit hours. Students not planning to enroll may attend for free at any location.

Project Thunderbird, a proposed data center and power corridor infrastructure initiative in Enid, will host a Community Open House to give Enid residents an opportunity to learn more about the project, speak directly with the project team and ask questions about the proposal.

The come-and-go event will feature informational booths focused on water, energy, economic and community benefits, Vance Air Force Base, Data Centers 101 and other key topics related to the proposed project. Members of the Project Thunderbird team will be available throughout the evening to answer questions and hear feedback from residents.

There will be no formal presentation, allowing attendees to visit anytime during the two hour event and have one-on-one conversations with the project team.

Plainsmen Holdings, LLC, a partnership comprised of Enid natives Jason Singer, Aaron Singer, Chad Dillingham and Troy Phillips, announced plans to develop Project Thunderbird, a data center and power corridor infrastructure initiative designed to support long-term economic growth and technological investment in Enid and Garfield County.

Working closely with city leaders and economic development partners, Plainsmen Holdings is developing Project Thunderbird to create lasting benefits for the Enid community through infrastructure investment, future-focused economic growth and a stronger local tax base. Once completed, the project is expected to generate tens of millions of dollars annually in new revenue for Enid schools, city services and community priorities for decades to come — without increasing taxes, electricity rates or water bills for residents.

"The Enid Regional Development Alliance (ERDA) works every day to attract innovative ideas, new investment and opportunities to strengthen Enid's economy and position our community for long-term success," said Dr. Marcie Mack, ERDA executive director. "The City of Enid has wisely invested in strategic infrastructure to attract transformational projects, and Project Thunderbird represents the type of forward-looking opportunity that can create lasting benefits for our community.”

The proposed Project Thunderbird development encompasses approximately 1,735 acres across four campuses in Enid and includes plans for an on-site power generation facility of up to 3.3 gigawatts enabled through a partnership with a major natural gas midstream energy provider.

If constructed as envisioned, the facility would generate electricity on-site to serve the campus without any strain on the regional electric grid. The project would represent one of the largest privately developed energy facilities in Oklahoma, providing long-term energy reliability while helping reduce demand on existing grid infrastructure.

The project’s corresponding infrastructure initiative, the Patriot Utility District, will support Vance Air Force Base with backup energy needs through hardened power and fiber infrastructure, strengthening operational reliability. Together, the initiatives are designed to drive economic growth while strengthening one of the community's most important assets.

“Vance Air Force Base and the Enid community have always been closely connected,” said Chad Dillingham, co-managing partner of Plainsmen Holdings. “Project Thunderbird will support the long-term future of both by investing in infrastructure that benefits the base as well as the families, businesses and community that depend on it.”

Dillingham said secure, U.S.-based data centers are becoming increasingly important to national security as Americans rely on digital infrastructure for banking, healthcare, communications, commerce and countless other aspects of daily life. He noted that, much like Vance Air Force Base helps protect the nation and has long been supported by the Enid community, secure domestic data infrastructure plays a growing role in safeguarding the country's interests. Dillingham said Enid is uniquely positioned to support that mission while building on its longstanding connection to Vance Air Force Base and America's defense efforts.

“Leadership at Vance Air Force Base understands that data centers are critical to national security. Nearly every military function depends on the ability to securely store, move, process and analyze vast quantities of data at speed and scale,” said Mike Cooper, military liaison for the City of Enid and chairman of the Oklahoma Strategic Military Planning Commission. “The U.S. military views data centers and AI computing as strategic assets, and communities that support that infrastructure play an important role in our national defense.”

Plainsmen Holdings emphasized that Project Thunderbird is committed to transparency, responsible development and being a long-term community partner. The project is being designed to minimize impacts on local resources, comply with all applicable local, state and federal requirements and preserve the quality of life that makes Enid a great place to live, work and raise a family.

"Enid is demonstrating the kind of leadership that communities will need as demand for advanced infrastructure continues to grow," Dillingham said. "By creating a clear regulatory framework before development occurs, the city has ensured that future investment is guided by transparency, accountability and community priorities. We commend city leaders for taking a proactive approach that balances economic opportunity with responsible planning and helps position Enid for long-term success."

If approved, Project Thunderbird plans to use raw water from the new Kaw Lake Pipeline, a renewable water source rather than groundwater. Advanced closed-loop cooling technology will be used to significantly reduce water consumption compared to traditional data center cooling systems.

“Our roots in Enid go back for generations,” Jason Singer said. “Our families built businesses here more than a century ago, and we care deeply about this community. Project Thunderbird is an opportunity to invest in Enid’s future, strengthen its economic foundation and support the next generation while preserving the qualities that make this community special.”

