Here are some safety tips on Facebook & Twitter.

  • Never use your middle name. That info can help someone set up a fake bank account in your name with the right information.

  • Don’t check in at your home or a map will show exactly where you live.

  • Don’t talk about your parents being gone or out of town. Strangers can see the post who are friend of friends.

  • If you go to a party you shouldn’t be at you should leave within 5 minutes because everyone has a smartphone and they’ll be taking pics.

  • Don’t share your relationship status. That is something for friends and family only.

  • Pick an appropriate email address. Something an employer would think is appropriate. Don’t use hotbody11@gmail.com.

  • Don't use something like Slacker4Ever as your username on a social media network. It could come back to haunt you.

  • Don’t share your birthday if at all possible or tell how old you are.

BEER OR KOOL-AID?

Have pics taken with your camera

Wait until the next day after a party or event and pick the best one to upload.

Make sure it is positive and appropriate.

Everything you post will either take you up or take you down.

How many of you have uploaded a photo online?

BEWARE of Geolocation!

Avoid trouble with Photos on Instagram & Facebook

  • Don’t post pics of where you’re at and pics of expensive items you are wearing. You could get robbed.

  • If you post vacation pics, people will know you are gone and how far away you are.

  • If you’ve posted pics of your dog and used his name, a thief could use that info to get into your house.

Snapchat videos can be saved and forwarded

  • Although Snapchat information disappears, you can download videos to your phone before they disappear. And that makes everything is public.

  • Everyone hold your breath for 7 seconds. 7654321

  • It only takes 7 seconds for someone to snap a photo of what you sent and share it. Something you send could ruin your reputation.

  • You may think the disappearing messages can't come back to haunt you, but the company recently settled charges with the Federal Trade Commission for, among other things, not informing users that messages could be saved without their knowledge.

 LESSONS FROM THE BREAKFAST CLUB

  1. Don't judge someone based on first impressions. It prevents us from meeting people that could become our best friends.

  2. Don't put labels on people. The golden rule applies—if you wouldn’t want it done to you, don’t do it to someone else.

  3. Know who you are and to own it! Don’t be afraid of what others think of you.

 CYBERBULLYING

  • Sending mean, vulgar, or threatening messages or images;

  • Posting sensitive, private information about another person;

  • Pretending to be someone else in order to make that person look bad;

  • Intentionally excluding someone from an online group;

  • Don't blame yourself. It is not your fault.

  • Cyberbullies are unhappy, frustrated people who want to have control over your feelings so that you feel as badly as they do.

  • Don't beat yourself up. Don't make a cyberbullying incident worse by dwelling on it.

  • Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself, or stand up for someone else who is being cyber bullied – usually the bullying can be stopped pretty quickly when people speak up.

 REMEMBER

Perception is everything. Things that you think are funny might not be to potential colleges or employers. A photos that you know is innocent might look inappropriate, so be careful.

Ask yourself - Would you print out your Instagram, Twitter or Facebook page for a college application? If not, start to clean it up now. Your resume starts when you open a social media account.