Plainsmen Holdings continues to work through additional project details before announcing the full scope of the initiative. More information will be shared publicly as plans continue to evolve in the coming weeks.

The Bike Shop, a fixture in downtown Enid, has announced they will be closing the doors.

Micah and Jenniffer Stone are the second owners of the business that has been serving Enid and the surrounding area since 1974.

Micah has been with the shop since 1978. Micah and Jenniffer have owned the shop since 2000.

Their goal is the end of October and they are looking forward to retirement!

Chisholm Trail Broadcasting’s long-running AM station KCRC is celebrating 100 years on the air.

On Tuesday, KCRC received a proclamation during the Mayor and Board of Commissioners Regular Meeting in the Council Chambers of the City Administration Building.

Additionally, Enid Mayor David Mason held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday at the station.

Both the proclamation and ribbon-cutting commemorated KCRC’s century of service to the Enid community and Northwest Oklahoma.

First on air in Oklahoma City August 19, 1926, the call letters were KGCB.

The Champlin Oil Refinery Co bought the frequency and moved it to Enid in 1929 changing the call letters to KCRC.

The studios moved to the tower location in the 1960’s. 1390 was almost always a news and talk format, then sports talk.

KCRC is one of the oldest continuous St. Louis Cardinals affiliates, broadcasting baseball games back to the Dizzy Dean era.

The YMCA celebrated an exciting new chapter for the Enid community with the groundbreaking of the Winter Family Wellness Center, a new facility designed to expand opportunities for health, wellness and connection for adults, families and seniors.

YMCA leaders, board members, donors, volunteers and community partners gathered to celebrate the milestone and recognize the tremendous community support that has helped bring the vision to life. To date, more than $2.6 million has been raised from over 50 families and donors in support of the project.

YMCA CEO Greg Shamburg spoke about the growing need for additional YMCA space as participation and demand at the existing facility continue to increase. He also highlighted Enid’s growing senior population and the importance of creating welcoming, accessible opportunities that serve every generation.

YMCA Board President Mandy Holt reflected on the significance of the project and the community effort behind it.

“The Winter Family Wellness Center represents what is possible when a community comes together around a shared vision,” Holt said. “This project is an investment in the health and well being of Enid and in the generations of families who will call the YMCA their Y for years to come. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped us reach this important milestone.”

Chelsi Dotson shared the vision for the Winter Family Wellness Center as a vibrant hub of community life. The modern facility will offer improved accessibility, flexible programming areas and shared spaces that allow the YMCA and community partners to expand services and respond to Enid’s changing needs.

Through collaboration with RSVP of Enid, the City of Enid, and other public and private organizations, the Winter Family Wellness Center will support wellness programs that promote health and longevity while creating new opportunities for connection. Expanded feeding programs and enhanced partnerships with community agencies will further the YMCA’s mission to strengthen the community.

Brent Price closed the ceremony by recognizing the YMCA’s longstanding legacy in Enid and thanking the donors, volunteers, community leaders and supporters who have made this milestone possible.

The groundbreaking officially marks the beginning of a new chapter for the YMCA and the Enid community—one focused on building healthy spirit, mind and body for all and creating a place that will serve generations to come.

YWCA Enid announced today that Rachel McVay has been selected as the organization’s next Executive Director and will assume the role in early August as the organization enters its next chapter of leadership.

McVay brings extensive nonprofit leadership experience and a strong commitment to community service. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a passion for building strong organizations, supporting children and families, and fostering collaborative partnerships that strengthen communities.

The YWCA Board of Directors selected McVay following a comprehensive search process and expressed confidence in her ability to lead the organization forward while continuing its mission to provide safety, support, advocacy, and hope for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

The only child of Groendyke Transport founder Harold C. Groendyke, John Groendyke is survived by his wife, Virginia, his 4 children, 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Funeral services are pending and will be released in a formal obituary from Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home in the coming days.

He was a man of many passions. An entrepreneur, collector, avid outdoorsman, and a rancher, he had a saying, “There’s no better fertilizer than a farmer’s footprints.”

John Groendyke’s footprints can be seen all over the United States and beyond.

John Groendyke was born on Aug. 17, 1944, to Harold and Pauline Groendyke. An only child, he grew up in Enid during the early years of his father’s company, witnessing and later assisting in its meteoric rise from upstart to one of the largest tank truck carriers in the nation.

At age 13, John Groendyke left Enid for Lexington, Mo., and Wentworth Military Academy, where he attended sixth grade through junior college. As with most things in his life, John Groendyke completed his schooling with distinction. Upon graduation in 1964, he had earned the rank of Cadet Brigade Commander, the highest possible rank at the time, and one that no longer exists today.

He then set his sights on a bachelor’s degree, enrolling at Oklahoma State University and joining the Sigma Nu fraternity, where he met several lifelong and influential friends. He graduated from OSU in 1966 and went on to earn a juris doctorate from the University of Oklahoma in 1969.

John Groendyke served in the Army from 1969 to 1971, beginning as a First Lieutenant and finishing as a Captain. He served in the transportation corps, but because he had a law degree, spent most of his time with the Judge Advocate General’s Corps in the courthouse.

Even while busy with school and the military, John Groendyke always made time to stay involved with his father’s business, playing a key role in Groendyke Transport’s first load to Mexico in 1964 and receiving the title of Vice President in 1966.

Twenty years later, John Groendyke took over as CEO and chairman of the board for Groendyke Transport in the wake of his father’s death at the age of 78, and he took the company to new heights.

John Groendyke served on the board for National Tank Truck Carriers for decades, and as chairman in 2001, serving as a major benefactor for the entire tank truck industry. When he stepped down as CEO in 2019, Groendyke Transport brought in about $240 million in revenue and finished the year with 1,400 employees, 1,000 trucks and 1,600 trailers servicing 49 states, Canada and Mexico.

His commitment and accomplishments at Groendyke Transport, and in the tank truck industry, would be more than enough to keep most people busy for a lifetime, but not John Groendyke. His passions varied, and some of his most beloved pastimes were playing and working in the great outdoors.

The son of homesteaders, John Groendyke’s father, Harold Groendyke, was born in a sod house on 160 acres of land near Beaver, Okla., in 1908. Because of Harold Groendyke’s upbringing, John Groendyke grew up with a healthy respect and love for the land and wildlife, and that 160 acres is still in the family today thanks to him.

John Groendyke owned and operated several ranches over the years, taking great pride in working the land. He also had an unmatched love of bird hunting. He served as chairman and a member of the board of directors for the Grand National Quail Club and Foundation, continuing the massive annual Grand National Quail Hunt in his hometown. John Groendyke’s greatest honor in the outdoor arena started in 1976, when he began his first term as commissioner of District 8 for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. He earned Commissioner of the Year in 1991 and served six terms as District 8 commissioner. His 44 years of service in the position made him the longest-tenured commissioner in the nation’s history.

Considering John Groendyke’s love of the land and lifetime spent in Enid, it’s no surprise he held the town and the state dear to his heart. He kept Groendyke Transport’s headquarters in Enid even as other businesses uprooted to larger metropolitan areas. He also served on several local and state boards, and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to groups, nonprofits, religious organizations, and businesses in Enid and throughout Oklahoma.

His donations tallied in the millions of dollars over his lifetime, including national organizations and generous donations to his alma maters Wentworth Military Academy, OSU and OU, among other educational institutions.

Another big recipient of John Groendyke’s generosity coupled with another of his hobbies – his collecting and restoring of classic automobiles. On several occasions, he raised money for the American Diabetes Association by showing his classic cars at their charity events.

Over the years, John Groendyke put together one of the most coveted collections of classic cars in the country, and became a regular participant and winner at some of the most prestigious car shows in Pebble Beach, Amelia Island, Meadowbrook, and San Marino.

John Groendyke’s lifetime contributions are felt and seen throughout many industries, organizations, and people, and they did not go unnoticed during his lifetime. In 2008, he received induction into the Oklahoma State University Spears School of Business Hall of Fame, an honor followed up in 2015 with induction into the Oklahoma State University Hall of Fame. He joined the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2013 for his many contributions to the state. He is also a member of the Enid Hall of Fame, received a lifetime achievement award from NTTC in 2024, and had his name added to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s headquarters and the bell tower at Wentworth Military Academy.

John Groendyke lived a full life, and he will always be remembered by the many people whose lives he impacted.

The 10 Under 40 Awards ceremony is set for Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at Stride Bank Center, where the top 10 recipients will be honored. These awards recognize well-rounded individuals who contribute meaningfully to Enid’s growth, culture, and progress. Nominations will be accepted through the online form, that will be posted on EYP’s Facebook page and on the awards website at www.growenid.com/eyp-10under40. The nominations will be reviewed by an independent panel of judges comprised of leaders from outside the EYP organization.

He emphasized that recognizing emerging leaders helps reinforce Enid’s commitment to keeping local talent local. Young professionals, he noted, are the driving force behind the community’s progress, bringing fresh ideas, new perspectives, and innovative approaches that shape Enid’s future.

Cook also hopes the event sends a clear message: young leaders are valued. He wants them to feel confident building their careers and roots in Enid, knowing they are an essential part of what makes the community strong and special.
